The key takeaways are that the RM-20 collection contains sampled instruments from the Yamaha PS-20 electric organ, inspired by its use in Beach House's music. It allows playing the samples via MIDI and effects can bring the sounds to life for creative music making.

The RM-20 collection of instruments is inspired by the Yamaha PS-20 electric organ built in 1981. It contains samples of all ten of the original PS-20's sounds that retain the sound and charm of the original instrument.

Running the samples through effects like chorus, delay and reverb will bring the sounds to life and inspire creative music making. It allows exploring the samples beyond their original lo-fi tones.

Overview
RM-20 is a collection of sampled instruments inspired by the Yamaha
PS-20, an electric organ built in 1981. The sounds of the original
hardware instrument are lo-fi but charming, and it has been heavily
used by the band Beach House, where the lo-fi tones contribute to the
band’s dreampop atmosphere.

These RM-20 patches uses samples of all ten of the original PS-20s
sounds, and the samples retain the sound and charm of the original
instrument whilst allowing modern functionality the original lacks, such
as the ability to play parts via MIDI.

Running the samples through effects like chorus, delay and reverb will
bring the sounds to life and inspire your own dreampop creations.

Ableton Live Installation
Once unzipped, move the entire RM-20 Beach Organ folder
containing all of the formats to your Sample Library. This can be any
folder, and if you don’t have one set up yet, simply create a new folder
called ‘Sample Library’ or ‘Reverb Machine Packs’.

Open Ableton Live and drag the folder ‘RM-20 Project’ into the Places
section of Ableton Live’s browser. It will then show up under Live’s Packs,
and the patches can be quickly loaded from the Instrument Rack folder
under the Instruments category.

After installation, be careful to not delete or move the download folder.

It contains the necessary multi-samples, and if deleted or moved
instruments will become unlinked and require redownloading.

4
FL Studio Installation
To install the sampler patches into FL Studio, move the ‘RM-20’ folder
found inside the download’s FL Studio folder, along with the entire
WAV folder, to the following location:

/USER/Documents/Image Line/Direct Wave/

Open FL Studio and add a Direct Wave instrument (Add → Direct

Wave). You will see the RM-20 folder on the right of the interface,.
Double-click this folder to view, open and play the individual patches.

5
Studio One Installation
To install the sampler patches into Studio One’s SampleOne instrument,
move the ‘RM-20’ folder found inside the download’s Studio One
folder, along with the entire WAV folder, to the following location:

/USER/Documents/Studio One/Presets/Presonus/SampleOne

Open Studio One, right-click the SampleOne instrument in the browser

and choose ‘Refresh’ to see the preset files.

6
Logic Pro X Installation
To install the sampler patches into Logic Pro X’s EXS24 instrument, move
the ‘RM-20’ folder found inside the download’s Logic EXS folder to the
following location:

/USER/Music/Audio Music Apps/Sampler Instruments

You can now open an EXS24 track within Logic and find the presets in
the main EXS24 preset menu. If they don’t appear, try the ‘Refresh
Menu’ function.

Ableton Macro Controls

• Sustain adjusts the length (release) of the sounds. The original

hardware just featured an on/off switch for sustain, whereas here
you can set the exact length you want.
• Darken applies a low pass filter to the sound, filtering out the treble
frequencies.
• Brighten adds a treble boost, which can help to brighten some of
the naturally darker sounds.
• Chorus runs the sound through Live’s Chorus effect. Used in a subtle
way, this can help add some colour to some of the sounds.
• Delay Time controls the length of the delay effect.
• Delay Mix sets the volume of the delay effect’s echoes. At its
minimum setting the effect is off, at its max setting the echoes are the
same volume as the source signal.
• Reverb Time controls the size of the reverb effect. The minimum
setting is quite subtle, and the maximum setting is a huge cathedral-
sized reverb.
• Reverb Mix sets the volume of the reverb trails, with the minimum
being no reverb and the maximum being as loud as the source
signal.

Troubleshooting
I get a ‘Media Files are Missing’ message in Ableton.
This error message occurs if the Ableton patches can’t find the samples
in the download’s WAV folder, usually caused by moving/deleting the
download or the WAV folder inside the download.

The easiest way to fix it is to delete the pack, redownload it, and then
move it to a folder where it won’t get moved (like a Samples folder) and
reinstall via the drag-and-drop method.

I get a ‘Demo’ message in Kontakt.

Make sure you’re using the full version of Kontakt to run the pack. Our
patches do not work in Kontakt Player.

I get a ‘sample not found!’ message in Logic Pro X.

The easiest way to fix this issue is to add the WAV folder from the
download into the ‘Audio Music Apps/Sampler Instruments’ folder
(the same location as the patches).

Issues opening FL Studio / DirectWave patches.

Most DirectWave issues are caused by either using an older version of
FL Studio, or from DirectWave not being able to find the WAV samples
that are part of the patches.

If you’re using a version of FL Studio earlier then FL Studio 20, try

updating to the latest version. Make sure the WAV folder with the
samples has been moved to the DirectWave folder so that the patches
can find the samples.
