Prayer service for lent

Reader: Good afternoon and welcome to this prayer service in

preparation for Lent. Today we say “goodbye” to the Alleluia. This word
means “praise God” in the Hebrew language. We will not sing this song
of joy during Lent, but we will sing alleluia over and over again once
Lent is finished and Easter comes.

Reader: Today the sunrise was earlier and the sunset will be later. The
days are longer, the death and darkness of winter are giving way to
Spring. This is a celebration of the Season of Lent. It comes every year,
just before Spring. It is a time of new beginnings, a time of budding into
new life. Jesus, the master invites you to make a U-turn, to turn around,
to go a different way than the one we are presently traveling.

Reader: We now ask you all to join in singing Alleluia. One person
please bring forward your alleluia. After all the Alleluias are collected,
they will be placed in a lock box.

Collection of the Alleluia

Reader: Now we remember all that Jesus has done for us. We remember
his Great love.
Someone brings up a bucket of sand.

Reader: Sand reminds us of the desert where Jesus fasted and prayed by
himself. After Jesus was baptized and before he began to teach the
people about God, he went to the desert to be alone and to pray.
Someone carries up the cross and places it in the bucket of sand.
Reader: This cross reminds us that we are friends and followers of Jesus.
In the gospel story written by Matthew, Jesus tells us: “take up your
cross and follow me.” When parents ask us to help with shores at home,
we can take up OUR cross by helping with a smile instead of grumbling
and complaining.
Someone brings forward the crown of thorns and places it on the cross.

Reader: The crown of thorns reminds us that we are friends and

followers of Jesus. In Matthew’s gospels, we read: “The soldiers made a
crown of thorny branches and placed it on his head and put a stick in his
right hand. Then they knelt before him and made fun of him. ‘Long live
the king’ they said.”
As followers of Jesus, we should always be kind to others and never
make fun of anyone.
Someone brings up a purple cloth and drapes it over the cross (two
people)

Reader: The purple cloth reminds us to do penance and to be sorry for

our sins. In a gospel story written by Luke, Jesus tells us that there will
be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99
respectable people who do not need to repent. When we forgive those
who have hurt us, when we tell God that we are sorry for our sins, and
when we ask for forgiveness of those we have hurt, we will become
better peacemakers.
Reader: Please repeat after me.
