    ER Sue a ACTIVITIES _ Science Factsheet: A Star is Born! Kimost like people, stars are born, they grow old, and they die. Stars are born inside massive, dense clouds of gas and dust in Outer Space called nebulae. Williamina discovered the Horsehead Nebula within the constellation Orion. Nebula clouds start to shrink under their own gravity. They get smaller and smaller, and begin to break into clumps. These clumps become hotter and denser until eventually nuclear reactions begin. At 10 million degrees Celsius, the clump becomes a new star. With infrared technology, scientists can view stars forming inside nebulae. Can you put these six steps into order? The clumps become hotter and denser. Anew star is born. As the cloud becomes smaller, it begins to break into clumps. A nuclear reaction begins. | Anebula cloud begins to shrink under its own gravity. The clump reaches 10 million degrees Celsius. Did you know? Nebulae is the plural of nebula. Creative Writing Task Williamnina discovered stars, nebulae and other'sky objects’ in Outer Space. Many films, books and television programmes are set in Outer Space. Writers imagine different lifeforms on far-away planets, and superpowered space vehicles to travel among the stars. Choose from these three creative writing prompts to create your own exciting, funny, imaginative story set in Outer Space. 1. Imagine you had a spaceship that could take you to the Horsehead Nebula in Orion in the blink of an eye. What adventure would you have there? Think about the forces at work inside a nebula as the nebula shrinks, clumps of dust and gas grow hotter and hotter and new stars are born. 2. Ifyou could have a pet from another planet, what would you do together? Think about what your pet would look, sound and feel like. 3. Write a funny story about a spaceship that is run by space monkeys, Think about the skills the monkeys might have and the skills they might not have. Paint a nebula with nail polish! Ask an adult for help and permission for this task. You need: nail polish in different colours including glitter polish. an old plastic tub, for example from a take-away. This will not be safe for food use when you have finished. a cocktail stick, wooden skewer or other stirrer. a piece of paper or card. 1. Cover a table with newspaper or other covering to keep it safe. 2. Fill your container with water until itis half full. 3. Drip different coloured nail polish onto the Place it on the covered table. surface of the water, including glitter polish. 4, Stir with a stick to create a nebula effect. 6. Lay the paper flat to dry. 5. Gently lay your paper on top of the polish so that the nebula transfers onto the paper.
