General Strategies
• Be Familiar with the directions

the easiest (1-5), medium (6-10), the most difficult (11-
15)  later, after 16-40
• Continue with questions 16 through 40:

(36-40)
• If you have time, return to questions 11 through 15

• Never leave any questions blank on your answer sheet
Strategies for Structure Questions
• First, study the sentence what is needed
• Then, study each answer based on HOW WELL
it completes the sentence
• Do not try to eliminate incorrect answers by
looking ONLY at the answers (incorrect only if
they are used to complete the sentence)
• Always fill in the answer sheet
• Time management is very important
Structure in English Pattern
• Contextual language (who, whom, what,
when, how, etc)
• Pattern:
SPOK  Bahasa

• If a word is an OBJECT OF PREPOSITION, it is
NOT THE SUBJECT

TOEFL Exercises
A spacecraft is freed from
fiction___ launched into space.
A.it
B.it is
C.after is
D.after it is
A spacecraft is freed from fiction___
launched into space.
• You see that the first clause is complete (a
spacecraft is freed from fiction). Before the
second clause we need to put a
CONJUNCTION and the SUBJECT of the second
clause.
• So,…the correct answer is D. after it is
after (the conjunction) it (the subject) is (the
verb to complete launched-> passive)
TOEFL Exercises
• ___ with their
surroundings, or they
hide in crevices for
protection.
A. Lobsters
B. Lobsters blend
C. Lobsters blending
D.Because lobsters blend
___ with their surroundings, or they
hide in crevices for protection.
• You see that the 1st clause is NOT complete
and we have a conjunction (or) then the 2nd
clause is complete. So what is needed in the
1st clause? The 1st clause needs a SUBJECT and
a VERB. The correct answer is B. Lobsters
blend to complete the 2nd clause.
TOEFL Exercises
• ____ a ball-and-socket
joint, the elbow is a
simple hinge joint.
A.While the shoulder
B.While the shoulder is
C.The shoulder is
D.The shoulder
____ a ball-and-socket joint, the elbow
is a simple hinge joint.
• You see that the 1st clause is NOT complete
and we have NO conjunction in the sentence.
However, the 2nd clause is complete. So what
is needed in the 1st clause? The 1st clause
needs a CONJUNCTION, a SUBJECT and a
VERB. The correct answer is B. While the
shoulder is to complete the 1st clause. While
is a conjunction, the shoulder is a subject and
is as a verb.
