“The Magic Pill”

A Reaction Paper

The Magic Pill is a documentary about changing diets into ketogenic diet as to
combat different illnesses, such as cancer, diabetes, etc. It provided its viewers a new
perspective on nutrition, debunking the different principles taught to us, ever since day
one. In the duration of the film, I was shocked so many times as they reveal facts upon
facts from history of nutritional knowledge up to present. These information matter a
lot to how people live their lives and how they take care of themselves. Having
disseminated information that are harmful to people’s health is dangerous that is long-
term and hard to be changed, because it has already been implanted to the minds of
people all over the world.

The documentary has pointed out how processed foods and carbohydrates are
bad for our health, regardless of how they claim otherwise. They claim that healthy
means the foods that we eat are closest to its natural state, and that we must not
perceive fats as bad for health rather a fuel for life. The Magic Pill talks about how a
low carb high fat diet significantly improved the lives of people suffering from a variety
of illnesses. The documentary used powerful testimonials of people of different ages,
situations, and illnesses, claiming how keto diet promotes weight loss, improves
neurological diseases and reverses chronic diseases.

What shocked me most is how they showed a widely different food pyramid,
utterly far from what I have learned ever since I was a little child. It made me rethink
all the information that has been implanted in me, and those that are true to most
people. It is incredibly dangerous that what is known all over the world is an information
that is not truly proven and is currently being debunked by present professionals. Thus,
this issue must be addressed for the benefit of people of today and future generations.

As I searched further online, I learned that it has become a huge controversy in

the diet and nutrition community. Many professionals have also debunked the different
claims presented in the documentary, indicating how confusing and misinforming the
documentary is to its audience. However, I think, although the documentary had
mishaps and confusing concepts, they are only promoting this keto diet that is
evidently effective to a number of people. They have actually provided a disclaimer
before the documentary starts, saying how the information and advice to be given may
not be for all people, and it is still important to consult to one’s doctor as we all have
different conditions.

To quote the registered dietician who commented on the film, namely Abbey
Sharp, “The Magic Pill did get some things right when it comes to the ketogenic diet,
but there’s a whole lot of information and research that was conveniently omitted to
support their case. We’ve seen a ton of research in the study of a keto diet, but we still
need a lot more stronger studies to say with confidence that the keto diet really is the
“magic pill”. I do think that the keto diet has its merits, especially in clinical settings,
but it’s not without its risks and it may not be right for you. Not to sound like a broken
record, but a healthy diet is one you can maintain in the long run and it’s up to you to
find what works for YOU and not just that what works for the people in this film.”
