As a calligraphy and calligraffiti artist who focuses almost exclusively in analog artwork, I’ve spent hours of time dedicated to
recreating analog style work digitally in Procreate using the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. I’ve purchased every blackletter-style
on the market to date and have studied what works and what does not to create my own extensive brush sets.
This set includes a total of 27 Procreate brushes as well as a guide template for creating calligrams. The brushes include:
• 6 unique chiseled brushes at a variety of angles (each one has a solid version and a pressurized textural version).
• 6 unique grunge brushes to create muddled textures.
• 4 unique chiseled brushes for creating calligrams (each one has a solid version and a textural version).
• A square grid brush to help lay out compositions.
Installation
1. Unzip the package and place the files in a cloud drive (like iCloud or Dropbox).
2. In Procreate, open the brush palette and create a new brush set.
3. In the top right of the palette, tap the + button and then tap Import.
4. Import the files into your new set.
NOTE: Depending on how you have your orientation set in Procreate, brushes might import backwards. To correct this:
Usage
These brushes can be used like any other Procreate brush, so feel free to modify them to your heart’s content!
1. Ensure your iPad’s orientation lock is not active, then open Procreate.
2. Tap on the Actions menu (little wrench icon) and select on the image option.
3. Select the Insert a file option and import the Calligram_Template.png included with the brush set files.
4. The template will be imported into Procreate. Create a new layer on top of the guide layer.
5. Each slice of the circular template has a letter assigned to it. When drawing in that slice, use the corresponding
calligram brush labelled with that letter. For example, in slice A, use Calligram A Solid or Calligram A Textured.
6. Once you work your way through slice D, rotate the iPad and start again for the next set of slices, repeating step 5.
Tips
• Use the grunge brushes as erasers as a reductive method to give character to your strokes.
• Add even more texture using Procreate’s built in Spraypaints brush set. The Splatter brush in this set is a great way to
give the strokes a muddled texture.
