Film Critique: ALADDIN (2019)

TITLE:

As the title suggests, the movie 2019 Disney’s “Aladdin” is based from the its animated movie,

“Aladdin” of 1992. The movie was actually a remake of its original version. The title of the original story

it originated from is “Aladdin and his Magic Lamp” which was written by Galland and was rewritten by

John August for its current version. Although some part of the original animated were not included, as it

is expected for mixing up animated scenes with human actors in live-actions is not really easy and it cost

a lot, it covers all the bases of the original and the result of the movie is very exciting and is a “must

watch” film.

Directed by Guy Ritchie, together with Will Smith being the co-director, the Disney’s movie

“Aladdin” of 2019 is one of the movie you cannot afford to miss.

MAIN CHARACTERS:

Having Mena Massoud as the leading man or the main character who plays the role Aladdin is

indeed great. Compared to its animated version, the figure of the new Aladdin such as having naturally

dark skin color, perfectly matches with its original one.

Having the role Jasmine, Naomi Scott, a movie star, portrays a princess as a feminist heroine who

wants and who really should inherit the position of being a sultan, of course because her father, played by

Navid Nagahban is the sultan. The original Jasmine of the animated version is a little bit showy, wearing

a short shirt, having the belly part of her body to be shown as compared to the current one, who is

wearing a long type of gown and mostly covering the lower part of her face during the earlier part of the

movie.

Being a lively, friendly, and a magical genie, Guy Ritchie, one of the best actors of the Hollywood,

filled the movie with humors and made it a lot more exciting. Displaying magic such as becoming bigger,

transforming into anything, and many more kinds of magic were done a lot more time in its animated

version than in the current one. That is why we can say that Guy Ritchie played his role a lot more safely

but it is more than enough to make the film interesting. Nasim Pedrad who played the role of Dalia,

Jasmine’s loyal maid, was paired with the genie. Well, Dalia is one of the new character added in the film.

Her humor is not bad and being paired with the genie who is also full of humor, they are perfectly

matched. Being the the antagonist in the movie, played by Marwan Kenzari, Jafar, is a very bad person

who resorts to every evil thing just to achieve his goal, is goal is also very bad, of course. Being the worst

person in the movie is actually very good because he displayed his role very well, being a vengeful villain.

Jafar also represents the greediness within the heart of people.

PLOT:

The current version of this movie, “Aladdin”, started on a boat, this part is really much different

from the animated version. At first, you may think that as if they are pirate, but those who watched the

animated version will have a slight clue on who is the one singing in the boat.

The movie was set in the fictional city of Agrabah. Being always chased by guards, Aladdin, a thief

who was raised in the street, become so agile and cunning, making the him always slip from the hands of

the guards. One day, in an ordinary day, that is aslo being chased by the guard, Aladdin saw a beautiful

girl, Jasmine, although the girl’s face is covered, Aladdin can tell that she is a beautiful woman and there is

something special about her identity. One of the difference in the animated story is that, Jasmine did take

a bread, instead of an apple, to give to it to the child. Aladdin thought that Jasmine is the maid of the

princess but the truth is that she is the princess wandering around her kingdom to learn of the situation

her kingdom is facing. It is too late when he learned that Jasmine was the princess for Jafar had already

captured him for entering the castle. Jafar is originally a very cunning thief and a sorcerer who made his

way to the castle. He wanted Aladdin to take a very precious treasure from a very dangerous cave. The

cave collapsed before Aladdin could get out, making Jafar think that he is dead. With the help of the magic

carpet he found in the cave, he survived and was able to seize the precious treasure, the magical lamp

that contains a powerful genie who grants any wish from its master. With the help of the genie, he made

his way to the castle and is going proposing to marry the princess. Because of Jafar’s interventions, there

were tragic turn of events but in the end, Aladdin turned Jafar into the most powerful genie and

imprisoning Jafar into a lamp.

EVELUATION:

The plot of the story is slightly different with the animated version, beside from having some new

characters like Dalia, some parts of the story were changed. One of the difference between the animated

version the and the live-action one is that the genie fell in love with Dalia and he turned into a human in

the end. In the first part of the movie, it is actually the genie who is singing and on the boat, he is with

Dalia and his son and daughter. Another thing that was added in the movie was the dance party led by

the genie singing “Prince Ali” as a grand entrance for Aladdin who is acting to be a prince. This part is

very lively and it is more likely to be in a Bollywood style where group dancing and singing is always

present. In the original version, Jasmine’s mother is a mystery until the end while in the current version,

it is said that her mother was killed.

Jasmine is also a little bit different from the original one. The clothes they wear is very different.

The original one wears a short shirt while the current one wears a long gown with her face always being

covered. This shows that the difference between time somewhat affects the customs and traditions.

In the film, fiminism is strongly shown in the movie by Jasmine. In her song “Speechless”, she

shows how women are treated differently is is empowering the rights woman should have.

The film was so enternaining, even though it covers up two hours whisch is really long, it is worth

watching.
