Message for THE LORD’S DAY MORNING, December 25, 2011

They Called Him Jesus

LUKE 1: 26-31

26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth,

a town in Galilee,

27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named

Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was
Mary.

28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings you who are highly
favored! The Lord is with you.”

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind
of greeting this might be.

30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have
found favor with God.

31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to
give him the name Jesus.”

PRAYER

Introduction
Before you were ever born, there’s a good chance your parents agonized
for weeks or months over what to name you. Perhaps some of you men
bear the same name as your father. Perhaps some of you women bear
the name of your grandmother or one of your aunts.

*Some people have very common names like Bob or George or

David…………or ……..Mary or Martha or Betty.

*Others have unusual names. I know a man named Ronda, and

one named Francis, and another named Bernice. I once met
a woman in a Church where I was holding a Revival named
America. I went to school with a girl named Suetta Spears.

*I know a preacher named Harry Pitts and one named Ivan Odor.

HUMOROUS ILLUSTRATION:

For those of you who have never really liked your name, consider this
poor fella:

His name was William Stinks. After being teased about his
name all through childhood and his school years, William
Stinks decided to legally change his name when he turned
twenty one.

As he stood before the judge, the judge asked him to state

his name. He replied, “My name is William Stinks.”
Trying to contain his laughter, the judge said, “With all due
respect sir, I can understand why you would like to change
your name. So tell me William Stinks, what would like to
change your name to?” Mr. Stinks said, “I would like to
change my name to Phil.”

On this Christmas morning, let us focus our attention on THE NAME

THAT IS ABOVE EVERY OTHER NAME.

The angel GABRIEL told MARY………….

“You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you
are to give him the name, JESUS.” (Luke 1: 31)

I want to share with you what MAX LUCADO said about the precious
Name of JESUS in his wonderful book, entitled: “God Came
Near.”

“Many of the names in the Bible that refer to our Lord

Are nothing less than palatial and august: Son of God,
The Lamb of God, The Light of the World, The Resurrection
and the Life, The Bright and Morning Star, the Alpha and
Omega.

But there is one name which recalls a quality of the Master that
bewildered and compelled those who knew Him. It reveals a side
of Him that, when recognized, is enough to make you fall on your
face. Its not too small, nor is it too grand. It is a name that fits
like the shoe fit Cinderella’s foot. The name JESUS.

---------------------------------------

The name JESUS was one of the most common names in Jesus’ day.

-The name JESUS appears nearly 600 times in the

Four Gospels.

-The name JESUS was the Greek form of the Hebrew

Name Joshua or Jeshua, names that appear
regularly throughout the Old Testament.

-In his historical record of the Jewish people, Josephus mentions at

least 21 different men who bore the name JESUS.

The name JESUS was so common that had he attended Nazareth

Elementary School, there likely would have been two or three other
boys in his class named JESUS.
Had JESUS been born in our day and time, perhaps he would
Have been named “JOE”………or………”JIM”………or ….”BOB.”

The point is this: JESUS would never have distanced

Himself from the common man by calling himself:
“The Right Reverend”……….or…..”The Holy Superior”
“The Pope” or “The Pontiff.”

He would have simply told people, “You can just call me JESUS.”

-------------------------

Oh Christians, let’s not overlook a very wonderful TRUTH on this

CHRISTMAS MORNING.

Although JESUS was certainly the most “uncommon” man

Who ever lived…………HE WORE A NAME THAT WAS SO
COMMON………………it made Him “accessible” and
“approachable”……..to the most common of people,
Including the “vilest of sinners.”

……….THE LOWLY SHEPHERDS approached JESUS

In a MANGER.

……….LITTLE CHILDREN crawled up in JESUS’ lap.

……….THE ADULTEROUS woman lay at JESUS’ feet.

……….A LOWLY HATED TAX COLLECTOR , named Zacchaeus

took Jesus home with him.

……….A DISEASED WOMAN reached out and touched

The hem of HIS garment.

……….A LITTLE BOY handed his lunch over to JESUS.

……….A SINFUL WOMAN anointed His feet with costly

perfume.

Sure, there were people who MOCKED his NAME………and DESPISED HIS
NAME…………and ……HATED His Name. But there was no one, I repeat,
no one who ever felt that Jesus was so “lofty” they couldn’t approach
Him or draw near to Him.
APPLI CATI ON

It has been 2,000 YEARS since JESUS left this world and returned to the
right hand of HIS HEAVENLY FATHER.

And JESUS is still inviting you and me to COME NEAR TO HIM!

-If you are BURDENED or BROKENHEARTED or LONELY

Jesus invites you to come near.

-If you are in DESPAIR, DISCOURAGED or DEPRESSED, Jesus

invites you to come near.

-If you are SAD or GRIEVING, Jesus invites you to come near.

-And yes, EVEN IF YOUR LIFE IS STAINED WITH AWFUL SINS

Jesus invites you to come near to Him.

No matter what your station in life or what your situation may

be, Jesus will never turn you away.

What is it that is keeping you from drawing near to Jesus?

Is it pride? Is it shame? Is it guilt? Whatever it is, Jesus
invites you to come near.

You know one day every human being who ever lived is going to bow
before JESUS, just as the SHEPHERDS and THE WISE MEN.

The apostle Paul writes in Philippians 2.…….

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and

gave him the name that is above every name,

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth.

11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord

to the glory of God the Father. (PHILIPPIANS 2:9-11)

One Day……..Kennedy, Reagan, Carter, Clinton, Bush and Obama

will all bow before Jesus.
One Day…….. Hitler, Ghadaffi, Hussein and Bin Laden will all bow
before Jesus.

One Day……..Shakespeare, Milton, Hemingway, Mozart and Beethoven

will all bow before Jesus.

One Day………Pelosi, Reid, Bhoener, Sharpton, Jackson , Rangel and

Franks will all bow before Jesus.

One Day………Every Hollywood elitists, every Sports Superstar, every

TV personality and every Music idol will bow before Jesus.

One day it won’t matter how famous, how powerful, how

popular or how great one was, every man, woman and
child who ever lived will bow before Jesus.

*Some will humbly bow before Jesus as their Savior

*While sadly, many will shamefully bow before Jesus

as their judge.

Jesus, Name above all Names. Beautiful Savior, glorious

LORD. Immanuel, God is with us, blessed Redeemer,
Living Word.

O Come let us adore Him!

O Come let us adore Him!
O Come let us adore Him, CHRIST, THE LORD!
