Body Shaming

“Ew she’s too skinny”


“Ew he’s too fat”
“You would be a knockout if you lost weight”
“Are you really going to eat all of that”
“There is no way that it is going to fit you”

Body shaming has become a social norm all over the world including the Philippines.
Now, what is body shaming? Body shaming is the act of criticizing your own body, of
another person’s body in front of them or behind their back. Whether we know it or
not, Body shaming kills the same way cancer does. And most of the time, people do
not realize that it could strongly affect the well being of an individual. In a lot of
cases, it leads to problems like eating disorders or suicide. Body shaming goes beyond
the basic forms like fat shaming or skinny shaming. People could also be shame for
their heights or be criticized that they aren’t beautiful for the physique they have. But
no matter the forms, body shaming is unacceptable. On behalf of the victims of bod y
shaming, I want you to know if you haven’t already that it is not okay to joke around
about the person’s body. It doesn’t matter if the statements are intentional or not. A
person’s body figure, should never be a conversation starter. You should never start a
conversation to a friend of whom you haven’t met for a long time. By saying “Hey,
long time no see! WOW! You put on some weight” or “God you’re still as skinny as a
stick. I can see your bones, you need to eat a lot more”. These simple words that
actually have the power to kill.

Most of us are potential victims of “body shaming”. The widespread phenomenon of


receiving cruel feedback when our bodies don’t meet the unrealistic beauty standards
of our time. We spend our time lost in self-critical thoughts, despising our body and
comparing ourselves unfavorably to others. Body shaming is based on the belief that
slimmer is better, fat is bad. This belief fuels the multi-billion dollar weight loss,
beauty, and cosmetic surgery industries.  The best way to market something is to
convince people they have a problem, then sell them the answer. Sadly, we have all
become a body haters now. We use Instagram filters or any kind of filters to make our
photos look better. We take dozens of selfies to find the best one and starts dieting.
We also want to lose a few kilos for summer. We buy trashy magazines that belittle
celebrities on the cover, then sell us their “dramatic weight loss secrets” on page two.

Body shaming sells us the lie that by shaming ourselves, we will feel motivated to
take action, lose weight, gain weight and be better. What happens in reality is the
exact opposite; the feelings of shame drive us to give up in stuff it moment of
hopelessness. We should not be body shaming. Instead we should be motivating,
encouraging, and supporting each other. Body shaming is an issue that will not be
solved unless everyone learns how to accept their own body, and until magazine stop
perpetuating this myth of a perfect body.
