The document discusses LenoTec, a cross laminated timber panel building material that offers design freedom, sustainability benefits, and high performance. It can be used to construct a variety of building types.

LenoTec offers design freedom without constraints of other construction systems. It allows buildings tailored for their uses and users, with individuality, comfort and high performance. It also provides thermal mass, energy efficiency, and a healthier indoor environment.

LenoTec can be used for structural and non-structural walls, solid partitions, floors, ceilings, roofs, cantilevered floors, and curved load bearing structures. It also enables prefabricated wall and roof cassettes.

LENOTEC

Leno Solid Timber Construction – this term stands for the family of products made from large format, solid boards of
timber products. LenoTec building components are made of cross laminated timber panels in a manufacturing process
developed and patented by Finnforest MERK. Large format homogeneous building components can be produced in
dimensions up to 4,8 m x 20 m with thicknesses between 50 and 300 mm.

The Leno system enables clients to build to better standards than the current regulatory minimum, giving excellent
thermal performance, air-tightness and highly effective acoustic insulation.

• When using self-drilling screws in side surfaces, the minimum permitted edge spacing
can be reduced in line with the general technical approval.
• For screws in LenoTec narrow surfaces, the spacings for pre-drilled and non pre-drilled
nail connections apply. For screws of up to Ø 12 mm, however, the minimum spacing
from the edge can be reduced to 42 mm. Screws of up to Ø 8 mm can be used without
pre-drilled holes.

SHEAR WALLS AND DIAPHRAGMS
Shear walls and diaphragms are building elements necessary for proper lateral design. Diaphragms are
(nearly) horizontal and are usually designed as simple supported beams while a shear wall is a vertical,
tension
cantilevered diaphragm. For calculating the permissible horizontal load on top of a shear wall the follow-
ing applies: FH, adm. = τ adm. x t* x b, where τ adm. is the permissible shear stress (0,9 N/mm2 in this case), ion
compress
t* is the minor of the sum of the thicknesses of horizontal layers and the sum of the thicknesses of
vertical layers, b is the width of the element. Each end of each shear wall segment has to be anchored load

down to the foundation with tension ties to prevent overturning. A base shear connection is also required
to prevent sliding off.

LINTELS AND BEAM TYPE ELEMENTS

In these applications Leno is used in a edgewise bending condition. We recommend to take into account
layers in direction of the resultant stresses only. For lintels this means that only horizontal layers are
allowed to be considered to calculate the stresses. In this cases the material values of softwood due to
support
its grade apply. Above wall cut-outs for windows or doors a partly fixed support can be assumed. load

POINT LOAD ONTO EDGE AREA

This case occurs if a Leno wall acts as support for a steel beam for example. We recommend to take only
vertical layers into account. The net cross section is the sum of the thicknesses of vertical layers of the
bearing area multiplicated by the beam width. The permissible compression stress for the net cross sec-
tion is 8,5 N/mm2 in this case.

DESIGN
WELL THOUGHT-OUT DOWN TO THE SMALLEST DETAIL
FLOORS
Leno floor elements are strong and robust, and can directly accept a screed or dry flooring, and also under-floor
heating. Once in place, they provide a safe and stable working platform to build upon straight away. Leno ground floor
elements offer the possibility of reducing foundations, excavations and associated preliminary works. Between floors,
Leno elements provide enhanced fire resistance, and can be specified with openings for staircases and service ducts
pre-cut in the factory. Extended floor elements can provide cantilevered balconies without cold bridging.

WALLS
Open plan spaces are more easily achieved with Leno than with conventional construction methods, and the inherent
strength of the wall panels means that greater room heights can be achieved with thinner walls.

Leno walls are delivered to site with all door and window openings pre-cut in the factory. They can take any form of
external cladding.

Internally, clay boards, fibre plasterboards, and even heavy cabinets can be fixed direct to Leno walls, anywhere, with-
out the need to locate studs or fix battens. Panels can be specified with an interior grade finish to be left exposed.
Leno walls are usually insulated externally: wood-fibre board, for example, is easy to fix to Leno, and offers the advan-
tages of an all-timber construction.

12
ROOM IN THE ROOF
Leno panels used for the floor and sloping roof elements automatically create rooms in the roof that can be used
straight away or easily adapted later if more space is required or occupants’ requirements change. The roof elements
are completely weather-tight, and their solidity is combined with appropriate insulation to prevent summer overheating,
increasingly a problem in British buildings.

SERVICE CHANNELS
Pre-specified Installation channels can also be cut into the panels in the factory, allowing a rapid first fix and increasing
contractor efficiency.

SOUND REDUCTION
Being solid timber, Leno panels have excellent sound-dampening qualities. Leno floors make it easy to meet the per-
formances within the new Approved Document E. Leno party walls can provide up to 75dB sound reduction, well in
excess of the statutory requirements.

MANUFACTURE AND ASSEMBLY
THE HIGHEST QUALITY
Leno solidtimber panels are manufactured to order and are bespoke to your project. Kiln dried spruce boards are cross
laminated into large format panels. Wall, floor and roof elements can be pre-cut in the factory to any dimension and
shape including openings for doors, windows, stairs etc. LenoTec panels can also be manufactured curved, with a mini-
mum bend radius of 8 m.

Assembly on site is exceptionally fast due to the large panel size: the elements are craned into position and simply
joined together using a range of mechanical fixings. Typically the complete shell of a detached house can be erected,
with roof, in a matter of days, allowing interior fit-out work in dry construction to commence immediately.

Airtight from thicknesses of 85mm upwards, LenoTec elements form a very high quality and durable building envelope
that can be easily clad with other materials such as timber, brick, mineral render, steel or composite panels. The ele-
ments are dimensionally stable, with no settlement over time, and require no movement joints. Solidtimber building
structures offer the highest thermal, acoustic and fire performance to meet and exceed Building Regulation require-
ments.

Eurban designed and installed solidtimber structures are also covered by insurance backed warranties from the UK’s
leading providers.

LenoTec buildings provide exceptionally comfortable living and working environments. Being made of solid timber, they
make a positive contribution to a sustainable environment, and they are completely recyclable.

Production floors for Leno elements LenoTec elements consist layers of spruce boards bonded crosswise. They are
manufactured in sizes of up to 4,8 x 20,0 m – and with thicknesses of max. 30 cm.

FIRE PERFORMANCE
The material has a mathematical charring rate of 0,7 mm/min. Fire-proofing characteristics
The requirements for protection against fire (F 30-B, F 60-B, F 90-B) can be
achieved using the following measures: Charring rate v 0,7 mm/min
• Thermal calculation (DIN 4102, inclusion of residual bearing capacity) Fire resistance F 30-B/F 60-B/
duration F 90-B/F 120-B
Example: A ceiling d = 115 mm with 4,20 m span and full use in the cold
calculation (static calculation, max. deflection l/300) complies with F 30-B
without cladding or additional measures.
• Additional wooden layers applied directly in the manufacturing process that
are not required for structural calculation

When using the following cladding applied directly without substructure

(based on DIN 4102 part 4 tab. 84) no further document evidence of conformity
needs to be carried out for the classification of the entire building component
in the following fire resistance categories.
