THESIS SYNOPSIS

Title of Thesis Project

“GLOBAL AYURVEDA VILLAGE” An Integrated Centre of Excellence in Ayurveda

Thesis Question / Hypothesis

How certain spaces through architecture can be designed aptly to improve and heal the physical
and mental health of an individual?

Aim and Objectives

1. The project aims to provide an enabling infrastructure, which will address to the current
gaps in the growth path of Ayurveda and enhance the opportunities with value added
service and an integrated approach with all other medicinal system.
2. Absence of Center of excellence in the state.
3. To bench- mark the project with the Global Centers of traditional medicine and develops
it as Integrated Centre of Excellence in Ayurveda to overcome the challenges of this
system of medicine in the path of Global Recognition.
4. To develop this project with a motive to transform Kerala as the “World Capital of
Ayurveda”.
5. To acknowledge that Ayurveda is a way of life. Medicines alone do not bring health to
a person, the lifestyle is important. A solution to the many life-style diseases the new
generation suffers from.

Site Selection and Area
Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation(KINFRA) a State Govt. Agency
has proposed a project “KINFRA Global Ayurveda Village” at Ayiroor
Village,Varkala,Thiruvananthapuram,Kerala.

1. Site for the project is at Varkala which is about 52 KM from State Capital
Thiruvananthapuram and about 10 Km away from National Highway.
2. The Site Co-ordinates are 76o 42’45.97” East and 8o 46’37.55” North.
3. The site is well connected by Air, Rail, Water and Road due to its proximity to state
capital.
4. The nearest International terminal is 90 minutes’ drive away and nearest railway
5. Ground water is available at fairly good level.
6. Site is blessed with natural greenery with coconut trees and water frontage. Length of
water frontage available to the project site is about 1.25 Km and best suitable for
leisure and water sports activity
7. The site measures 20 Acres of land.

Design Brief

 To create a community space focused on well-being, sustainable built environment that


brings about mental and physical healing.
 To develop a relationship between healing, senses and architecture.
 To create an environment that will restore the equilibrium between mind, body and soul.
 To bring about a change in the design approach of health centers and to provide more
opportunities for the same.
 Design spaces that provoke physical health, mental clarity and emotional happiness.
 A space that is of monumental scale and attracts tourists from worldwide.
 To promote the architecture of Kerala and the year old traditions that are celebrated in
the state from the basic art forms to the cuisine and truly state Kerala as ‘God’s own
Country’
 A space where a feeling of community wellbeing is promoted where people experience,
transform, learn and radiate the same to the places they return to.
