When a load is placed on the scale, the force due
to gravity is transferred from the platform (1) to the

The long load lever (2) transmits the force via the

is reduced in accordance with the transmission
ratio of the load lever. The force applied to the

long load lever via the centre suspension (4).

A bending load acts on the bending element that

increases the tensile force acting on the

its resonant frequency in a non-linear way, which is
measured by the connected electronics (8) and
converted into a weight using the stored

Low-end module - brief description
Introduction
The low-end module is a member of the seca electronics module family and is used to determine
weights by means of a tuning-fork sensor and to show these weights on an LC display. The module
is used in scales where the display unit and the load sensor are installed in the immediate vicinity
and where only the standard functions such as Tare and Hold are available. The module is fitted with
an EEPROM that can be used to configure the module, thus allowing the module to be adapted to
different scales. A SeSAM bus (serial self-configuring multi-controller bus developed by seca)
connection has also been provided to allow the module to be adjusted via the scales and to allow
additional modules to be connected.
The block diagram below shows the most important function blocks of the load sensor and the low-
end module:

Measuring
A tuning-fork sensor screwed to a flexible body serves as the weight sensor. When a load is placed
onto the scales, the tuning-fork sensor is subjected to a tensile force via the flexible body and the
resonance frequency of the sensor increases. The band pass incites the sensor to oscillate at this
frequency, which is then measured by the microcontroller.
The controller uses the measured values and the individual calibration data stored in the EEPROM to
calculate the weight.
The first value available after the scales have been switched on is used as the zero point. If the
subsequent values differ only slightly from this value, the zero point will be adjusted accordingly to
compensate for possible drifting.
When connecting the sensor, make sure that the cables are not twisted to prevent crosstalk between
the output and the input.

Display
The weight shown on the LCD is updated approx. every 0.8 seconds. Up to five digits and some
special characters can be shown on the display.

00604_e1.doc 1 07.07.1999
EE/Jensen
The special characters have the following meaning:
• The battery symbol warns that the battery will soon be discharged.
• Hold indicates that the weight display is frozen.
• Tare and Net indicate that the weight on the scales has been tared.
• The arrow pointing to the left indicates that there are further explanations next to the display.
• The weight units on the right-hand side indicate the unit in which the measured value is shown.

Temperature measurement
The measured value of the tuning-fork sensor depends on the temperature; therefore, the
temperature is measured at regular intervals to correct the measured value accordingly.

Voltage supply
Four round cells provide the required voltage for normal operation. The voltage is conducted from
the cells via a polarization diode to a series regulator which provides a stabilized 3V supply voltage.
To avoid measuring errors when the batteries are almost empty, the battery voltage is measured at
regular intervals. When the voltage measured drops below a defined value, a battery symbol
appears on the LCD as a warning. After the voltage has dropped below the next threshold, the text
“bAtt” appears on the display and weighing is no longer possible.
In the case of scales intended for continuous operation, a continuous power supply is ensured by
seca (table) power supply units with a plug. It is also possible to use rechargeable batteries;
however, the batteries cannot charged while in the scales.

Operation
The scales are fitted with one to four keys. Except for the start key (if installed), these keys can be
configured according to the requirements for the respective model. They can be pressed either
briefly or long (more than 1.5 seconds) so that a maximum of six events may be available. The keys
can be assigned the actions Tare, Hold and Change of Unit.
If a second key is pressed while switching on the scales, the calibration counter and the recalibration
mode are called up.
The normal start button can be replaced with a piezo-membrane that is soldered to connector PI. In
this case, the microcontroller is switched on when the piezo-membrane detects vibrations.
If the start button is soldered to connector ST, the button is only active when the scales are switched
off. In this case, the button can, for example, be installed below the footboard so that the scales are
switched on by briefly tapping on the board.

EEPROM
The low-end module is fitted with an EEPROM that holds all parameters that can be used for
influencing the program sequences, such as the type of weight display or the key assignment. In
addition, it contains the coefficients for the weight determination and the temperature compensation.
The EEPROM can also be used to store parameters of the scales that shall be available the next time
the scales are switched on, such as the weight unit shown last.

