Birds of The Salton Basin Checklist: Open Water - Salton Sea or Flooded Ag Lands Regulatory Status

You are on page 1of 13

Four hundred and seventeen species of birds have been documented as having occurred in the Salton Basin.

Of those, 174 of these have either been

extirpated from the region or occur so infrequently that observing them in any given year is unexpected. Another 247 species (or subspecies) occur often enough,
or in large enough numbers, that observing them is possible to highly probable. Forty-two species have some special status, designated either by California, the
federal government, or non-governmental organizations such as National Audubon Society. For several species such as the eared grebe or American white
pelican, the Salton Sea provides wintering habitat for a large percentage of the species’ total global population. For one, the State and Federally listed
endangered Yuma clapper rail, the entire global population occurs at the Salton Sea and the Lower Colorado River Delta.

The checklist below has been grouped according to the habitat type most often used by each species. As noted in the habitats column, most of the
species other than open water obligates, use more than one habitat. For example, the black skimmer will loaf and nest on open mudflats, but needs adjacent
shallow water for foraging and soaking its breast feathers in order to cool its eggs. Several species that would typically be found in natural woodland type habitats
are found in the Salton Basin in suburban or urban settings where trees have been planted in parks, cemeteries or gardens.
