Background of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine how Senior High School
students manage stress they got and if it affects their academic performance. This
study involves 10 respondents taken from grade 11 and grade 12 students in Exequiel
R. Lina High School.

This study employed Phenomenology design research and researchers conduct

an interview to obtain data needed in this study. The researchers found out that lot of
school works and activities are common cause of stress.

To cope out with this, students divide their time, create a plan and finish first
what is easy and needed. Generally, even if students didn’t say it directly, they use
time management at all. The researchers finally recommend that (1) students should
always manage their time when doing a lot of school works and they should start
doing it from the easiest to the hardest, (2) teachers should give deadlines that
students are capable to do the tasks on time and they should give their students lesser
school works, (3) parents should guide their children and ask them if they have
problems about their school and (4) researchers should study more about this kind of
research.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Nowadays, stress is a common problem that affects almost all of us at some

point in our lives. It is a fact of life, wherever you are and whatever you are doing.

You cannot avoid stress, but you can learn to manage it so it doesn’t manage you.

Stress is a basic thing of everyday life and there is no way to escape.

According to Medline Plus, stress is a feeling of emotional or physical

tension. It can come from any event or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry,

or nervous. Stress is your body's reaction to a challenge or demand. In short bursts,

stress can be positive, such as when it helps you avoid danger or meet a deadline. But

when stress lasts for a long time, it may harm your health.

Stress management consists of making changes to your life if you are in a

constant stressful situation, preventing stress by practicing self-care and relaxation

and managing your response to stressful situations when they do occur. Not all stress

is bad. Stress is actually a survival response when our body thinks that it is in danger.

That is why our sympathetic nervous system kicks in and makes our heart rate

increase and gives us a burst of the energy hormone, adrenaline, so that we can deal

with whatever situation is being thrown at us. This is also called our flight or fight

response. The problem is when we deal with constant stress and worry, or when we
EXEQUIEL R. LINA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

don't know how to properly manage a stressful situation. That's why stress

management is tremendously important for our health, quality of life and

relationships.

Students are one of the most prone to stress. Accredited Online Schools

presented that a certain level of stress is normal. And positive stress responses from

events such as changing schools and meeting new friends can actually help students

learn and grow. But when exposed to repeated stressful events without the tools to

manage feelings, stress can become emotionally and physically toxic. Unlike adults,

who can communicate about how stress impacts their lives, children and teens may

not recognize or even have the words to describe how they're feeling. Students are

experiencing stress at growing rates, with a 2014 American Psychological

Association study finding teens in the U.S. are even more stressed than adults.

This is the very essence of the study. This study will find out how do senior

high school students manage their stress on their education. Specifically, this study

will lead to how the students will cope with stress. The researcher also hopes to find

out how stress can affect the students’ academic performances.

Theoretical Framework

The theory of stress as a stimulus was introduced in the 1960s, and viewed

stress as a significant life event or change that demands response, adjustment, or

adaptation. Holmes and Rahe (1967) created the Social Readjustment Rating Scale

(SRRS) consisting of 42 life events scored according to the estimated degree of

adjustment they would each demand of the person experiencing them (e.g., marriage,

divorce, relocation, change or loss of job, loss of loved one). Holmes and Rahe

theorized that stress was an independent variable in the health-stress-coping equation

— the cause of an experience rather than the experience itself. While some

correlations emerged between SRRS scores and illness (Rahe, Mahan, & Arthur,

1970; Johnson & Sarason, 1979), there were problems with the stress as stimulus

theory. The stress as stimulus theory assumes:

Change is inherently stressful. Life events demand the same levels of

adjustment across the population. There is a common threshold of adjustment beyond

which illness will result. Rahe and Holmes initially viewed the human subject as a

passive recipient of stress, one who played no role in determining the degree,

intensity, or valence of the stressor. Later, Rahe introduced the concept of

interpretation into his research (Rahe & Arthur, 1978), suggesting that a change or

life event could be interpreted as a positive or negative experience based on cognitive

and emotional factors. However, the stress as stimulus model still ignored important

variables such as prior learning, environment, support networks, personality, and life

experience.

