Chapter 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter includes the research design, subjects of the study,

instruments in data gathering, procedures and statistical treatment used in the

findings.

Research Design

This study will make use of the descriptive comparative and descriptive

associational method of research. It will describe all relevant data and

information on the level of occupational stress incurred by civil engineers of the

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) including the coping

strategies they have adopted and how these major variables relate with their

work performance.

The descriptive comparative method will be employed when discussing

and analyzing the personal-professional attributes of the respondents, the extent

of seriousness of their incurred stressors categorized into: a) stress emanating

from work content and b) stress emanating from work context, and the extent of

effectiveness of their coping strategies adopted.

Descriptive associational method will be used to establish the relationship

between the respondents’ extent of seriousness of incurred stressors and their

work performance qualified in terms of the performance ratings. Likewise, the

23
24

extent of effectiveness of the coping strategies will be tested as to its relationship

on the extent of seriousness of the adopted coping strategies.

Sources of Data

Locale of the Study

The four provinces of Region I composed of ten (10) District Engineering

Offices (DEOs) of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is the

locale of the study.

Population Sampling

The respondents of this study will include all the civil engineers of the

DEOs of DPWH in the four provinces of Region I. It will be making use of the

total population of all civil engineers occupying a position of Engineer II up to

District Engineer or a total of 150 personnel. The breakdown of the personnel by

field office is as follows:

Instrumentation and Data Collection

This study will make use of two data gathering instruments: 1) primary

data on the respondents’ experienced stressors and coping strategies adopted,

and 2) secondary data which are the actual performance evaluation results of the

DPWH civil engineers in two (2) semesters during the fiscal year 2019.

The researcher-made questionnaire will be purposely made for the study based

on the constructed problems. It will be used to gather data as regards the

stressors experienced by the respondents as well as the coping strategies they

have adopted.

The sources or nature of occupational stressors incurred are categorized

as to: a) work content or work context following the categorization made by Leka
26

(2004). However, the specific contents under each type of occupational stressor

has been provided for by the researcher.

On the other hand, the 5 categories of coping strategies are adopted from

Borja (2003) and these include the following: a) on self-knowledge, b) on varied

interest, c) on varied reactions, d) on acceptance of other values and e) on

activities and productive activities.

The questionnaire will be divided into three (3) major parts: a) Part I deals

on the personal and professional attributes of the respondents, b) Part II deals on

the extent of seriousness of the incurred stressors and c) Part III deals on the

extent of effectiveness of the coping strategies adopted.

The content validity and reliability of the questionnaire will be determined

to ensure that it is acceptable as a questionnaire for this study. Content validity

will be done thru the use of a content validity instrument which will be

administered to 5 experts. The Richard Kuderson Formula will be used to

determine the reliability index of the questionnaire.

Tools for Data Analysis

The data collected will be tabulated and analyzed as a basis for inferential

analysis.

Problem 1
27

The profile of the respondents will be described qualitatively, that is using

frequency counts, percentages and mean.

Problem 2

The level of job performance of the DPWH civil engineers will be

determined thru a secondary data analysis of the results of their performance

evaluation ratings for the two (2) semesters of immediate past year, 2018.

Problem 3

The significant difference in job performance of DPWH civil engineers

when group according to their profile?

Civil status, sex,..

Problem 4

The extent of occupational stress experienced by the DPWH civil

engineers alongside the sources/nature of stress: The extent of seriousness of

the DPWH civil engineers experienced stressors will be qualified in terms of the

average weighted mean. The AWM value were described in terms of the scale

mean, interpreted as follows:

Scale Mean Descriptive Rating

4.51- 5.00 Extremely serious

3.51- 4.00 Very serious

2.51- 3.50 Moderately serious

28

1.51- 2.50 Slightly serious

1.00- 1.50 Not serious

The value scale will be computed by multiplying the number of frequencies

by the assigned numerical value of each column, adding the products along the

rows and dividing the final sum by the number of replies to the specific items.

Problem 5

The significance of the relationship between stress and job

performance of DPWH civil engineers will be determined using the F-test

(Analysis of Variance)

Problem 6

The extent of effectiveness of the various coping strategies along

stressors and work context adopted by the DPWH civil engineers. The stressors

will be qualified in terms of the average weighted mean. The AWM value will be

described in terms of the scale mean, interpreted as follows:

Scale Mean Descriptive Rating

4.51- 5.00 Extremely Effective

3.51- 4.50 Highly Effective

2.51- 3.50 Moderately Effective

1.51- 2.50 Less Effective

1.0- 1.50 Not Effective

29

Problem 7

The significance of the intervention measures to address stress/coping

strategies adopted by the DPWH civil engineers for better job performance using

the F-test (Analysis of Variance).

Ethical Considerations

Prior to the conduct of the study, the permission of the DPWH Regional

Director will be secured. After the approval for the conduct of the study in the

different DPWH Region I District Engineering Offices has been secured, the

formulated questionnaire will be personally administered to all DPWH civil

engineer-respondents.
