The Fourth Industrial Revolution

Introduction
Bionic technology can be defined as the flow of concepts from engineering to biology
and vice versa. The advancement in bionic technology over the years has helped
scientists to create various innovative materials that enhance our ability
(Vyas, 2018). One of the main functions of Bionic or Biological
Technology is to enhance the ability of a normal and unable
person. Vyas say Bionic. devices such as prosthetic arms
and prosthetic legs have even helped people with
disabilities lead a normal life.

Bionic Technology is a device for human development, it is

also used in combat exercises for example the H.U.L.C
exoskeleton which has a titanium body was developed by Berkley
Bionics and Lockheed Martin mainly keeping soldiers in mind. It is a 3rd gen
exoskeleton which allows the wearer to easily lift up to 200 pounds of weight and also
decreases the amount of metabolic energy required by the wearer (Vyas, 2018). Also
according to Vyas, the exoskeleton essentially provides a person with superhuman
capabilities by increasing the strength as well as endurance. Imagine the soldiers
performance during combats, indeed this device will lessen the casualties and enhance
the abilities of a normal soldier. There are numerous bionic devices that are created and
developed like Mind Controlling Helmet, Bionic Lens, Bionic Arms and many more. The
Bionic prosthetic arms that can move like normal human arms and control through
muscle movements are renowned all over the world, many people used bionic
technology to live again and continue life. Because Bionic Technology helps the victim
of accident, illness and in born persons that had unable parts of their bodies like hands,
legs and etc.

In the Philippines we don't have advanced bionic devices, in fact we had prosthetics
arms and legs that cannot move and for display purposes only. Because we're living in
a third world country, an undeveloped land that is occupied and devastated by

Objective
To have a direction the researcher selected the academic papers
objective to make the study answerable and interesting to the readers.
The Objective;
 How does Bionic Technology connect to Science, Technology
and Society.

Scope and Delimitation

The focus of this study is to determine the connection of Bionic
Technology between Science, Technology and Society.
Body of the Study

According to Yoseph Bar-Cohen (), as humans live longer there is a growing need for
availability of organs for transplant however shortage in donations necessitates the
development of artificial alternatives. Advances in medicine have led to the availability
of artificial blood, replacement joints, heart valves, and heart-lung machines that are
common implanted. In the United States, nearly one in ten individuals is using some
type of an implanted medical device [Malchesky, 2001]. Muscle is a critically needed
organ and its availability in an artificial form for medical use can greatly contribute to the
improvement of the quality of life of many humans. Bar-Cohen illustrated that Bionic
Technology will supply the necessities of human beings and the development of their
abilities. Bionic Technology is a fusion of Science and Technology to provide the needs
of society.

According to Bulger, Clement and Oliver (2011), a few hundred years ago a hand
amputee would have been condemned to a hook prosthesis that had limited function
and carried significant social stigma. However in today’s society a hand amputee can
expect a replacement hand that repli-cates a whole host of normal hand functions and
looks remarkably life like. Significant advancements in bionic hand technology have
occurred and this field is now considered to be a triumph of medical engineering
excellence. Bulger, Clement and Oliver illustrated that the advancement of bionic
technology had benefited the human being for alternative living.

According to Shane Conroy (), Shepherd and his team are part of the Australian
government-funded Bionic Vision Australia program, taking their knowledge from more
than 30 years of experience and applying it to a new range of projects — chiefly, the
bionic eye.Just as the cochlear implant stimulates the auditory nerve, the bionic eye
stimulates the optic nerve. A camera is attached to a pair of glasses, which transmits
high-frequency radio signals to a microchip implanted in the retina. These signals
convert into electrical impulses and are passed along the optic nerve to the brain, where
they are interpreted as an image. For the devices to be effective, patients do need to
have an operating optic nerve and some retinal cells in tact. The first human trails are
expected to take place as early as 2013. However, Shepherd is quick to point out that
test patients won’t experience sight as we understand it.“At the moment [all patients will
see are] a number of black-and-white dots, which represent the number of electrodes
we have implanted behind the eye,” Shepherd says. “We are developing a device that
will have approximately 100 electrodes, which we believe will allow people to distinguish
between light and dark, and make out rough shapes.” This information of Shane Conroy
is way back 2013, how can we imagine the improvements of bionic eyes in theses
present days.

Data Analysis
The datas have shown that Bionic Technology is indeed connected to Science,
Technology and Society, it is because the data says Bionic Technology is a device
which is a Technology, and scientists develop this technology through biology which is
considered in the field of Science. Also, Bionic Technology offers abundant supply of
necessities, because Bionic Technology can create a different Artificial Organs to
prolong life which is to the Society. The Advance Bionic Technology makes the fiction
superhuman real, like the soldiers that had been developed by different scientists to
enhance the ability of it in combat situations. It is not just a connection of STS, but the
combination of STS. Bionic Technology is a Combination of Science and Technology to
help the Society.

Conclusion
The research concluded that Bionic Technology is connected to Science, Technology
and Society because of the following reasons;

A. Bionic Technology is a device which is a Technology.

B. Because the Scientists that developed the Bionic Technology used the
information of Science, which is Biology.
C. Because Bionic Technology provides abundant supply of necessities for the
Society for advanced medical purposes.
D. Bionic Technology is the Combination of Science and Technology to help the
Society.
