AND CPM

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

• ITIS A SYSTEMATIC WAY OF PLANNING, SCHEDULING, EXECUTING,

MONITORING, CONTROLLING THE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT IN
ORDER TO ATTAIN THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT.
• TOOLS:
• PERT and CPM ARE TWO NETWORK-BASED PROJECT MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES,
WHICH EXHIBIT THE FLOW AND SEQUENCE OF THE ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS.
PERT

• PROGRAM (PROJECT) MANAGEMENT AND REVIEW TECHNIQUE

• PERT is a technique, used to manage the uncertain task of a project.
• METHOD:
• Recognize the events and activities → decide the sequence → create a network diagram →
determine time needed for each activity → manage the critical path → update the PERT
chart as project progresses.
• WHY:
• Helps understand the technique of project completion
• Helps control time by calculating the minimum time taken for completing the project
ADVANTAGES OF PERT

• Planning for Large Projects

• Used to show the critical path in a clear way
• Provide the management with the progress report and the completion of the
project including the budget
• Helps in improving the communication within different departments of the
company.
• What-ifs Analysis: helps recognize the risks
DISADVANTAGES OF PERT

• Time is of the essence

• Subjective Analysis as PERT is applicable for the only new project are which is
not repetitive in nature.
• Prediction Inaccuracy
• Expensive
CPM

• CRITICAL PATH METHOD

• CPM is a statistical technique used to manage the well-defined activities of a project.
• METHOD:
• list of all activities prepared → time required for each activity noted → then dependency
connecting the activities is decided → series of the activity in a network is defined as a path.
• WHY:
• Helps to distinguish the critical and non critical tasks. This is necessary, because if any critical
activity is hampered, it will disrupt the whole project.
• It helps in reducing time and bypass the queue formation in the process.
ADVANTAGES OF CPM

• Provides an outline for long term coordination and planning of a project.

• Recognizes critical activities
• Easy to plan, schedule, and control project
• improves productivity
• Manages the resource needed
DISADVANTAGES OF CPM

• Difficult to understand for beginners

• Expensive
• Time consuming at times
• Cannot control and form the schedule of a person involved in the project
• Allocation of resources cannot be monitored properly
PERT VS CPM
BASIS PERT CPM
Method To control time To control cost and time
Progress Research and development Construction project
project
Manage Unpredictable activities Predictable activities
Accuracy of duration Not accurate and definite Fairly accurate
Appropriate for Large-scale projects Non-research project. Example-
ship building, civil construction
Orientation Event Activity
Activities Probabilistic Model Deterministic Model
Estimates Three Time One Time
