Is the Philippines really a collectivist society?

Give examples, and if true, how does this shape/impact our

idea of self.

Philippines is known for being a diversified and colorful country. Aside from having thousand of islands,
it has various languages and different kinds of cultures and traditions. Notwithstanding, the unity and
compassion Filipinos have is evident which made the country a collectivist one. Philippine has a
democratic type of government. It clearly shows how Filipinos move together as one. The country values
the rights and freedom of it’s people by upholding public welfare. Filipino has this trait of what we called
“bayanihan” or brotherhood. We care for each other and treat them as a family, especially in times of
calamity, you will see the heart full of compassion and loyalty. They think not only for their own sake,
but also for other people around them. Filipinos also treasure the strong relationships they have with
their family and extended loved ones. The long-term commitment they have shows how loyal and loving
they are. Being collectivist of the Philippines affects the life of every Filipino and unconsciously gave
impact on their own self.

The self of one is not shapes by the himself alone, it is being influenced by the things around him. Every
norms, rules, rights, and culture of the place he lives in affects the way he think and move.
