COMPONENTS OF LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT

The components of logistics management is divided into 3 components. They are given
below,
1. Supportive component
2. Primary component
3. Generic component

SUPPORTIVE COMPONENT:

Procurement:
 It is a process of finding and agreeing to terms and acquiring goods, services or works
from an external source which are vital to an organisation.
 It involves the process of selecting vendors, establishing payment terms, strategic
vetting, selection, the negotiation of contracts and actual purchasing of goods.

Information:
 It deals with the flow of information between humans or machine actors within or
between any no. of organization that in turn form a value creating network.

Forecasting:
 Forecasting is an attempt to determine in advance the most likely outcome of an
uncertain variable.
 Planning and controlling logistics system need predictions for the level of future
economic activities because of the time lag in matching supply to demand.

Storage and warehouse:


 Warehousing is the act of storing goods that will be sold or distributed later.
 Storage refers to the action or method of stocking something where as warehousing
defines the act or process to store the commodities in a storage place specially known
as a warehouse.

Material handling:
 Material handling is the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and
products throughout manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, consumption and
disposal.
 It is an integral part of manufacturing industry.

Protective packaging:
 Protective packaging is used in a wide variety of different industries including
automotive, aerospace, electronics and pharmaceuticals.
 It refers to the use of various packaging material to safeguard and shield a core
product from damages during transportation or storage.
PRIMARY COMPONENT:

Transportation:
 In business, at its most basic level, transportation is simply moving products and
materials from one place to another.
 The progress in technique and management principles improves the moving load,
delivery speed, service quality, operation costs, the usage of facilities and energy
saving.

Inventory management:
 It is the supervision of non capitalised assets (inventory) and stock items.
 Inventory management is a systematic approach to sourcing, storing and selling
inventory both raw material and finished goods.

Network design:
 Logistics network design is concerned with the purpose of number and site of
warehouses and manufacturing plants, allocation of customer demand, distribution of
warehouses to production plants.

Order processing:
 It is the prices of the order and all the actions that take place in between.
 It involves picking goods, packing them, and delivering them to the carrier.
 Order processing operations or facilities are commonly called as distribution centres.

GENERIC COMPONENT:

Customer service:
 Customer service in logistics is the activities, service actions are provided, acting as
added value.
 The aim is to bring more value than the core service that customers need and bring the
most satisfaction to customers.
