ABSTRACT: The DataPAC 1500’s new version 5.0 Operating System: New Efficiencies in Use.
Although the dataPAC 1500 remains Entek's “premiere” data collector with all its advanced analysis
features, a number of features have been added to enable more "ease of use" and "faster / more efficient"
measurements. Ease of Use is a fairly subjective subject but in this article, it refers to how the dataPAC
1500 has been modified to enable operations with fewer button being pressed or to enable diagnostics to be
achieved in a faster or more comprehensive manner. In this paper we will be covering these features rather
then the advanced analysis features of the unit.
EASE OF USE:
Dedicated Analysis Mode: In previous versions, one had to first enter the “route ” mode of operation of
the dataPAC’s before engaging it’s advanced “off-route” features. Extra buttons were thus necessary not
only to find the Off Route mode but also to select which route needed to be considered for storage of data
beforehand. Version 5 introduces a new separate application icon called the “Analysis” icon where the
analysis measurements are available. The measurements available thusly are of Overalls, Spectrums, Time
Waveforms, True Zoom, Phase/Magnitude/Speed and, if the option is purchased, Waterfall and
Bode/Nyquist Plots. These measurements are automatically stored in a separate “analysis” route which
follows the same rules using the Smart Unscheduled Measurements if the Smart Unscheduled Mode is
selected in the Odyssey/Enshare Unload Options dialog box of the software. DEMONSTRATION
Diagnostic Frequencies: Now, the dataPAC 1500 version 5 has added an additional cursor which enables
one to read the machine diagnostic frequency label directly on the front display when looking at spectrums.
In order to accomplish this, one must have preprogrammed the Frequency Set Up portion of
Odyssey/Enshare which are only available in the “Deluxe” version of that software. You must also check
the “Load frequency labels” box in the Load Options dialog box. As one moves the cursor across the
spectrum, if the present cursor position corresponds to a calculated diagnostic frequency, it is indicated in
the top right side of the spectrum display. Also, one can more the cursor directly to each subsequent
diagnostic frequency by pressing the <SHIFT> key while using the left or right arrows to more the cursor.
DEMONSTRATION
6 MBytes Ecard ready: Although the dataPAC will allow loading a 6 MB Ecard, the present dataPAC
Utility program will only allow up to 4 MB of data. Engineering will advise when the new utility allowing
6 MB of data will be available.
Non Vib Measurement set up improved: The new Version 5 on the dataPAC now allows both static (DC
signal types) or dynamic (AC signal types) for non vibration measurements. An example of the later may
be sound level measurements (with or without ISO weighting filters) or dynamic pressure levels. In the
Overall Measurement Parameter set up box of the analysis mode select the Xdc Native Units menu to be
“OTHER”, select the Measurement Variable (STATIC or DYNAMIC) and the appropriate Unit text field.
The installed transducer MUST be of the “Generic Other” type which will allow you to enter the proper
transducer calibration factor.
Enteract Home
This feature along with the external trigger and time waveform set up would allow one to look at the
dynamic pressure curves of each cylinder of a reciprocating compressor. Dynamic pressure curves and
corresponding valve impact time waveform curves form the foundation of reciprocating compressor fault
analysis.
Route navigation improvement: The dataPAC now allows one to “jump” to a specific position in the
route with a drop down selection of any point, location, machine, etc in that route. One does NOT need to
repeatably use the <ADV> or the <DEC> keys. Also the end of route information is more straight forward
and allows for restarting the same route or jumping to a new route quickly. DEMONSTRATION
Automatic Screen Contrast Control : The DataPAC 1500 V5 now allows both manual and automatic
display contrast control. The automatic adjustment is based upon the internal temperature of the instrument.
Enhanced Communications: The Remote Transfer program allows one to connect the dataPAC 1500 V5
to a Hayes compatible modem and load/unload to a remote host computer. Routes, Route data and
balancing runs may be communicated this way. The dataPAC Utility program on the host computer must
be in the “Serve Collector” mode and , if automated collection is desired … then the Scheduler program
may be used as well. Data transfer rates from 19.2K to 115.2K can be achieved.
