Research Design Used
The researcher use quantitative social research which refers to
systematic empirical investigation of any phenomena via statistical, mathematical
computational techniques. The design entails the collection and use of data
systematically from given population to describe certain characteristics features of
the population.
The EPOCH measure of adolescent well-being adapts the model for
adolescents, capturing five positive characteristics that we believe promotes
flourishing: engagement, perseverance, optimism, connectedness, and happiness.

Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction
Adolescence is considered as the most crucial stage in every individual’s life since it
is where the transition from childhood to adulthood happens. The period of adolescence is
where they moved beyond from what they were able to organize by putting together all
elements to create a whole new identity as well as establishing their well-being as part of the
identity formation process. They need to go through a lot of changes from different aspects;
physically, psychologically, and socially.
Since this stage is the major age of change, teens tend to discover a lot of atypical
things from the same age group and that leads to curiosity. It is a vulnerable time where
adolescents need to be guided more despite of knowing this stage as time of developing
independence. But this was also the period when parents are having a hard time reaching out
to their teenage child due to their behavioural issues.
Ungratified needs during this period can lead to unhealthy habits that can be a bigger
problem in their adult years. Exploration on sexual activities and preferences marks the
growth on all of the three aspects mentioned a while ago. In connection with this, as one of
the most sensitive societal issue we’ve been facing – early pregnancy. It is one of those timely
and serious issues not only in the Philippines but also globally.
Teenage pregnancy refers to unplanned and unintentional pregnancy during the early
stage of adolescents which was rooted by practicing pre-marital sex and was done out of
curiosity. This issue wasn’t only concerned in the readiness of the mother to bear a child but
also concerned in the well-being of a teenage mother and was extended to her unborn child.
(Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi)
The researchers, as a social work student and as part of the profession, which includes
touching lives of the people, they were very concerned of this major societal issue that this

must not be ignored and must be attended immediately since the people involved are the
main component of the community itself. This research was made to educate adolescents the
importance of their well-being in relation of having early pregnancy.

The rate of early marriage is higher in rural regions than it is

in urbanized areas. Fertility rates in South Asia range from71 to 119 births a trend towards
increasing age at marriage for both sexes. In South Korea and Singapore, although the
occurrence of sexual intercourse before marriage has risen, rates of adolescent childbearing
are low at 4 to 8 per 1000.

The rate of early marriage and pregnancy has decreased sharply in Indonesia;
however, it remains high in comparison to the rest of Asia. Surveys from Thailand have
found that a significant minority of unmarried adolescents are sexually active. Although
premarital sex is considered normal behaviour for males, particularly with prostitutes, it is
not always regarded as such for females. Most Thai youth reported that their first sexual
experience, whether within or outside of marriage, was without contraception.

to hospitals in Thailand for complications of induced abortion are students. The Thai
government has undertaken measures to inform the nation's youth about the prevention
of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancy.

According to the World Health Organization, in several Asian countries

including Bangladesh and Indonesia, a large Proportion of deaths among female adolescents
can be attributed to maternal causes. In cases of unplanned teenage pregnancy, it’s
important to carefully consider that there is some increase risk associated with a
teen pregnancy and it isn’t easy preparing for such a huge life change, So, sex
education, birth control and abstinence are some ways of helping your young
ones, for them prevent an early teen pregnancy, make them realize the value of
self-respect as well as self-control.

Prepare them while looking forward with a positive insight towards a happy
married life in the right time at the right place.

Teenage pregnancy has been an issue on the radar of many government social programs for
decades. Studies have shown that the risks associated with pregnancy for both mother and
child are significantly higher than of the risks of older women and their children.

Complications during pregnancy and birth are among the main reasons why young girls and
women die in developing countries, according to UNFPA. Girls bellow under age are
physically unfit for pregnancies, Miscarriages are more likely, and infant mortality rates are
higher than is the case for adult women. Transfer to chapter 2.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Teenage had been worldwide issue and common problem in our country. The
Philippine is belonging to the list of overpopulated countries. The country Philippine is one
of a country that belong to the Highest Population of Teenage Pregnancy. In our study we are
conducted Survey in barangay bagumbayan, one out of every young women there age 15 to
19 is already a mother or pregnant with her first child.

This societal issue was often to associated with social development issues such as
lack of sufficient education and poverty. This often results to single parenthood which hardly
conditions that give the mothers to become irresponsible.

The major causes of teenage pregnancies are limited access to sexual education and
sexual health services. This is adverse to the church teachings’ alternative methods of family
planning. New technology is also considered as one of the major culprits to the
increased number of teenage pregnancy cases. Occasionally, teenagers get hooked to
different social networking sites such as Facebook, Online Dating, Instagram, etc. using
their smart phones, notebooks and tablets. Due to easy access to new technology and
the curiosity of teenagers to engage in sexual activities without appropriate knowledge
about family planning and contraception, it often ends up with unplanned pregnancy.

