Media and Information Literacy

The Moscow Declaration on Media and Information Literacy (2012) defined


Media and Information Literacy (MIL) as “combination of knowledge, attitudes, skills, and
practices required to access, analyse, evaluate, use, produce, and communicate
information and knowledge in creative, legal and ethical ways that respect human rights”.
Furthermore the Council of Europe stated that MIL brings together the three distinct
dimensions of Information Literacy, Media Literacy, and ICT or Digital Literacy. So, it is
very important to understand the concepts of Media Literacy, Information Literacy, and
Technology Literacy.
According to National Association for Media Literacy Education, Media literacy is
the capability of an individual to access, analyse, evaluate, create, and act using all forms
of communication is interdisciplinary by nature. It focuses on assessing information from
different types of media and at the same time understanding the messages it is sending.
On the other hand, Skyline College defined information literacy as the is ability to find,
evaluate, organize, use, and communicate information in all its various formats, most
notably in situations requiring decision making, problem solving, or the acquisition of
knowledge. In the concept of Information Literacy, an individual’s skill thinking skill,
effective researching skills and evaluation skill in order to evaluate the credibility and
validity of information he or she can fine. Lastly, Technology Literacy is the ability of an
individual to use technology to access, evaluate, organize and communicate credible
information. This can help people to communicate better and solve problem faster.
Media Literacy, Information Literacy and Technology Literacy are interrelated
concepts that helps to create a more effective communication of credible information. In
general, they are similar in terms of their goals. The main goal of these concepts is to
provide useful and credible information that will be shared from one person to another.
Moreover, it aims to contribute in knowledge societies through new knowledge. Also, the
three concepts wants to help people in terms of media messages creation, evaluation
and analysis. It mainly emphasizes on the mastery and understanding of facts and details
of a certain subject.
Despite having similar goals, all of them are still different from each other. Media
Literacy focuses on media content. It uses communication and, at the same time, it
focuses on creating a medium for communication in order to spread different information.
While information literacy focuses on gathering, assessing and evaluating of information.
It mainly focuses on verifying a certain information to make sure that is credible. Finally,
technology literacy is all about the digital environment. The ability to use it to be part of
the digital media and to access, organize and share information. Moreover, the
application of new knowledge and advancement is emphasized in this concept.
