1.State the theorem of total probability.
2.If P(A) = 1/3, P(B ) = ¾ and P(AUB) = 11/12 find P(A/B) and
P(B/A).
November 18
1. State Baye’s theorem.
2. If A and B are two events such that p (A) = 0.4, p (B) = 0.7,
P (A U B) = 0.3, then find P (A∩B).

1. Two balls are drawn from a bag containing 3 red and 5
green balls. What is the chance that they are (a) of different
colors (b) same color?

1. If P (A) = 0.4, P (B) = 0.7 and P (A B) = 0.3, find P( A B
).

1. (a) A box contains 6 red, 4 white and 5 black balls. A
person draws 4 balls from the box at random. Find the
probability that among the balls drawn there is at least
one ball of each colour. (6)
(b) In a bolt factory, machines A, B and C produce 25, 35
and 40% of the total output, respectively. Of their
outputs, 5, 4 and 2%, respectively, are defective bolts. If
a bolt is chosen at random from the combined output,
what is the probability that it is defective? If a bolt
chosen at random is found to be defective, what is the
probability that it was produced by B or C? (10)

distribution.
x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
p(x) 0 k 2k 2k 3k k2 2k2 7k2 + k
Find (a) the value of k, (b)
and (c) the smallest

1. A continuous random variable X has a p.d.f. f(x) = 3x
, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 Find’ a’ and’ b’ such that (a) P (X ≤ a) = P (X
> a) and (b) P(X > b) = 0.05.

1. For a certain binary, communication channel, the
probability that a transmitted ‘0’ is received as a ‘0’ is
0.95 and the probability that a transmitted ‘1’ is
received as ‘1’ is 0.90. If the probability that a ‘0’ is
transmitted is 0.4. find the probability that (1) a ‘1’ is
received and (2) a ‘1’ was transmitted given that a ‘1’
was received.

1. An urn contains 10 white and 3 black balls .Another urn
contains 3 white and 5 black balls. Two balls are drawn
at random from the first urn and placed in the second
urn and then one ball is taken at random from the latter.
What is the probability that it is a white ball?
