_____________________________________Statement of
Purpose
“We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must
believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.”

These words of Madam Marie Curie, the eminent research scientist,

gaining two Nobel prizes in one lifetime have been my guide-light
throughout my academic career. With the same perseverance and
confidence, I am standing at a major milestone of my life. The qualities of
the subject of chemical engineering and my professional ambition to
pursue career in research have motivated me to apply for doctoral studies
in chemical engineering.

I have been brought up in a very well educated family where education

holds utmost importance. Basic laws of science have always fascinated
me and I have always tried to find reasons behind the things happening
around. The quest for education is also reflected in my excellent
academic career throughout since my school life. I stood first in the
Sangli district for the middle school scholarship examination and
seventh in higher middle school scholarship examination. I have also
received various awards of merit in curricular examinations of
Mathematics and Science. I have had a privilege of being second in the
Sangli district in H.S.S.C. examination in which I had secured 99% in the
basic sciences. I was amongst the few privileged (a total of a meager 22
students from throughout the country) to be selected on the basis of All
India Merit into University Institute of Chemical Technology, UICT,
Mumbai, India (formerly known as UDCT), a pioneering institution for
Chemical Engineering in the country.

My academic career flourished when I entered UICT. The competent

faculty here introduced me to the basics of chemical engineering in my
first and second year of chemical engineering. If fundamentals of
chemical engineering are taken as a yardstick, third year of chemical
engineering was a watershed. I was extremely fascinated by the vast
knowledge available in the subjects like Fluid Mechanics, Separation
Processes, Heat Transfer and Chemical Reaction Engineering. In the fifth
semester of the course, I stood 3rd in the class. My grades have always
been in an increasing order. The rigorous yet challenging curriculum at
the hallowed portals of UICT, along with six week industrial training I
underwent at Lubrizol Industries Private Ltd. has enlightened me with
sound theoretical knowledge backed up by an equal emphasis on
experimental studies. During my industrial training, I successfully
completed projects on Design of Condenser for Reduction of Alcohol
Losses in Acid Unit and Analysis of Scrubbing System for
Hydrogen Sulfide. Due to my excellence in studies as well as in extra
and co-curricular activities, UICT recognized me as “The Best Student of
Chemical Engineering for Penultimate Year 2003-04”.

The knowledge obtained during my undergraduate studies though

imperative is just like a drop in the ocean. It is my opinion that graduate
studies would serve as a springboard to accomplish my ultimate goal of
devoting myself for active and meaningful research work. Hence I have
decided to pursue graduate studies leading to Ph.D. in one of my fields of
interest. Though I have no disinclination towards any field, I am
particularly interested in Fluid Mechanics, Nanotechnology and
Interfacial Science.

My interest in Fluid Mechanics has developed during my Momentum

Transfer course in UICT. The excellent application of Navier Stokes’
equations to fluid flow to predict the flow behaviour in a specific geometry
fascinates me. Also the closure problem in turbulent flows and the
solution of the arising differential equations with direct numerical solution
is extremely challenging. I have gained distinction grades in both the
courses of Momentum Transfer in my third year of chemical engineering.

Another field that interests me a lot is Nanotechnology. The interest for

this field was evoked when I read the article of Nobel winning physicist
Richard P. Feynman. I have written a review article on the subject in
leading magazine “Bombay Technologist - Journal of Technological
Association, Vol. 51-52, 2001-03” which was well appreciated by the
distinguished professors in UICT. I am versed with the basic principles of
nanotechnology like positional devices, self assembled monolayer and
molecular positioning at nano scale. I am very keen on exploring this area
in greater detail and wish to make a constructive contribution to this field.
I am confident that with proper guidance and state-of-the-art facilities, I
will be able to fulfill my ambition.

I gained interest in Interfacial Science during the course of Interfacial

Science and Engineering which I took as an elective subject in UICT. The
wide applications of surfactants ranging from molecular level like use of
molecular harpoons to recognize osmotic stress on cell walls to a large
scale such as petroleum recovery fascinated me a lot. I would definitely
like to contribute to research going on this subject.

Though I have mentioned my fields of interest, I desire to choose my area

of specialization on the basis of the strengths of the Chemical Engineering
Department at the City University of New York (CUNY). I assure you that I
also relish working in any other field and can adapt myself to appreciate
potentials of other realms. The undergraduate course at UICT has set me
to take on any challenge that I would have to encounter during my
graduate study.

The excellent research facilities, the dedicated and distinguished faculty

and the intellectually stimulating environment at the CUNY make this
university a natural and logical choice for me. I would like to have an
opportunity to work in an environment conducive for growth as an

individual to enable ingenious thinking and freedom to excel in any field

desired accompanied by first-rate collaboration to guide towards relevant
research.

I would like to see myself having career in research either as a chemical

engineering faculty or working in Research and Development department
of an industry. I like to explore newer things that bring benefit not only
financially, but also socially. The earnest appreciation for alternative
viewpoints and approaches towards a particular problem in hand should
be developed for a successful career in research. I am certain that the
CUNY will provide me the right ambience to fulfill my ambitions. At the
same time I assure you to reciprocate with 100 percent commitment and
contribution in every possible way.

Sincerely,

Ashay Dileep Javadekar
