1.1 Background of the Study

Coconut plantations have been across the world there are many plantations of coconuts in

different countries such in Asian countries. Coconut doesn’t only provide food for many

individuals but also it provides such benefits in making a concrete material Coconut fibers are the

most useful in making experiments such as these types of concrete material the world now needs

something better and stronger, but how will these coconut help in the innovation of the world

today.

Abundant availability of natural fiber like coconut fiber has focused on the development

of green composites primarily to explore value-added application avenues. Such natural fiber

composites are well suited as substitutes in housing & construction sector.

According to research, “Coir is the name given to the fibrous material that constitutes the

thick mesocarp (middle layer) of the coconut fruit (Cocos nucifera). The husk of the coconut

contains approximately 75 per cent fiber and 25 per cent fine material, the so-called ‘coir pith’

(Maher, 2008).

Hence, Coconut coir is a byproduct of coconut fiber. “It was first used in gardening in the

West in the 19th century but fell out of favor because the low-quality coco available at the time

degraded when used for short-term growing. Toward the end of the 20th century, it was

rediscovered as an organic, environmentally sustainable substrate when new production methods

made it possible to create hardier product.” (AdvancedNutrients, 2018)

Coconut coir can improve the strength and composition of hollow blocks in construction

works. It benefits the people wanting their infrastructures or buildings a better place and based on

initial findings, the use of coconut coir in replacing elements in the composition of hollow blocks
is highly proposed since coconut coir aggregated significantly affected the strength of concrete

hollow block.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The researchers conducted the following assessments to prove the hypotheses of their

experimental study:

1. Collection and testing of materials needed:

1.1 Cement

1.1.1 Brand of cement used

1.1.2 Mechanical strength

1.1.3 Durability

1.1.4 Porosity and Density

1.1.5 Impact resistance

1.2 Coarse and Fine Aggregates

1.2.1 Durability

1.2.2 Grading

1.2.3 Absorption and Surface Moisture

1.3 Raw and Processed Coconut Coir

1.3.1 Quantity of materials needed in a block

1.3.2

1.4 Water

1.5 Admixture

1.5.1 Type of Admixture used

2. What is the difference of concrete hollow blocks and coconut coir concrete hollow

blocks in terms of the following condition?

2.1 Compressive strength of both hollow blocks

2.2 Flexural strength

2.3 Split tensile strength

3. What are the effects of coconut coir to the concrete in terms of the following?

3.1 Impact resistance

3.2 Porosity and density

3.3 Ductility

4. What are the improvements of the concrete hollow blocks with coconut coir?

1.3 Hypotheses

1.4 Conceptual Framework

INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT

Testing of
Materials
Mixing
Collecting of Molding Analysis and
Materials Curing Conclusion
Drying
Testing of
specimen

The researchers create a conceptual framework and used the input-process-ouput model

for the foundation of their experiment. For the input of the experiment, the researchers will collect

materials that are needed for their experiment. They will determine its price, weight, and brand.
For the process of the study, the researchers formed five steps that will prove the

experiment. First, the materials collected were tested to determine if the materials are suitable to

be used in concrete. Second, the materials were being mixed using two processes. The first process

of mixing is assorted at a suitable water content and the desired mix was obtained. The second

process is that the mixing was brought out according to the standard procedure that was given to

ensure that there is no problem happened throughout the process and to see if the mixture was

workable. Third, the product was cured for 7 and 28 days and were dried in the sunlight correctly

before testing of the specimen. And lastly, the researcher will analyze and answer their assumption

and will provide their conclusion.

Lastly, the output of the study is the effectiveness of coconut coir as fiber reinforcement

for concrete hollow blocks. The researchers made tests to make sure that the materials used are

suitable, and researchers made sure that the mixing, passed the standard procedure that were given.

the purpose of the test that were made was to ensure that there was no error occurred throughout

the process and to see that the mixture is workable.

1.5 Theoretical Framework

According to Cheryl Torrie, an EHow contributor, architects and structural engineers

design building with concrete blocks for a number of important properties: high structural capacity,

resistance to fire, resistance to water, variety of aesthetic possibilities.

As the researchers have found, according to D. Chandramohan & K. Marimuthu, common

fiber reinforced composites are composed of fibers. Fibers are the reinforcement and the main

source of strength. The fibers carry the loads along their longitudinal directions.
Based on the textileschool.com on the topic of coconut fiber belongs to the group of hard

structural fibers. It is an important commercial product obtained from the husk of coconut.

Moreover, basing from the theories mentioned, the researchers wanted to know that using coconut

coir as a fiber reinforcement for concrete hollow blocks.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation

1.7 Significance of the Study

The experiment conducted by the researchers is significant to the following:

Engineers and Engineering students. Through this research study, engineers and

engineering students will benefit in this experiment because they will become aware of the

materials that are going to strengthen the foundation of their construction and projects.

Citizens. Through this experiment, citizens will become aware about the importance and

benefits of making coconut coir concrete hollow blocks with the waste management in the country.

Future Researchers. This experiment will benefit the future researcher because it can be

their basis for their topic or conducted study.