Research locale

Bagumbayan is a barangay in the city of Taguig. Its population as determined by the 2015
Census was 40,685. This represented 5.05% of the total population of Taguig.

History
During the Spanish Colonial Era, Bagumbayan was filled with forests. No one was brave
enough to settle here save for the families Tanyag and Garcia, both of which came from the
village of Tipas. Once they settled there, the Spanish Government established it as a barangay of
Taguig. Because it was recently founded, it was named Bagong Bayan (New Town), and
shortened to Bagumbayan. Its first cabeza de barangay (barangay head) was Cererina San Juan,
and the primary jobs of the people then were fishing and farming. The next people to occupy the
position of barangay head before the American Colonial Period were Tandoy Sta. Teresa, Lelay
Sta. Teresa, and Cepruto Marcelo.

During the time of the Americans and the Japanese in the Philippines, Laureano Garcia became
the barangay's head and was followed by Victor Padsisihan, Segundo Magundayao, Arturo
Tanyag, Francisco Javier, and Nicanor Garcia. Though it was the latest town that was founded
then, the citizens of Taguig trusted the following people to be its councilors: Elino Cruz, Benito
Garcia, Cerilo P. Santos, Arsenio Javier, Jose Aquino, Francisco dela Rosa, Francisco Tortosa,
Claudio Marcelo and Rufino Dacumos.

In 1958, the barangay was nicknamed "Sleeping Town" because the livelihood of its people
advanced slowly. However, later in 1959, their livelihood was stimulated because the value of
the land in the area that was normally exposed or used for agriculture suddenly increased.
Because of this, the government ordered the construction of what was then called the South
Superhighway, leading to an increase in land purchases by corporations. From there,
Bagumbayan developed into the barangay it is now.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related literature
Global context
Teenage pregnancies and teenage motherhood are a cause for concern worldwide.
From a historical point of view, teenage pregnancies are nothing new. For much of
human history, it was absolutely common that girls married during their late
adolescence and experienced first birth during their second decade of life. This kind
of reproductive behavior was socially desired and considered as normal. Nowadays,
however, the prevention of teenage pregnancies and teenage motherhood is a priority
for public health in nearly all developed and increasingly in developing countries. For
a long time, teenage pregnancies were associated with severe medical problems;
however, most of data supporting this viewpoint have been collected some decades
ago and reflect mainly the situation of per se socially disadvantaged teenage mothers.
According to more recent studies, teenage pregnancies are not per se risky ones. A
clear risk group are extremely young teenage mothers (younger than 15 years) who
are confronted with various medical risks, such as preeclampsia, preterm labor, and
small for gestational age newborns but also marked social disadvantage, such as
poverty, unemployment, low educational level, and single parenting.

Asian context
South Asia has a large proportion of young people in the world and teenage
pregnancy has emerged as one of the major public health problem among them. The
objective of this study is to systematically review to identify the risk factors
associated with teenage pregnancy in South Asian countries.
Out of the seven countries in South Asia, most of the studies were related to Nepal,
Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. Socio-economic factors, low educational
attainment, cultural and family structure were all consistently identified as risk factors

for teenage pregnancy. Majority of teenage girls are reported with basic knowledge
on sexual health however, very few of them have used the knowledge into practice.

Local literature
From 2000 to 2010, the number of live births by teenage mothers in the Philippines
rose by more than 60 percent, latest data from the National Statistics Office showed.
Another alarming fact is that the number of teenage mothers who gave birth to their
second or third child during their teenage year has increased in the last 10 years. This
is according to the data shown in the press conference in Quezon City by Carmelita
Ericta, administrator and civil registrar general of the National Statistics Office.

RELATED STUDIES
Local Studies
Young, poor and pregnant-- this is the situation of most adolescent mums in the Philippines.
While teenage pregnancies in Southeast Asia are declining, in the Philippines, its on the rise.
Every hour, 24 babies are born to mothers who are children as well- some as young as 10
years old.

In Happyland, Tondo, stories of very young girls getting pregnant or becoming mothers are
commonplace. They are often impregnated by men who are much older, lured into intimacy
by offers of food or allowance for school. Here, "Angel", a 13 year old girl struggles to
survive, sleeping on bike carts parked on a trash-laden road while heavily pregnant at 7
months from her 17 year old boyfriend whom she calls "asawa" or husband. They live as
husband and wife, but without a home and only picking trash for a living, their future and
that of their unborn child remain uncertain.

Her friend “Andrea”, also 13 years old, is now living with her boyfriend’s family in a shanty
in Happyland. She got impregnated at 12 but she lost her baby on her 7th month of
pregnancy. “Andrea” says she has nowhere to go, her mother has no home and her father is
in prison. Although her living conditions are far from comfortable, she says at least with her
22 year-old boyfriend, she is fed three times a day. Asked what she misses the most about
being a child, she answers, “I miss playing”.

