History of Sindhi


 The history of sindhi language can be traced to an old Aryan dialect, or
primary prakrit, that was spoken in the region of Sindh at the time of
compilation of the Vedas.
 Glimpses of the language can be seen to some extent in the literary
language of the Hymns.
 It was spoken by Arabs and Persian travellers.
 It was not widely spoken but written in three different scripts
1. Ardhangari
2. Saindhu
3. Malwari
 Bruni has described many Sindhi words leading to the conclusion that
the Sindhi language was widely spoken and rich in vocabulary in his
time.
 Over the course of centuries Sindhi culture absorbed Arabic and
Persian words.
History of Sindhi

 Sindhi became a popular literacy language between the 14th and
18th century and was promoted by Shah Abdul Latif, Sachal
Sarmast, M. Zaman, as well as others.
 The first Sindhi translation was done by Akhund Azaz Allah
Muttalwi.
Background of Sindhi

 Sindhi is an ancient language, over 70 percent of the Sindhi words
are sanskrit.
 Sindhi is mostly written in Arabic script, which give some people
the impression that it is a persio Arabic term.
 Sindhi is a very sweet and mellodious language .
 Sindhi is a very rich language with a vast vocabulary which makes it
a favourite of many writters and poets such as Sachal Sarmast.
 It is the language of Saints and Rishis of ancient Sindhi art, music,
literature, culture and the way of life.
Origin of Sindhi

 There are many different opinions on the origin of Sindhi
Language. These include :
1. That Sindhi is derived from sanskrit but others believe that it is
the other way round.
2. It is derived from primary prakrit
3. Sindhi is an Indo Aryan language, having its origin in a pre-sanskrit
Indo Aryan Indus-Valley language.
4. Sindhi is one of the dravidian language, and has its root in the
civilization of Mohen-jo-Daro.
Government Roles

Most sindhi speakers are concentrated in Pakistan in the Sindh
province, and in India in the kutch region of the state of Maharashtra.
The remaining speakers in India are composed of the Hindu Sindhis.
Sindhi is one of the scheduled languages officially recognized by the
federal government. It has influences from Balochi spoken in the
adjacent province of Balochistan. Sindhi final (seven grade education
system) was made a prequisite for employment in revenue, police and