Serial bus
The low-end module is equipped with an interface to the SeSAM bus to calibrate the scales and to
connect further modules, such as additional displays, to the scales.
This bus provides both the regulated and the unregulated supply voltage. A data and a clock line
make the relevant data available to other modules. A separate start line can be used to switch on the
scales or to poll data from other modules.

Error handling
Any errors that occur are reported along with the pertaining number on the SeSAM bus. The error
messages also include the number of the module type in which the error occurred and an
identification number that indicates how long the error message is to be displayed and which
displays are to be suppressed.
The low-end module uses its LCD to display error messages of its own, giving the module type (“0”
for the low-end module) and the error number.
The following error messages have been implemented:

10 Overflow of the 20-bit counter

11 Counts outside the permissible range
12 Zero point after switching on outside the permissible range
13 Zero point compensation outside the permissible range
14 Error during kg value calculation
15 Error during recalibration
20 Battery voltage too low
21 Error during measurement of the battery voltage
22 Error during temperature measurement
23 Temperature outside the permissible range (< 0°C or > 50°C)
30 General bus error
32 Command buffer is full
33 More than 8 slaves detected
40 EEPROM error
41 Wrong EEPROM access
50 Other errors

For error message 20, the text “bAtt” appears on the display, and for error message 23, the text
“temP”.

Time base
The frequency of the quartz (4.19 MHz) is used to derive a time base that controls all time-
dependent processes in the scales, such as the timeouts and the switch-on time.
After the switch-on time has elapsed, the supply voltage for the band pass, voltage measurement
and the EEPROM are switched off. The LCD is switched off, all ports are set to the idling level and
the voltage supply for the quartz is switched off.

Recalibration
The module is fitted with a recalibration function that allows linear measuring errors of the scales
such as those caused by different forces of gravity in different geographic locations to be
compensated. To start the recalibration function, a second key must be pressed when switching on
the scales. When this is done, the calibration counter is shown. This counter is incremented by 1
each time the scales are recalibrated. In this way, it is possible to check whether the scales have
been manipulated. If the key is pressed long enough (more than 1.5 seconds) within five seconds,
the recalibration mode is called up. The scales determine the zero point and then wait for a load of at
least ¼ of the maximum load to be placed onto the scales. The displayed weight can now be
decremented or incremented in steps of 10 g until the value of the applied weight has been reached
by briefly pressing the key. The direction can be changed by pressing the key for a longer moment.
Pressing the key for more than 5 seconds completes the recalibration process. The recalibration
procedure can be cancelled at any time by switching off the scales via the On/Off key or by not
pressing keys for a longer time.

Optional functions
00604_e1.doc 3 07.07.1999
EE/Jensen
The functions “Tare”, “Hold”, “Autohold” and “Replace measured value with repeated
measurements” can be activated in the EEPROM program. These functions have the following
meaning:

Tare:
By programming the EEPROM accordingly, one of the keys can be assigned the tare function.
Provided that the weight is within the permissible range, pressing this key then causes the weight to
be tared after the display has become stable. Pressing the key again causes either the tare function
to be switched off or the weight to be newly tared (depending on the setting).

Hold and Autohold:

If, by programming the EEPROM accordingly, one of the keys is assigned the hold function, then the
weight shown on the display will be frozen as soon as it is stable after this key has been pressed. If
desired, the hold function can also be automated so that the weight value, after having become
stable, is always frozen if a defined threshold is exceeded.
The hold function is switched off after a set time has elapsed or when the key is pressed again. The
scales can also be configured in such a manner that the hold function is switched off when the load
has been removed from the scales, when the load has been removed and a new load has been
applied and / or when the applied load has significantly changed.

Replace measured value with repeated measurements:

The scales can be configured in such a manner that during measurement the weight value shown
last is output again if the scales determine that almost the same weight has been applied.

Description of the calibration mode for scales with modular
electronics

General:
Seca scales with modular electronics are fitted with a software-controlled calibration device
that is operated using the existing controls. This device can be used to recalibrate the
scales or to set the scales to different GAL values. During development of the calibration
device, special attention was paid to the following requirements:

• It must be possible to recalibrate the scales without any additional external

equipment/tools.
• It must be possible to calibrate the calibration device.
• It must be possible to recalibrate the scales without calibrated test weights.
• The calibration device shall be protected against inadvertent use.

