1. Product Introduction

Thanks for choosing Walz Axle Weighing System. This system is

based on the WIM (Weigh-In-Motion) technology and NTEP (from

National Conference on Weights and Measures) standard.

WIM (Weigh-In-Motion) is the top technology in weighing field. We

have long been engaged in research, development and production of the

axle load WIM system. We are one of the few firms who have the

intellectual property right of their own. This system is more reliable with

high accuracy and can be used in portable vehicle scales and other axle

load WIM systems.

The National Conference on Weights and Measures from United States

of America issues an NTEP Certificate of Conformance following

successful completion of an evaluation of a device. It indicates that the

device(s) described in the Certificate is/are capable of meeting applicable

requirements of the NIST Handbook 44.

Please read and understand this manual thoroughly before using the

system and in case of any problem, please contact our local distributor for

technical support.

• Sampling speed: 200times/sec
The speed of display renewal: 12.5times/sec

• System non-linearity 0.01%
• Impulse source of sensor: DC 5V±2%
• Operating temperature range: 14°F -140°F
• Power supply sync (without the sensor): 70mA (no printing and no back
lighting), 1000mA (printing)
• Accuracy:
Static System +/- 1% or better with required conditions*.
In-Motion System +/- 3.5% or better with required conditions*.

*Required Conditions:
• Clean concrete or asphalt surface with no slope or crown that is level
stable ground without any wobbling or raising.
• Level approach and exit to and from the scale at least as long as the
length of truck being weighed.
• The two scale pads must be on the same parallel line so one scale edge
should NOT be further forward than the other.
• Tires must drive over the center of the scale pads.
• There must be no turning action within 35 feet when approaching or
exiting the scale pads.
• There must be no accelerating or braking action when vehicle passes
over the scale pads.

Recommended use of Dummy Pads with Static System:

We suggest you use dummy pads for Static weighing IF the individual axles
that make up your tandem axle group (or triple axle group) do NOT move
independently from one another on your truck.
(If the truck axles move independently of one another, then you are fine without
dummy pads).
These dummy pads would be non-weighing pads placed under the tires of an
axle(s) in the tandem (or triple) axle group that are NOT on the scale pads in
order to level out the weighing surface so all the tires of the tandem (or triple)
axle group are on the same plane.
These dummy pads could easily be made by sandwiching a piece of 3/4”
plywood and a piece of 5/8” plywood together.

4. Operation

A. Starting the System

Please turn on the Power Supply Unit first.

Then switch on the system.

Warning: If there is no battery inside, the system can be connected to the AC

power supply by an adopter in the tool box of the indicator. But in this case the
printer will NOT work and if “Print” button is pressed, the system will auto shut
down.

A customer LOGO will be displayed during system starting up and it usually

takes 30~50 seconds for the whole system to be loaded.

After the system is ready, the system will load the main menu.

B. Main Screen Features

1. "Weigh In Motion": In this function, there are two weighing modes: Manual
and Auto.

Manual weighing mode means the operator must first input the axle type of
the truck first. After inputting axle type the truck drives over the scales as
slow as 3 mph but not faster than 5 mph. After the whole truck passes, the
printer will automatically print the weighing ticket.

Auto weighing mode means unattended weighing. The operator does NOT
input anything on indicator. The sensor in the scale will automatically detect
the axles and make mathematical calculations. After the whole truck passes,
please wait 20 seconds for the system to make the calculation and then print a
ticket. During this period, please make sure no more trucks pass over the
scales AND there is nothing on the scales because the system will also set the
Zero Point during this period. If anything is on the scale, it will seriously
damage the accuracy and system calculation.

2. "Static Weighing": Is used to weigh the axles of a truck statically, which

means the truck has to stop each time an axle is on top of the scales. In this
mode, it is used as a normal axle scale and there must be at least 2 operators.
One operator will drive the truck and stop on the scales and the other operator
will press the "Weigh" button on the touch screen to record the weight. Please
press the "Weigh" button only after the system locks in the weight.

7 / 14
3. "Records": This is the records of all weighing data including valid and invalid.
Please note the data is stored in the system as a CVS file. Operator can export
it to a computer and access it through a USB disk. The records can be also be
reviewed, printed and checked.

4. "Settings": This is the core of the system setup. Please NEVER change any
settings unless your local distributor authorizes.

5. "Data Monitor": This is to monitor the data and is only for an engineer to
check the status of the whole system and for calibration if necessary.

6. "Turn Off": This is to switch off the system. Please note that even if the
system is switched off, the power supply unit is still working until an operator
physically turns off this button on the indicator.

1. Weigh In Motion

Previous Scale Current Scale Previous Scale Total Weight Current Scale
A Weight A Weight B Weight of the truck B Weight
Please note:

In Manual weighing mode, the "Axle Type" field is valid since it must be entered.

8 / 14
In Auto weighing mode the "Axle Type" field is invalid.

NOTE: The weighing mode can be set in “Settings” in the main menu.

"Truck" field is for the operator to input the Truck License Plate number. Please enter
the Truck License Plate Number from the small key pad. After it is entered, please press
"Enter" button for the system to record.

"Speed" will be automatically detected by the sensor. If the speed is over 5 mph, the data
could be invalid or have over a 3% difference than actual weight.

"Start" is to start the weighing operation. It will become valid and can be pressed only
when every field has data entered.

"Print" is to print the current weight. Please note the printer will automatically print if in
Settings menu the “Printing Mode” is set to “Auto mode”. Otherwise it will not print
until the “Print” button is pressed. “"Print" button is only valid when data is recorded.

"Zero" is used when all weighing and printing work is complete, if there is any weight
value still on the screen, press this button to set the new Zero point.

"Back" is to return to the Main menu.

Truck License Plate Number from the small key pad. After it is entered, please press the
"Enter" button for the system to record.

"Nos" field is the number of axles which have been weighed and recorded. It is
automatically added by the system.

"Weighing” button must be pressed each time the truck stops an axle on the scales and
the weight is locked.

"Print" button will be valid only when “End” button is pressed and all the information is
recorded.

"End" button should be pressed ONLY when the whole truck passes and all axle weight
is recorded. After “End” is pressed, the "Print" button will be valid and the records will
be saved into the system database. If “End” is pressed before the whole truck passes, the
rear axle weight will not be recorded for present truck being weighed.

"Zero" is used when all weighing and printing work is complete, if there is any weight
value still on the screen, press this button to set the new Zero point.

"Back" is to return to the Main menu.

5. User Tips:

1. The two scale pads must be on the same parallel line. That is to say, one scale edge
should NOT be further forward than the other.

2. The approach and exit lengths to and from the scales should be at least the length of the
truck you are weighing.

3. There must be no turning within 35 feet when approaching or exiting the scale pads.

4. There must be no accelerating or braking when vehicle passes over the scale pads.

5. Make sure the vehicle tires are driven over the approximate center of the scale pads.

6. The scale pads must be placed on a hard, clean, level surface with concrete or asphalt
being ideal.

7. Make sure there are no small stones under the bottom of the scale pads.

8. Make sure the scale pads are placed on even, level stable ground without any wobbling
or raising.

9. The system and the built-in printer only works when axle weight is more than 1,000 lbs
and total weight is more than 2,000 lbs.

10. In-Motion speed must be NO MORE THAN 5pmh. Slower speeds produce better
results.
