Repetition
A simple strategy teachers can use to improve math skills is
repetition. By repeating and reviewing previous formulas,
lessons, and information, students are better able to
comprehend concepts at a faster rate.
Taking a short test and then grading the test in class will help
teachers assess student understanding. When the test shows
that students are answering more questions correctly within
the time period, teachers are able to determine that students
have mastered the basic skills.
Pair work
Mathematics is not limited to learning from a textbook,
lessons, or testing strategy. Students have different learning
styles and need to have lessons that help improve all styles of
learning to get the best results.
Manipulation tools
The use of blocks, fruits, balls, or other manipulation tools
help students learn the basics of place value, addition,
subtraction, and other areas of basic math. According to Kate
Nonesuch on the National Adult Learning Database of Canada,
manipulation tools help slow down the process of problem
solving so that students are able to fully understand the
information.
Math games
Reinforcing the information learned in class is not always the
easiest task for teachers, but math games provide the
opportunity to make the lesson interesting and encourage
students to remember the concepts.
1. Background
“Araw ng Kagitingan”, also known as the Day of Valor, marks the greatness of
the Filipino fighters. This is celebrated every 9th day of April every year to
commemorate the heroism of the soldiers who fought during World War II. This is
also a time to reminisce the important events that happened during the war. The US
Army were forced to surrender more than 76 000 Filipinos, Chinese and American
soldiers to the Japanese and were forced to take the 145-kilometer hike to Camp
O’Donnell in San Fernando, Pampanga on the dawn of April 9, 1942. This hike is
also known as the Death March which started from Balanga, Bataan. Thousands of
prisoners died due to dehydration, too much physical exertion, starvation and
diseases before they were able to reach the camp.
The captured soldiers stood strong despite the trials of defeat. The fall of Bataan
hastened the fall of Corregidor. Despite of this, heroes emerged from the event.
The Day of Valor was a national observance until a Letter of Instruction No.
1087 dated November 26, 1980 made “Araw ng Kagitingan” a national public
holiday to honor the people who brought democracy and freedom in the Philippines
during World War II. On June 30, 1987, Executive Order No. 203 further
proclaimed April 9 as “Araw ng Kagitingan” to pay tribute to the heroes of Bataan,
Corregidor and Bessang.
2. Insights
We should spend this type of holiday to give respect and moments of silence to
pray and recognize the bravery and heroism of the valiant troops who fought for our
country’s independence.
The celebration should never be just about the acts of courage and patriotism of
the Filipino soldiers who fought before us. This is a call for every Filipino to hold on
to our values and when necessary to defend our nation at all times.
Maniniwala Ba Ako?
kaldero at magsaing.
Mabilis siyang pumahik sa bahay at nagmano
bolpen.
