Homework #9

Question #1

You arrived to the theater and find the following equipment set for the performance of this evening. The
circuit of the existing system is the following:

The nominal values of the incandescent lamps connected to the dimmer are: L1 (120 V, 2400 W), L2 (120
V 1200 W) and L3 (120 V 1200 W).

The dimmer provides an Output Voltage

Vout = Vin x sin(alpha/2)

meaning when alpha is 0° then Vout is 0 Volt and when alpha is 180° then Vout = Vin = 120 Volts.

1.1) You arrive to the theater and turn on the dimmer to alpha = 100% (meaning 180°). Will the system
work properly? Yes/No – Justify your answer with your calculations
1.2) If the system cannot work properly with alpha = 100% = 180°, and you do not have time to make the
pertinent changes, please calculate the maximum alpha you can rise the dimmer before the
breakers stop the lights to work. Assume that the resistances of the lamps are constant and do not
change with the temperature)
1.3) You need to remove lamps to ensure that if you use the dimmer at 100% the breaker will not open
the circuit, but also to ensure that the stage receives the maximum of light. Decide which lamp/s
you will remove and justify it with your calculations
Question #2

Given the following system

Isytem

2.1) In the system presented above, calculate the minimum value of the Imax of the breaker marked
Imax= ?? to ensure that the two channels will work at the maximum of their capacity.

2.2) You have at your disposal lamps which nominal value are 120Volts and the nominal power are
multiple of 300 Watts (e.g. 300W, 600W, 900W, 1200W, etc.). Select the lamps L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5 that
will ensure that the two channels Ch1 (Channel 1), and Ch2 (Channel 2) are working at the maximum of
their capacity. Justify your selection with your calculations.

2.3) Using the following lamps: L1=L2=L3 (120V, 1200W) and L4=L5 (120V 1800W), and assuming that
the resistances of the lamps do not change with the temperature, calculate the current of the system
Isystem when Vout Ch1 = 60 Volts and Vout Ch2 = 90 Volts

2.4) Using the lamps you selected, and assuming that the resistances of the lamps do not change with
the temperature, calculate the Voltage of the Channel 2 Vout Ch2, that will ensure that when Vout Ch1
= 75Volts, the current of the system Isystem will be 40 Amperes
Question #3

You have to your disposal the following lamps

4 lamps L1: L1a, L1b, L1c, L1d (60 V, 300 Watts), 2 lamps L2: L2a, L2b (120 V, 1200 Watts), 2 lamps L3:
L3a, L3b (120 V, 600 Watts) and 6 lamps L4: L4a, L4b, L4c, L4d, L4e, L4f (120 V, 120 Watts)

The lamps have being especially designed to work following the Ohm law, therefore their resistance will
be constant (will not change with the temperature)

3.1) Calculate the resistance of each lamps

You have a dimmer with three output channels (Channel #1, Channel #2 and Channel #3) which allows
the voltage to change from 0V to 120V, with a maximum current of 16 amp. each. You need to connect
the lamps at your disposal, in the way that the three channels will work at their maximum load (16
amp.) without the possibility to go over the maximum current.

3.2) Is it possible to use all the lamps you have at your disposal? Please answer Yes or No with your
justification.

3.3) Select the lamps and draw the circuits of the lamps connected to each one of the output channels
that will take maximum of 16 amp from each output when the output produces 120 V

3.4) Calculate the Power and the Current for each channel when the dimmer is providing 100% of the
output (120 V) in each channel. Justify your answers with the calculations – No justification – No Points

3.5) The setup of the dimmer for the scene you want to light, required that with the lamps you chose for
each output channel, Voltage Channel #1 will be 50% ( ½ ), Voltage Channel #2 will be at 66.6% (2/3)
and Voltage Channel #3 will be at 83.3% (5/6). Calculate the Voltage, Current and Power for each
channel, the total power and current needed for the dimmer to work. The dimmer is connected to a
power source of 120V, 10 KWatts
Question #4

You have to your disposal multiple lamps in stock with the nominal values: L1 (60 V, 300 Watts), L2 (120
V, 1200 Watts), L3 (120 V, 600 Watts) and L4 (120 V, 120 Watts).

After testing the lamps the manufacturer states that the resistance of the lamp is proportional to the
voltage applied to the lamp as shown in the expression below

Rlamp = R(0 Volt) + 0.1 (ohm/Volt) * V

Where Rlamp is the value of the resistance of the lamp at any applied voltage, R(0 Volt) is the resistance
of the lamp when no voltage is applied, and V is the voltage applied to the lamp

4.1) Find the resistance of each one of the lamps when applied 50% of the nominal voltage

You have a dimmer with three output channels (Channel #1, Channel #2 and Channel #3) which allows
the voltage to change from 0V to 120V, with a maximum current of 30 amp. each. You need to select
and connect lamps from the available stock, in the way that the three channels will work at their
maximum load (30 amp.) without the possibility to go over the maximum current.

4.2) Select the lamps and draw the circuits of the lamps connected to each one of the output
channels that will take exactly 30 amp from each output when the output produces 120

4.3) What is the minimum current and power the outlet where the dimmer is connected need to
provide to ensure that the lighting system will work properly? Justify your answer.

4.4) Calculate the Power and the Current for each channel when the dimmer is providing 100% of
the output (120 V) in each channel. Justify your answers with the calculations – No justification – No
Points

4.5) The setup of the dimmer for the scene you want to light, required that with the lamps you
chose for each output channel, Channel #1 will be 50% ( ½ ), Channel #2 will be at 66.6% (2/3) and
Channel #3 will be at 83.3% (5/6). Calculate the Voltage, Current and Power for each channel, the
total power and current needed for the dimmer to work.
