ABM12
Teenage pregnancy is a situation which involves female adolescents. A teenage female is a
female between 13 to 19 in age. But sometimes preteens (people under 13) can become pregnant as
well. The fact that teenagers become pregnant is related to many factors. These are related to the
specific situation of the teenager, and the group that she interacts with. The rates of teenage pregnancy
vary from country to country and are related to differences of sexual activities, the general sex education
being provided and contraceptives being available.
The issue of teenage pregnancy is widespread in various parts of the country. It is global problem
but occur most often in poorer and marginalized communities. Many girls face considerable pressure
to marry early and become mothers while they are still a child.
WHAT CAUSES TEENAGE PREGNANCY?
 Lack of information about sexual and reproductive health and rights
 Inadequate access to services tailored to young people
 Family, community and social pressure to marry
 Sexual violence
 Child, early and forced marriage, which can be both a cause and a consequence
 Lack of education or dropping out of school

OTHER FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO ADOLESCENT PREGNANCY

Approximately 90% of births to girls aged 15-19 in developing countries occur within early
marriage where there is often an imbalance of power, no access to contraception and pressure on girls
to prove their fertility.

Factors such as parental income and the extent of a girl’s education also contribute. Girls who
have received minimal education are 5 times more likely to become a mother than those with higher
levels of education. Pregnant girls often drop out of school, limiting opportunities for future employment
and perpetuating the cycle of poverty. In many cases, girls perceive pregnancy to be a better option
than continuing their education.

Table 1: Early pregnancy Data: 2000-2010

According to GMA News Online from the National Statistics Office showed that the number of
live births by teenage mothers in the Philippines rose by more than 60 percent for past 20 years. From
2000 to 2010
NSO data also revealed that the number of teenage mothers who gave birth to their second
(and third, fourth, and even their fifth) baby during their teenage years likewise increased in the last
10 years, according to data presented at a press conference in Quezon City on Monday by Carmelita
Ericta, administrator and civil registrar general of the National Statistics Office.
A total of 207,898 mothers aged below 20 years old gave birth in 2010. In 2000, however, this
number was only 126,025, NSO said.
This rise in statistics is also reflected in the 2011 annual report of the United Nations
Population Fund (UNFPA)-Philippines, which showed that teen pregnancy in the Philippines went up
by 70 percent from 114,205 in 1999 to 195,662 in 2009.
Statistics show that more and more female teenagers are giving birth and becoming mothers
at an early age. This is a global trend, but it is striking to note that in the ASEAN region, the
Philippines has the third highest teen pregnancy rate and is the only country in the region where the
rate is increasing, data from the National Youth Commission showed.

Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data of Early Pregnancy, Region XII:

2011-2014

According to the Regional Development Council (RDC) XII conducted on May 31, 2017.
Based on the 2011-2014 Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data, around 12% of the total births in
the Philippines, were born by mothers 10-19 years old and the remaining 88% by mothers 20-49 years
old. The data also showed that about one in every ten women of child-bearing age was a teenager.
Further, teenage pregnancy among 17 to 19 year old, had higher prevalence compared to the 10 to 16
age bracket.
In 2012 to 2013, Region XII teenage pregnancy decreased in number by 141 and 190, respectively.
However, between 2013 and 2014, the prevalence increased by 340 cases or 7.46 percent.

The increasing prevalence of teenage pregnancy is one of the challenges faced by the region
that impacts on demographic transition needed to achieve a sustained economic growth resulting
from a decrease in the non-working persons in the total population
Teenage pregnancy in the country is highest in three of Mindanao’s six regions. Davao region
recorded the highest teenage pregnancy rate nationwide at 17.9%, Northern Mindanao at 14.7% and
Region 12 or what is also referred to as Southwestern Mindanao or Soccsksargen at 14.5%
compared with the national average of 8.6%, the 2017 National Demographic and Health Survey
(NDHS) showed.
At least 16% of the teenage women who have begun childbearing have had live birth and 2%
were pregnant with first child at the time of the survey.

National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS).

Three Mindanao regions have highest teenage pregnancies in the country

According to Colina (2018), Teenage pregnancy in the country is highest in three of

Mindanao’s six regions.
Davao region recorded the highest teenage pregnancy rate nationwide at 17.9%, Northern
Mindanao at 14.7% and Region 12 or what is also referred to as Southwestern Mindanao or
Soccsksargen at 14.5% compared with the national average of 8.6%, the 2017 National Demographic
and Health Survey (NDHS) showed.

The result of the survey, administered on women aged 15 to 19 years old who have had given
birth or were pregnant with their first child, was released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)
regional office here on Saturday.
The number of teenage pregnancies in the five-province, six-city Davao region is almost
double the national average.
At least 16% of the teenage women who have begun childbearing have had live birth and 2%
were pregnant with first child at the time of the survey.
Davao region comprises the provinces of Davao Del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur,
Davao Occidental and Compostela Valley and the cities of Davao, Digos, Panabo, Samal, Tagum
and Mati.
The survey noted that two other Mindanao provinces — Northern Mindanao (14.7%) and
Region 12 Soccsksargen (14.5%) placed second and third highest, respectively.
Northern Mindanao comprises the provinces of Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis
Oriental and Misamis Occidental and the cities of Malaybalay, Valencia, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan,
Tangub, Oroquieta and Ozamiz.
Region 12 comprises South Cotabato, North Cotabato, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat and the
cities of Koronadal, General Santos, Kidapawan, Tacurong and Cotabato.
While the three Mindanao regions post the highest in teenage pregnancy, the three other
regions recorded lower than the national average: 7.5% in Zamboanga Peninsula, 8.2% in Caraga,
and 8.5% in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
Nationwide, the Cordillera Administrative Region posted the lowest at 3.5%.
Of the 25,074 women surveyed for the NDHS, at least 5,120 were teenagers from 15 to 19
years old.