Meanwhile, in Fabella Hospital, the busiest maternity hospital in the world, 15 year old
“Ann” gives birth to a baby girl. Doctors here say, they perform more than a thousand
deliveries on adolescent girls like her every year. Witnessing childbirth is difficult, more so if
the mother is not more than a child herself. But “Ann” seems to be destined to become a
teenage mother as this is her second pregnancy, the first one ending in a miscarriage.

Foreign Studies
In Ecuador about 2,080 out of the total 346,700 females of ages 10 to 14 years in 2010 had
already experienced motherhood (INEC, 2010). Beyond improving adolescent and young
people lives, investing in adolescent sexual and reproductive health will contribute to broader
development goals in the future. According to UNICEF, WHO and UNFPA ‘‘Pregnancy and
childbirth-related deaths are the number one killers of 15 - 19 year old girls worldwide. Each
year, nearly 70,000 die. At least 2 million more are left with chronic illness or disabilities
that may bring them life-long suffering, shame, and abandonment.
Consequently, UNFPA has decided to assign World Population Day 2013 teen pregnancy as
a global priority. It emphasizes the importance of promoting actions towards teen pregnancy
prevention with the objective of giving adolescents and young people enough opportunities
and capabilities to replicate the patterns in their future lives. It was only one decade and a
half ago that adolescents were brought into the national agendas and the focus was placed on
the importance of promoting actions with adolescents. By emphasizing on their sexual and
reproductive rights, some of the root causes for pregnancy will break at this age group such
as poverty, gender disparities, violence and lack of education. It was in 1994 in the
International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo that 179 countries
embraced the concept and practice of sexual and reproductive rights as a necessary factor for
poverty reduction as well as for the reduction of high fertility and mortality rate and HIV and
AIDS prevalence (McIntosh and Finkle, 1995). Many efforts have been made in the world
after ICPD but including sexual and reproductive rights in the political agendas is not
enough. There have to be an ensemble of elements that must be joint together in a set of
policies and actions as well as education and information. Furthermore, good quality of

sexual and reproductive health services must be available in order for adolescents to take
risk-free choices and healthy decisions when related to their sexual life.
Adolescence marks an important phase in human beings development. During this stage of
all the physical, physiological and emotional changes are happening, as well as the sexual
interests and arousal emerge as the body also faces its most drastic changes. It is consider a
moment where adolescents are building their personalities and their new gendered sexual
relationships with others (Dixon-Muller, 2007). Consequently, as adolescents are going
through a process of transformation, they face various risks as well. First, because their
reproductive and immune systems are biologically immature and therefore more vulnerable
for STIs3 and HIV transmission; in case a pregnancy happens, their bodies are exposed to
more problems than adult women. Moreover, there are social factors such as relations of
power that can influence girls and adolescents to become sexually active without knowing
the risks or even become victims of sexual abuse or submission.
Early marriage and teenage pregnancy are the two most common causes for adolescents’
school dropout in Ecuador. Women who have not finished their education have less
opportunities of future labour and less income compared to educated women.
This analysis has focused on 2 key socio-cultural elements that affect teenage pregnancy as a
development problematic: education and gender structures. The lack or inequities related to
these 2 aspects increments the probabilities of an unwanted or mistimed pregnancy in early
ages during adolescence. Becoming mothers when adolescents per se is not an unsolved
problem, but could be when becoming an adolescent mother would limit the mother of
accessing a quality education and health services consequence of discrimination and stigma
due early motherhood.
Having access to an appropriate education will give girls and adolescent’s not only the
freedom to choose and take decisions based on their rights, but make pregnancy a conscious
decisions which will inevitable have an impact over their future plans. These decisions
should be based on relevant information and accessibility and good quality of educative and
health services, but overall to equity in all the environments they will interact in a near future
taking conscious and free decisions over their bodies and minds.

Theoretical Framework
Identity versus confusion theory is the fifth stage of ego according to Psychologist
Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development. This stage occurs during adolescence at
the age of 12 to 18. During this stage, adolescents explore the independence and develop a
sense of self.
Ego Identity is one of the elements of Erickson’s psychosocial stage theory is the
development of ego Identity. It is the conscious sense of self that develops through social
interaction, so in relation to Teenage pregnancy this theory state that in adolescence stage,
the adolescent is sensitive and curious in many things especially if the topic is sex, because
of curiosity of the adolescence the result is early pregnancy.

Conceptual Framework
This was designed to give the readers a brief idea on how this study works through
various processes. Further, this framework helps the readers to know the variables that may
influence or affect another variable in this study. The researchers attempt to find out the
effects of early pregnancy on the well-being of adolescents and to know if there is a
significant relationship between the two.
