Chapter 1 summary: The Paulownia Court

The story begins with a woman. The emperor takes a special interest in one of his lovely ladies.
The woman in question is known as Kiritsubo. The emperors other concubines are extremely
upset by this affair because of Kiritsubo’s low rank; she has no backing in court as her father had
died some time earlier. The emperor’s top lady, Kokiden, is of the Fujiwara lineage, a family that
always marries daughters to the emperors. So technically, she has the highest ranking and she
‘deserves’ the emperor’s attention.

But Fujiwara is so damn beautiful, that the emperor would go to her instead of waiting for her to
come to him. Eventually, a child is born (GENJI!). The baby is astoundingly beautiful (“a jewel
beyond compare”). The emperor favors this child. This enrages the concubines. They are cruel to
her, and Kiritsubo falls very ill due to the bad vibes. The she up and dies. The other court ladies
are super psyched about this, but the emperor mourns for an absurd amount of time.

The emperor decides that he must have a part of his lost love and demands that the child lives at
court with him. The emperor continues to grieve, however, for like 3 more years.

An embassy comes from Korea and they get to meet Genji. They are floored by his beauty (at
seven years old). They informed the emperor that he should rule the country one day because he
is so beautiful. Okay.

After years of grieving the loss of his favorite concubine, the emperor meets a lady who looks
exactly like his lost love. Her name is Fujitsubo (which means fourth princess). Genji finds her
beautiful too, as he is intrigued by the idea that she looks like the mother he can’t remember. “He
wanted to be near her always….”. That means exactly as it sounds.

So, Genji turns 12 and has a large ceremony that involves him getting 'the cap of an adult’, his
hair cut, and a wife. He marries the daughter of the Minister of the Right, named Aoi. However,
Genji is bitter with this arrangement, as he really only wants to be with his step mother…..

And this is the perfect introduction to the main character!
