Fitting the engine barring gear

Remove the cover from the flywheel housing
Fit the engine barring gear MAN no.

This engine barring gear enables the flywheel to be
blocked in the required position using pin 1 and hole
2 or 3 .

Removing the valve cover

Unscrew and remove the mounting bolts ( )
Remove the valve cover and cylinder head gasket

Firing sequence: 1 – 5 – 3 – 6 – 2 – 4

Set the piston of the cylinder to be adjusted to

ignition TDC. To do this:
Use the engine barring gear to rotate the flywheel
until the load is removed from the valves of the
cylinder to be checked; the flywheel can be
blocked in this position.
The rocker arms of the synchronous cylinder are
then in overlap.

Checking the valve clearance on the intake valve,

nominal dimension:
Intake valve ............................................. 0.50 mm

Insert a feeler gauge 1 between the rocker arm 2

and the valve stem 3 2
You must be able to move the feeler gauge with only
little resistance. Adjust the valve clearance if
necessary. (See the description below.) 1

Exhaust valve/EVB counter-holder......... 0.35 mm 1 2

Loosen the locknut 1 and unscrew the set screw

2 in the counter-holder as far as possible
3
Push the rocker arm 3 downwards – e.g. using a
screwdriver – as often as required (at least 3 to
5 times) until no more oil emerges from the
depressurisation bore 4 (not visible). (All the oil 4
must be forced out of the piston space.)

little resistance. Adjust the valve clearance if
necessary. (See the description below.)

After this:
Insert a 0.35 mm valve feeler gauge between the
rocker arm 3 and the valve stem 5

ADJUSTING THE VALVE CLEARANCE

Adjusting (with the engine cold)
The piston of the cylinder to be set must be at 3
ignition TDC.

and the valve stem 3
Use the valve setting key to unscrew the locknut
on the rocker arm

CHECKING THE VALVE CLEARANCE

Alternative method of checking the valve clearance in D 0836... engines

By using this additional method, it is possible to check and adjust all valves in only 2 crankshaft positions.
The method described here can be used as an alternative to the conventional method described above.

Adjusting
Fit the engine barring gear to the flywheel housing
( ) (see page 1)
Turn the crankshaft to the nearest TDC position so
that either cylinder 1 or cylinder 6 is at ignition TDC
valves can be set in this position.
Then turn the engine through 1 revolution – back to
TDC
The remaining 6 valves can be set.

Cylinder 1 or cylinder 6 must be exactly

on the TDC mark.

When cylinder 6 is at ignition TDC (= cylinder 1 in

overlap), then set the:

exhaust (A) and intake valves (E) 1 1

When cylinder 1 is at ignition TDC (= cylinder 6 in

overlap), then set the:

exhaust (A) and intake valves (E) 2 2

Remove the engine barring gear
Fit the cover onto the flywheel housing