“STRESS MANAGEMENT” AND RELATED CONCEPTS

Stress arises when individuals perceive a discrepancy between the physical or

psychological demands of a situation and the resources of his or her biological,

psychological or social systems (Sarafino, 2012). Problem-focused strategies are

successful in dealing with stressors such as discrimination (Pascoe & Richman,

2009), HIV infections (Moskowitz, Hult, Bussolari, & Acree, 2009) and diabettes

(Duangdao & Roesch, 2008).

Stress can come from many sources, which are known as "stressors." Because

our experience of what is considered "stressful" is created by our unique perceptions

of what we encounter in life (based on our own mix of personality traits, available

resources, habitual thought patterns), a situation may be perceived as "stressful" by

one person and merely "challenging" by someone else. Simply put, one person's stress

trigger may not register as stressful to someone else. That said, certain situations

tend to cause more stress in most people and can increase the risk of burnout. For

example, when we find ourselves in situations where there are high demands on us;

where we have little control and few choices; where we don't feel equipped; where we

may be harshly judged by others; and where consequences for failure are steep or

unpredictable, we tend to get stressed. Because of this, many people are stressed by

their jobs, their relationships, their financial issues, health problems, and more
EXEQUIEL R. LINA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

mundane things like clutter or busy schedules. Learning skills to cope with these

stressors can help reduce your experience of stress (verywell mind)

In this context Lazarus and Folkman (1984, p. 19) considered stress and

coping a dynamic phenomenon and viewed stress as “particular relationship between

the person and his environment, that is appraised by the person as taxing or exceeding

his or her resources and endangering his or her wellbeing”. In this context it can be

said that a person with the developing mind (with high expectation) is more stress

prone when he or she is in a middle track such as do’s or don’ts. If the confusing

situation becomes longer it leads towards prolonged stress, which results in mental

and physical illness. Coffer and Appley, (1967) stated that in psychological stress

the person perceives that, his wellbeing or (integrity) is endangered and that he must

devote his energies to its protection. Vingoi, (1981) stated that the frequent

provocation of frustrating events or situation involving conflict leads towards stress.

This is the genuine process of human life to face stress, because human beings have

to go through these events and situations throughout their life span. So for its

protection it can be minimized by developing appropriate coping procedures,

otherwise it will produce psychopathology. Environment also plays an important role

in the perception of stress and its coping ability. Bower, (1973) viewed that

psychological stress is the result of mismatching between the person and their

environment.

Related Literature

Stress is a perceived phenomenon, hence it is determined by the individual’s

awareness at the situation factors, and his/her own resources. Present article aims to

explore the territory it organizational stressors, since organizations are also

enumerated, in order to help find the emotional cognitive or behavioral techniques

that may help to diminish the negative individual effect on stress. (Kornélia Lazányi,

2012)

The fundamental challenge for retiring theories of stress in communication

management is to understand the assumption that stress produces anxiety. Important

areas of study in this area include the experience and the reality of stress, the rate of

approval and emotion in anxiety management, and the range of behavioral and

psychological responses to stress and anxiety. (Fawad Kaiser, 2018)

Stress word defined as psychological and physiological dimensions where it

derived from physics and mechanics. The banking section is one of the high stress

creating sectors among the women workers. The objectives of this study is to

determine the facts of stress experience by the working women and the factors cause

stress and also an attempt was made to understand the phenomenon at various coping

strategies adopted by the working women in the banking sector. (Mediscope, 2016)

School is the most frequent mentioned source of student’s stress from 13 to 20

years old. A child may be studying always but is not studying effectively, all the same

spent with books might actually be causing the stress. A high school might be a way

at building up a tolerance for stress because of too much homework, testing and

pressure from peers. (Assounated Press/MTR survey, 2009)

