vinced him to move to the desert.

“The money was $3,000 more a year than I was
making,” the 91-year-old Cathedral City resident said.
Tasked with starting the music program, Norman
earned $8,500 for the 1962-63 school year.
Although money was the driving force, Norman ar-
rived at COD with some reservations about his deci-
sion. Leaving a university professorship to come to a
community college wasn’t considered a “step up” in
academia.
“But the president of the college was a Yale graduate
and honest to God, every one of the people at COD, I
could have taught with at any university I’d ever been
before,” Norman said.
The college’s first President, Dr. Roy McCall, insist-
ed on the same professionalism from the faculty that
was expected at any four-year college across the coun-
try, Norman recalled.
“He said, ‘I know it’s hot out here, but I expect you to
look like professors at other colleges and I expect you
to wear suits and ties,’” Norman said.
The campus was unlike anything he’d seen in his
career. He was used to the “beautiful big brick build-
ings” that graced the grounds of big-name universi-
ties. At COD, the buildings were cement and the stark
surroundings featured date palms and endless acres of
sand.
“I remember walking on planks from building to Dr. John Norman looks through his album collection. DENISE GOOLSBY/THE DESERT SUN
building because there were no sidewalks there,” Nor-
man recalled. “We started in August and the building
that English and social studies was in, the air-condi-
tioning was not working in it.”
The first year, Norman and Hall divvied-up the mu-
sic department curriculum.
“Gene was basically an instrumentalist,” Norman
explained. “He took half of the academic and all of the
instrumental, and I took half of the academic and all of
piano and chorale.”
Besides directing the choir and vocal ensemble,
Norman gave private piano lessons during his tenure
at the college.
According to a story in the Nov. 7, 1977 edition of The
Desert Sun, Norman was one of the busiest teachers
during those first weeks after College of the Desert
opened on Sept. 21, 1962. That’s because a formal dedi-
cation ceremony was planned for Nov. 11, and Norman
was determined to have a choir ready to sing. He had
one month to prepare his students for a performance
in the center courtyard of the new campus.
Dr. McCall, the college’s president, said it couldn’t
be done. On opening day, the music department con-
sisted of a portable record player, one bass drum and
three upright pianos, Norman said.
But the music professor pulled it together. That No-
vember, a 14-voice choir sang “Gloria in Excelsis Deo”
by Schubert, with Hellian Aquino as the soprano and
Thomas Pickell as baritone.
Teresa Castro-Oistad, who attended COD in the
early 1970s, said some of her fondest memories from
performing under Doc’s direction came from an en-
semble and choir retreat he held in Idyllwild every se-
mester.
“It was nonstop singing, rehearsing, starting Friday College of the Desert Vocal Ensemble, 1972-73. In the front row, Teresa Castro Oistad is second from right

Holidays on the highway

How a full-time RV family marks special occasions
Julie Sprankles MAKEITGRATEFUL.COM

of curiosity. ❚ Prior to transitioning into this lifestyle, my husband and I assumed we’d hear a chorus of

times typically spent with relatives and other loved ones?

On June 28, 1969, the two-day Stonewall Riots started after a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in Green-
wich Village in New York. It was the beginning of the gay liberation movement in America. This year, the
theme of Pride celebrations throughout the country is "A Million Moments," celebrating the 50th anniver-
sary of the Stonewall Riots. Some of those moments in time include the nation's first Pride event in New
York a year later in 1970, the first National Coming Out Day in 1988, the Supreme Court striking down the
Defense of Marriage Act in 2013, and the victories of everyday LGBTQ people. See PRIDE, Page 4C

Getting off track

These weekend getaways in Thailand let you beat the crowds
Nicole Evatt ASSOCIATED PRESS

BANGKOK – Thailand’s southern beaches lure travelers with their turquoise water and dramatic limestone cliffs, but
there’s more to explore in the Southeast Asian country that’s one of the world’s most popular destinations. For a Thai
road less traveled, try one of these getaways outside Bangkok, far from the overly Instagrammed backpacker hotspots
or the party scene of Phuket or Pattaya. See THAILAND, Page 9C

Wat Tang Sai is a Buddhist temple perched atop Thong Chai Mountain in Ban Krut in the Prachuap Khiri Khan province of Thailand. You won’t find the party scene of
Phuket or Pattaya in laid-back Ban Krut, but you will get one of the cleanest and quietest stretches of white sand within driving distance of the capital.
