NUS OVERSEAS POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP

1. Purpose

The NUS Overseas Postdoctoral Fellowship (NUS-OPF) Scheme is part of NUS’


continuing efforts to develop its best talents for a career in academia through exposure
to international postdoctoral training.

2. Scope & Fields of Study

The area of research pursued should be relevant to the Department and Faculty’s
current and future strategic areas of teaching and research.

3. Eligibility

3.1 Applications are invited from outstanding individuals who are interested to
pursue a tenure track academic career and meet the following conditions:

3.1.1 is a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident;

3.1.2 has aptitude and passion for teaching and research, with noted
accomplishments in these two areas;

3.1.3 has been conferred a doctoral degree not more than two years as at 31
December of the year in which nominations are called; and

3.1.4 accepted for postdoctoral training at a leading overseas


academic/research institution (other than the institution from which
applicant’s doctoral degree had been obtained).

3.2 Applicants in the final stages of their doctoral studies and proposing to commence
postdoctoral training immediately upon completion of studies are also welcome
to apply.

3.3 Applicants who meet the above conditions and are in receipt of other sources of
funding for postdoctoral training may also be considered.

4. Value of Fellowship

The NUS-OPF may provide for one or more of the following items of assistance:

4.1 One set of economy-class return airfare for travel between Singapore and place
of training. Successful applicants will have to bear the cost of the airfare(s) for
their accompanying spouse and family.

4.2 Monthly stipend, eligibility and quantum to be decided on a case-by-case basis;

4.3 Conference grant, available by application;

4.4 Medical insurance coverage (only for staff) at institution of study; and

4.5 Sign-on bonus and/or Employer’s CPF top-up, which may be provided in lieu of
salary and/or monthly stipend, with eligibility and quantum to be decided on a
case-by-case basis.

5. Period of Fellowship

5.1 The NUS-OPF is tenable for a minimum period of one year and up to a maximum
of two years. Extension for up to another year may be granted only on an
exceptional basis.

5.2 The postdoctoral training should commence in the academic year after the end
of the nomination process.

6. Conditions of Award

6.1 Successful applicants, including existing staff of NUS and those who are not staff
of NUS at the point of award of the Fellowship, will be appointed to a Senior
Tutorship prior to or from their commencement of their postdoctoral training.

6.2 Successful applicants will also be required to sign an agreement to serve NUS for
a period of three years, upon successfully completing their postdoctoral training
within the stipulated time.

7. Exceptions and Revisions

The University shall be entitled to revise, amend or update this Scheme and to make
and issue additional policies and guidelines from time to time. All such revisions,
amendments and updates shall be deemed to be part of this Scheme.
