Estimation:

1. An industrial designer wants to determine the average amount of time it takes an adult
to assemble an “easy to assemble” toy. A sample of 16 times yielded an average time
of 19.92 minutes, with a standard deviation of 5.73 minutes. Assuming normality of
assembly times, provide a 95% confidence interval for the mean assembly time.

2. The article “Gas Cooking, Kitchen Ventilation, and Exposure to Combustion

Products” (Indoor Air, 2006: 65–73) reported that for a sample of 50 kitchens with
gas cooking appliances monitored during a one-week period, the mean CO2 level
(ppm) was 654.16. It was examined and confirmed that the data of CO2 level in the
kitchen were following approximately the normal distribution having standard
deviation 164.43. Calculate and interpret a 90% interval estimate for true average
CO2 level in the population of all homes from which the sample was selected.

3. A manufacturer produces piston rings for an automobile engine. It is known that the
ring diameter follows a normal distribution with a standard deviation of 0.001 mm. A
random sample of 10 rings produces a mean of 74.036 mm. Construct and interpret a
95% confidence interval for the true mean piston ring diameter.

4. Suppose we wish to estimate the average yield of a chemical manufactured in a

chemical plant. The daily yield is known to vary with a standard deviation of 21 tons.
The yield, recorded for 50 days, produced a mean of 871 tons. Find a 90% confidence
interval for the mean daily yield of chemical produced.

5. A company manufactures batteries for watches. A random sample of 144 batteries is

taken and the sample mean life is 5.5 years with a standard deviation of 0.6 years.
Construct a 99% confidence interval for mean life of batteries.

6. A quality control engineer is interested in the mean length of sheet insulation being
cut automatically by machine. The desired length of the insulation is 12 feet. It is
known that the standard deviation in the cutting length is 0.15 feet. A sample of 70
cut sheets yields a mean length of 12.14 feet. This sample will be used to obtain a
99% confidence interval for the mean length cut by machine

7. A medical researcher treats 145 subjects with high cholesterol with a new drug. The
average decrease in cholesterol level is x̄ = 80 after two months of taking the drug.
Assume that the decrease in cholesterol after two months of taking the drug follows a
normal distribution, with unknown mean µ and standard deviation σ = 20. Find a 95%
confidence interval for µ. Then find a 99% confidence interval for µ.
8. The Roman Arches is an Italian restaurant. The manager wants to estimate the
average amount a customer spends for lunch, Monday through Friday. A random
sample of 115 customers' lunch tabs gives a mean of $12.75 with a standard deviation
of $3.37. What is the 99% confidence interval for the mean of the lunch tabs for all
customers?
9. You measure the lifetime of a random sample of 25 tires of a certain brand. The
sample mean is x̄ = 50 months. Suppose that the lifetimes for tires of this brand
follow a normal distribution, with unknown mean µ and standard deviation of 5
months. Find a 95% confidence interval for µ.

10. The average daily production potential from the wells in units of 1000 barrels is:
1, 3, 5, 7
Draw all possible samples of size 2 without replacement and prove that:

A. μ=x
B. var( x ) = ×
