1. Introduction. 2
2. Design Data 3
4. Details of Pier 16
This design note presents the design of free pier and open foundation supporting straight spans.
Super structure is continuous PSC 'Box' girders with structural continuity . The pier supports the
typical 50+50 m span carrying four lane carriage way. The total deck width is 14.75m. Superstructure
is supported on POT-PTFE bearings. The design is carried out by limit state method as per below
mentioned codes.
Braking forces and longitudinal seismic forces are distributed to fixed and free piers as per
expresssion given in IRC:6-2014 and Concrete bridge practice by V K Raina (pg. 84) considering
resistance of elastomeric bearings.
For Live load reactions on pier, class A and 70R vehicles are applied as moving load in STAAD
model. These reactions are distributed on the individual bearings according to their maximum
eccentricities to consider worst effect on the design.
Foundatiom is placed such that the maximum pressure at corners does not exceed its vertical load
carrying capacity.
All members are designed for ultimate and serviceability limit states as per IRC:112-2011.
This design note is applicable for following pier locations RD1P3 of Road 1. Typical

Longitudinal forces arising out of braking longitudinal seismic/wind force on superstructure are
considered in the following section. Total braking/seismic/wind force acting over the continuous unit is
considered for the distribution of the forces on fixed and free piers. Free pier is to be designed for the
maximum horizontal force arising out of shear rating of the bearings.

For transverse seismic case 'D' will be changing as 20% of LL is to be considered. Hence the time
period and corresponding AhT is calculated as follow. The force is assumed to be acting at FRL.
The direction of transverse seismic force is reversible. But for convinience of design the direction is
considered in combination with SIDL + LL considering their transverse eccentricity. So the direction of
the transverse seismic force is calculated depending upon the eccentricity of the LL considered as
calculated in the earlier table. For positive eccentricity transverse seismic force is taken positive and
vice versa.
Longitudinal forces.
During transverse seismic case longitudinal forces will be same as that longitudinal seismic forces.
For vertical seismic case 'D' will be changing as 20% of LL is to be considered. Hence the time
period and corresponding AhT is calculated as follow. The force is assumed to be acting at FRL.

Vertical forces.
Vertical forces due to horizontal effect of LL are taken considering the up and down reactions. It is
obvious that the down reaction will not be critical as compared to upward reaction. Hence only
upward reactions are considered on one side.
UP / DOWN force due to braking = Maximum braking force (27.77t.) on one span x (Depth of

Above seismic combinations are done for longitudial and transverse seismic case saparately. Loads are then
combined as per rule specified for combinations of longitudinal and transverse seismic forces.
Serviceability limit state combinations of loading is done for following loading conditions
Rare combination of loads shall be used for checking the stress limit.
The quasi-permanent combination of loads shall be used for checking crack width in RCC Structures , the
settlement, shrinkage creep effects and to estimate permanent stresses in structures.

The Servicibilty check is carried out for RCC Foundation. The Foundation is checked for stress
level and crack width for Servicibility. The stress limit Iis checked for Rare combination and the
crack width if checked for quasi-permanent load combinations. The check is carried out as per
Section 12 of IRC:112-2011
The crack width betwein the reinforcement bars is calculated as given below,
wk = Sr,max ( e sm - e cm )
where.
Sr,max = max crack width spacing
= 3.4c +0.17 f
r r eff
For moderate condition, the limiting crack width is 0.3 mm as per Table 12.1, IRC:112-2011
The actual stresses in concrete and steel are to be calculated. The linear strain variation of steel
and concrete and is given by,
e s = ( d - dc )
ec dc
The compressive and tensile forces are to be equal given by,
As Es es = 0.5 b dc ec Ec
s c = M x Ec and s sc = M
zc x Es zs

The servicibility moments for Rare combination & Quasi-permanent combination is calculated as below,