Calibration counter
The scales fitted with the new, modular electronics are equipped with a calibration counter
allowing a software recalibration to be carried out according to the requirements for
calibrated scales. To carry out such a recalibration, the calibration counter setting can be
called up on the display of the scales and compared to the data given on the calibration
label mark (applies only for calibrated products). If the values are identical, the scales are
calibrated; whereas differing values match the situation of a broken calibration seal. Each
completed recalibration procedure is registered by the calibration counter, i.e. the number is
automatically incremented by 1.

Recalibrating the scales

Before the scales can be recalibrated, they must be switched to the calibration mode:

To do so, switch on the scales using the appropriate control. While doing so, simultaneously
press another control key (for example, the kg/lbs key). This causes the contents of the
calibration counter (i.e. the number of calibration procedures carried out so far) to be
displayed for five seconds (flashing).
During the 5 seconds the contents is displayed, press the kg/lbs key again and keep it
depressed (for more than 1.5 seconds) to switch the scales to the calibration mode.
If the kg/lbs key is not pressed within these 5 seconds, the scales are automatically
switched back to normal weighing operation.
When switched to the calibration mode, the scales first are in a decrementing state. This
state is indicated by a flashing "dec" that alternates with the currently measured weight.

Now place a test weight onto the scales. This test weight should have a weight of at least
25% of the maximum permissible load for the weight (we recommend a weight of approx.
66-75%). The weight shown on the display must match the test weight; otherwise, the
scales are maladjusted and the recalibration procedure must carried out in full length. To do
so, change the weight shown on the display using the kg/lbs key until it matches the test
weight.
If the value shown on the display differs from the test weight (if not, recalibration is not
required), estimate whether the required nominal weight is easier to reach by decrementing
or by incrementing. To toggle from the decrementing mode to the incrementing mode or
vice versa, press the kg/lbs key for more than 1.5 seconds (display indicates dec or inc).

Pressing the kg/lbs key for less than 1.5 seconds causes the weight shown on the display
to be increased or decreased by 10 g (depending on the mode currently selected). As the
resolution of the display is lower, the displayed value will not necessarily be increased or
decreased each time the kg/lbs key is pressed. Repeat the above procedure until the
displayed weight and the test weight match. Set the scales to the middle between two
division values by additionally incrementing or decrementing the value by n=d/(2*10). The
calibration process can now be completed by pressing the kg/lbs key for at least five
seconds. The scales compute and store a new linearity coefficient and will then be switched
off automatically. The scales are now calibrated. Remove the test weight.

Note:
To prevent improper calibration by improper use, a timeout control has been implemented
in the calibration mode, i.e. the time that passes until the next key is pressed must never
exceed five seconds.

However, this timeout control is only active for the phase when switching to the calibration
mode.
If, during this phase, 5 seconds have passed and no key has been pressed, the scales are
automatically restored to the weighing mode so that the procedure must be repeated.

To reduce calibration errors to a minimum, recalibration is only possible using a test weight
of more than 25% and less than 100% of the max. load; otherwise, “Er:0:15” will appear
on the display.

If the scales need to be set to a different GAL value, the displayed value must be matched
to the test weight value adapted to the GAL value correction.

Example of a recalibration procedure:

The selected test weight is 100 kg.

The current weight shown on the display is 99.7 kg (max. difference of 300 g).
In this example, you must switch the scales to the incrementing mode to carry out the
recalibration procedure. After the kg/lbs key has been pressed (for more than 1.5 seconds),
a flashing "inc" is shown.
Now increase the value by the first 10 g (by briefly pressing the kg/lbs key). After this has
been done thirty times, the value 100.0 (rounded!) appears on the display although the
internal measured value still is 99.95 kg (not rounded!).
To correct this rounding error, increase the value by another 10 g to get exactly 100.00 as
the calculated value.
Terminate the recalibration procedure as described above.
