Sun Pharma is the fourth largest specialty generic pharmaceutical company in the
world with global revenues of over US$ 4 billion, supported by more than 40
manufacturing facilities, in more than 100 countries across the globe. Since 1983, Sun
has grown to become the largest and most valuable pharmaceutical company in India
(HQ-Mumbai, Maharashtra), by market capitalization. Their multicultural workforce,
encompasses over 30,000 team members of more than 50 nationalities. From 2014 Sun
Pharma has unified its sustainability goals into one cohesive model in accordance with
SEBI’s proposed index and the nine principles of the Government of India’s ‘National
Voluntary Guidelines on Social, Environmental and Economic Responsibilities of
Business’, to focus their efforts towards all our stakeholders, be it patients, community,
planet, shareholders, employees, etc. They also adhere to UN Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), to end poverty, reduce inequalities, and tackle climate
change by 2030.
Although the company incurred loss in the last five financial years, it has spent more
than the prescribed CSR budget in last five financial years. The company has spent
huge amounts like 3.94 Cr (2018-19), 2.70 Cr (2017-18) and 2.41 Cr (2016-17) for
sustainability initiatives. Sun Pharma’s social interventions for 2018-19 covered 12
states across 3211 villages, touching lives of approximately 6.5 million people from
culturally diverse communities especially in rural India, giving primary importance to the
most marginalized sections of society.
The company has undertaken various projects for promoting Healthcare in areas of
Punjab and disaster relief for flood victims of Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. They
have undertaken various activities such as installation of solar lights, installation of
traffic signal lights, construction of community kitchen area in villages of Gujrat and
Maharashtra under their rural development programme. Their initiative in alignment with
the flagship Scheme of Gujarat Government, titled as “Sujalam Sufalam Yojana” which
focuses on water conservation during rainy season and afforestation.
Sun Pharma has been continuing their flagship sustainability initiative programme
like Mobile medical units, sanitation programme, distribution of medicines to
marginalized sections across various Indian villages, disaster relief works, rural
infrastructure development, etc. over the analyzed years of 2016 till date. From the
critical analysis of the selected sustainability reports of the company we can infer that
the company is at a ‘Level 4’ integration of sustainability issues as they have only
partially linked their CSR costs with their financial performance and not explicitly
mentioned their benefits of CSR expenditure.