Stress is inevitable in any condition and situation. Even a person who is

wealthy, powerful, attractive or happily experience stress. However, stress may take

differently depending on the situation and how are perceives stress. In education,

stress may happen when a student is being a difficult or lazy in examation expenses

an accident, waits in a queue during a day on which everything gave wrong. (Arcelie

G. Santos, 2018)

In the educational field, the woman sources of stress may lead to fear and

anxiety among students are high expectations at parents, teachers or even friends,

academic pressure, competition among classmates, physical set-up, limited

opportunities and ambitions. (Nakatema nd Ssunyuga, 2013)

psychology have been found useful to deal with stress to identify the main reason of

stress is the key to deal with it. Professionals can develop tactical node strategies to

deal with stress. The integrated wellbeing of the students is important not only for the

individual but for the institute as well. (Reddy et al, 2018)

(Flores, 2014) said that a person who is stressed typically less anxious

thoughts and difficulty concentrating or remembering. Stress can also change outward

behaviors. Teeth clenching, handwringing, pacing, nail biting, and heavy breathing

are common signs of stress. People also feel physically different when they are stress.

Butterflies in the stomach, cold hands and feet, dry mouth and increase heart rate are

all physiological effects of stress that we associate with the emotion of anxiety.

According to the annual stress survey conducted by the American

Psychological Association (APA), average stress levels in the United States (U.S.)

rose from 4.9 to 5.1 on a scale from 1 to 10 in 2015. The main reasons given are

employment and money. Stress is the body's natural defense against predators and

danger. It flushes the body with hormones to prepare systems to evade or confront

danger. This is known as the "fight-or-flight" mechanism. (Timothy J. Legg, 2017)

Stress is a fact of nature in which forces from the inside or outside world

affect the individual, either one's emotional or physical well-being, or both. The

individual responds to stress in ways that affect the individual, as well as their

environment. Due to the overabundance of stress in our modern lives, we usually

EXEQUIEL R. LINA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Poblacion Norte, Licab, Nueva Ecija

think of stress as a negative experience, but from a biological point of view, stress can

be a neutral, negative, or positive experience. (Melissa Conrad, 2018)

However, the major source of stress in time management is the time pressure

students with too much to do, effective time management involves establishing and

reconfirming priorities, taking note of how you spend time, and organizing to better

reflect your goals, plans and commitments. It is not just a matter of completing all of

the task presented to us, but at the end of the day, after we have done everything

expected of us to do; we still experience sress, if we have not made time to do thigs

that we think to be more importan (Robinson D. 2009).

Stress is an individual theory. What is stressful for one person is not

necessarily be stressful for another because each person perceived stress differently

and depends on the coping and defense mechanism of their individual (Madrigal

2010).

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the method used in gathering data for this study. This

include research locale where the study was conducted, research design, respondents

of the study, instruments of the study, and the statistical treatment used to analyze the

gathered data.

Research Design

In this study, the researchers use phenomenology research design and

gathered information through the use of interview – survey questionnaire as an

instrument in collecting data. The phenomenology research was used in this study to

determine the stress management of senior high school students of Exequiel R. Lina

High School during First Semester of school year 2019-2020 and to draw out

implications to their academic performance and/or achievement. Phenomenology is

an approach to qualitative research that focuses on the commonality of a lived

experience within a particular group. The fundamental goal of the approach is to

arrive at a description of the nature of the particular phenomenon (Creswell, 2013).

thinking positive.

4. Because of stress they cannot have focused and listen well during class.

Recommendation

1. Students should always manage their time when doing a lot of school works and

they should start doing it from the easiest to the hardest.

2. Teachers should give deadlines that students are capable to do the tasks on time

and they should give their students lesser school works.

3. Parents should guide their children and ask them if they have problems about their

school.

4. Researchers should study more about this kind of research.