FFT GUI Improved: This has been achieved through the combination of Diagnostic Frequency indication
with the new Diagnostic Frequency cursor, Single stroke peak selection and delta frequency/amplitude
calculations in the spectrum FFT displays. The latter giving more accurate readings that are interpolated
from acquired readings. DEMONSTRATION
Route based collection improved: Based on the Diagnostic Frequency labeling and the capability to
disable the Autoranging portion of the data collection procedure. Manual ranging is now available as well.
Window Font size: The Memory Card Manager program in the dataPAC 1500 now allows one to select
different font sizes. This feature balances visibility with the amount of data that is displayed on the display
screen.
SPEED OF ACQUISITION:
Faster data Collection: Previous to version 5.0, the dataPAC family only took overall vibration
measurements using analog circuitry measurement techniques. The dataPAC 1500 v5.0 introduces the
option of selecting Root Sum of Squares (RSS) Overall measurements. The RSS depends on the spectrum
measurement and as such may not be as complete as the power in the analog overall. This is because the
RSS depends only on the range of FFT lines of resolution in the spectrum while the analog uses the full
range of the analog input amplifier of the dataPAC. The RSS readings are acquired much faster however
and may be very well sufficient for PdM type readings. DEMONSTRATION
The dataPAC will only use the RSS mode when the filter setting in Odyssey is set to “Use data collector
filter if available” in the new Band Filter dialog box AND a Odyssey filter is made and selected which
is NOT on of the dataPAC 1500’s internal filters. The actual dataPAC 1500 analog filter used during
RSS readings is the filter that is immediately BELOW the constructed Odyssey filter. The standard
dataPAC 1500 internal filters are as follows:
Enhanced Strobe driver: In the OFF Route mode, the strobe operation has been enhanced to allow the
user to select the source of the strobe driver to be either the cursor frequency on the spectrum or the filtered
vibration signal on the input of the dataPAC.
Improved gSE constants: In previous releases, the 30 msec time constant was always used for Off Route
gSE spectrum measurements. Now the gSE time constant is varied depending on the FMAX selected. This
is the same way that Odyssey selects the time constant when creating the On Route gSE spectrum
measurements and means that Off Route and On Route gSE spectrums measurements should correlate
better.
Single Keystroke Peak cursor: A new “Peak” cursor type has been added which, when selected, allows
one to jump from peak to peak by merely pushing the left or right arrows keys. DEMONSTRATION
Automatic programmed operation: You can set up your dataPAC 1500 to turn itself on and collect data
at scheduled intervals. This type of data collection is useful for collecting data without having a person
there to press the <STORE> key. At the scheduled time, the data collector will turn itself on, run through
the programmed mode and collect data. When all the data has been collected, the dataPAC turns itself off
until it is time to collect data again. The turn on and turn off events are equal to what is called a “data
collection cycle”
One can set the start date and time, the number of times you want it to collect data and the amount of time
between collection cycles through the Programmed Data Collection set up in the Set Up Utility icon.
DEMONSTRATION
Modem connectivity: The Remote Transfer program allows one to connect the dataPAC 1500 V5 to a
Hayes compatible modem and load/unload to a remote host computer. Routes, Route data and balancing
runs may be communicated this way. The dataPAC Utility program on the host computer must be in the
“Serve Collector” mode and , if automated collection is desired … then the Scheduler program may be used
as well. Data transfer rates from 19.2K to 115.2K can be achieved.
Internal triggering on Input signal: The Off Route mode is enhanced to allow the user to collect a
triggered time wave form and associated spectrum, using the internal vibration signal as the trigger source
rather then an external trigger on the separate trigger input connector.
To use this feature, select one of the “Int” trigger control options from the Spectrum/Waveform
Measurement parameters page in the Off Route mode. Once you press <STORE> and after ranging, the
“Set Trigger Level” dialog is displayed. Set the trigger level and press “OK”. The “Waiting for Trigger”
dialog will then be displayed and the data will be automatically collected once the input signal crosses the
selected trigger level. DEMONSTRATION
This trigger feature will allow one to do a “poor man’s bump test” on the dataPAC without the use of the
more accurate FRF option. This structural resonance bump test however should only be used for
approximate resonance frequency calculation.
