Assignment 1 - Pointwise and Uniform Convergence of Functions

29 October 2019

1. Investigate the convergence of the sequence (xn ) in each of the following

cases:
1 2 n
(a) xn = 1+n2 + 1+n2 +.....+ 1+n2
1
(b) xn = (an + bn ) n where 0<a<b
√ 1 √ 1 √ 1
(c) xn = ( 2 − 2 3 )( 2 − 2 5 ).....( 2 − 2 2n+1 )
(d) xn = nα − (n + 1)α f or some α ∈ (0, 1)
(e) xn = 2n /n!
1−2+3−4+...+(−1)n−1 n
(f) xn = n

2. Let {fn } be the sequence of functions on R defined by fn (x) = nx. Com-

ment on the convergence of this sequence on R.
3. Consider the sequence {fn } of functions defined by

nx+x2
fn (x) = n2 f or all x in R

Show that fn converges pointwise.

4. Let {fn } be the sequence of functions defined by by fn (x) = cosn (x)f or

−π π
2 ≤ x ≤ 2 . Discuss the pointwise convergence of the sequence.

5. Consider the sequence of functions defined by

fn (x) = nx(1 − x)n on [0,1].

Show that {fn } converges pointwise to the zero function.

6. Let {fn } be the sequence of functions on R defined by
(
1
n3 for 0 < x ≤ n
fn (x) =
1 otherwise

Show that {fn } converges pointwise to the constant function f = 1 on R.

7. Let {fn } be the sequence of functions on (0,∞) defined by

nx
fn (x) = 1+n2 x2

Show that {fn } is pointwise convergent and determine its poitwise limit.

f(x).
(b) Decide if fn →
− f uniformly on [0,1]. Prove your answer.
(c) Decide if fn →
− f uniformly on [1, ∞). Prove your answer.

converges uniformly on E.

11. Construct sequences {fn },{gn } which converge uniformly on some set E,
but such that {fn gn } →
− h for some function h but not uniformly.
12. Consider a sequence of functions {fn } defined as

fn (x) = nx(1 − x2 )n on [0,1]
