history mirrors the development of science and
technology.
• Humans, as both the bearer and beneficiary of
science and technology, flourishes and finds
meaning in the world that he/she builds.

technology, people must examine not only for their
function and instrumentality but also for their
greater impact on humanity as a whole.

The Essence of Technology

Technology as a means Technology is a human

to an end. activity.
Tool to produce Tools used by humans
something, getting to produce something
things done and get things done

Not the real essence of technology

Technology as a Way of Revealing
• According to Heidegger, the truth can be pursued if
we do the correct. In other words, the experience
and understanding of what is correct lead us to
what is true.
• He urged people to envision technology as a mode
of revealing as it shows so much more about the
human person and the world.
Heidegger brought the Greek concepts of:

Poiesis Alethiea

Bringing forth Truth

The essence of technology is

a way of revealing the truth.
Technology as Poiesis

new things, to reveal the truth about their
surroundings.

foods and crops
Challenge Forth…
• Technology is challenges nature by extracting
something from it and transforming, storing and
disturbing it.
• Makes people think how to do things faster, more
effectively and with less effort.
• People exploit the nature and all natural resources
in the name of knowing and addressing the needs
of the society
Enframing

better understand and
Thinking control it

Allowing nature to reveal

Meditative itself without the use of
Thinking force or violence
Enframing…
• Happens because of how humans desire for
security
• Modern technology challenges humans to enframe
nature
Human Persons
Swallowed by
Technology
Swallowed by Technology…
• Humans lose the essence of who they are when
they get swallowed by technology.
• With the excessive use of technology
• Lose the authentic personal interactions
• Lose certain human characteristics
• Shift of the biological clock
“It is boastful for humans
to think that nature needs
to be saved, whereas
Mother Nature would
remain even if humans
cease to exist.”
Paulo Coelho
Art as a Way Out of Enframing
• The poetry in nature is no longer appreciated when
nature is enframed.
• Art leads as from calculative thinking to meditative
thinking.
Questioning as the Piety of
Thought
• Piety means obedience and submission
• As humans, we should submit ourselves to
questioning to our thoughts and reflections
• By thinking and questioning, we reveal more of
ourselves and understand what and who we are as
creatures
Humans need to
take a step back and
reassess who they
were, who they are
and who they are
becoming in the
midst of technology
in this day and age.
Jason Hickel
• Anthropologist at the

Economics
Forget ‘developing’ poor countries
It’s time to ‘de-develop’ rich countries
• Global economy has increased 380%
• Global poverty grew to more than 1.1 billion people
• Economists say we need more growth, but we’ve
already grown so much
• De-develop the rich countries
• Move away from consumption
• Promote healthier and simpler life
• Poor countries are happier than rich ones
• Poor countries have better quality of life
