Should We Really Support President Duterte?

Good morning, everyone. Before I start, I have a question to ask you, who here
supports President Duterte? Well, today, I will tell or show you that not all of President
Duterte’s plans are good for the future of the Philippines.

First of all, who is President Duterte? President Duterte is a Filipino politician and
the current president of the Philippines. He started his presidential term on June 30,
2016. He has a lot of plans for the Philippines. He implemented a curfew for children
wandering around alone at night. He banned alcoholic drinks in public places to be
served past midnight and stopped people from singing karaoke in public late at night.
He is implementing federalism to stop poverty and to end Muslim and communist
rebellion. He also wants a friendly relationship with China! These things I have
mentioned are some things that President Duterte planned out, but one of the most
famous on-going plans he has promised is the ‘War on Drugs’ campaign. I will be
focusing more on the War on Drugs campaign because this plan of his has the most
problems.

Okay, let us start discussing Duterte’s War on Drugs campaign. He implemented

this because he did not want the Philippines to become a narcotic state. He just
concluded that the Philippines was becoming one. This campaign led to a lot of people
being imprisoned, as well as a lot of citizens being killed. Killing, or extrajudicial killing,
is a kind of punishment that the security or the government usually use against rebels or
drug users. This is where the problem is. Extrajudicial killing is killing a person by
governmental authorities without the sanction of any judicial proceeding or legal
process. First of all, extrajudicial killing is against the law and anyone that is part of the
government can be accused of murder if there is enough evidence. Extrajudicial killing
is even being used on children and teenagers! We should not consider extrajudicial
killing as some sort of punishment. Yes, there are some cases that killing that person is
already necessary, but it states in The Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines
Article III, Section 1, “No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due
process of law, nor shall any person be denied the equal protection of the laws.”
Extrajudicial killings take away all of human’s basic rights. They are being killed without
being put to court. This is where I do not agree with the policy of President Duterte.
Drug addiction should be treated as a health and psychological issue. It is not a crime
per se. Drug addicts should be treated according to stabiles procedures, including
psychological and spiritual remedy. It cannot be treated with fear and killing because I
believe that violence begets violence. The second problem with the War on Drugs
campaign is that it is very selective. Rich Filipinos who are being accused of being a
drug user undergo legal proceedings in court, while poor Filipino drug users are
instantly being killed without being in court. Chinese, Russians, and rich Filipinos who
are put to prison have a comfortable place to stay, while poor Filipinos have a very

pitiful and crowded place to stay. A criminal is a criminal and they should all be treated
equally.

Anyway, these are the things that I think are not correct with President Duterte’s
policies. The government should establish on righteousness and not going down to the
level of criminals. That is all, thank you.
