Abstract

Graphic design, also known as communication design, is the art and practice of planning

and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content. The form it takes can be

physical or virtual and can include images, words, or graphics. The experience can take place in

an instant or over a long period of time. The work can happen at any scale, from the design of a

single postage stamp to a national postal signage system. It can be intended for a small number

of people, such as a one-off or limited-edition book or exhibition design, or can be seen by

millions, as with the interlinked digital and physical content of an international news

organization. It can also be for any purpose, whether commercial, educational, cultural, or

political.

This is a research paper with information gathered for the researcher’s guidance in

pursuing her dream career. The research paper includes the courses that can be taken by the

researcher in connection with Graphic Design/Arts, and the universities well fit for anyone who

wants to pursue a degree in Graphic Design. This also will show the range of salary a beginner to

an advanced Graphic Designer usually amount to. The paper contains guidance on the usual

lifestyle and opportunities present for a Graphic Designer, the things to do in becoming and

being a Graphic Designer, and the challenges to face while pursuing the said career.

Introduction

Graphic Design made a boom in the society where the use of design as a strategic

technique to attract consumers or attention on particular topics or items, are used. By the year

2018, the demand of Graphic Designers will go up to 13% in areas such as advertisers and

computer design firms.

The goal of the research is to help the researcher on pursuing her dream career as a

Graphic Designer, where the research contain facts that are from other experienced professionals

and website based data. The researcher have always dreamt of becoming a Graphic Designer

ever since she started to get really involved in Arts. When she was a child, her love and skill for

art developed; She could draw and paint better than most of her family members and friends. It

has become quite an obsession of hers. She got involved in Creative Journaling,

Drawing/Sketching, Painting (acrylic and watercolor), Calligraphy, Interior Design, Grafting,

Crafts, Creative Notes, 2D Art, Typography, and so much more. For a few years her top wishes

for gifts were a Wacom tablet, Gouache, paint brushes, notebooks, sketchbooks, washi tapes, and

stickers. Her eldest sister, Youmi Angkiko, influenced her in the Arts, it was one of their

pastimes and pleasure. They were both amazed in bewildered at the immense types of Art that

they could learn and create.

The researcher had her mind on a few other careers such as a Culinary chef, App and

Game Developer, Veterinarian, Lawyer, and a Singer. Nonetheless, she decided that she wanted

to become a Graphic Designer. To become a Graphic Designer, one must be patient, creative,

adjustable, easily adapting, strong-willed, inspired and most important of all, passionate. It was

3
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

an important aspect for her to be happy while working, she wants to have a job that she loves to

do, that pushes her capabilities, and inspires her to do more. By the data collected and filtered, it

can help and guide the researcher in her pursuit to her dream career.

Scope and Limitations

The research paper is about finding out how our dream career can turn out for us in the

future. In this case, Graphic Design is the main career focus of the research. The courses and

universities that will help become a Graphic Designer; the challenges, salary, positions, and the

demand. The research will be based on reliable sources on the internet and as well as answers

from real professionals via a survey conducted by the researcher.

The estimated time range of the research, from the choosing of career to the final results

from data research and surveys, ranges from 4 - 7 weeks depending on the response time of the

respondents.

The study is only limited to what the internet can answer and what the respondents will

answer, it does not entirely represent the information of Graphic Design, and the pros and cons

of it being a career. Its limitations are those events, things, etc. that are outside of the scope of

this study.

Review of Related Literature

The Courses

According to the respondents, the most common answer of courses to take in college to

become or pursue the career of a Graphic Designer is to take Multimedia Arts, or Visual

Communications. The courses mentioned are courses that will teach and enhance the student's

capabilities and talent when it comes to designing and creating digitally.

Multimedia Arts or the Multimedia arts programs focus on the innovation and technology

associated with the study of new media. Students are trained to design and create new media

projects spanning print, web, animation and film. They also acquire a foundation in the visual

arts, critical theory and computer science. Aspiring professionals also investigate the

convergence of art and technology.

The key thing to remember about graphic design, especially when compared to visual

communication, is that it’s a narrow, highly specialized field that focuses only on the creation of

key graphics for a broader advertising campaign, website, or print materials. Graphic designers

do not come with the broad set of skills that covers everything from animation to photography,

nor do they produce a completely finished, visual product for clients. Instead, they focus on

creating key graphical elements that fit within a broader visual communication process. Graphic

designers typically learn a larger number of key computer applications, and they learn how to fit

their graphics into websites, print media, digital and print ads, and broader marketing efforts.

5
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

They’ll also learn the intricacies of color selection, communications team collaboration, and new

file formats that make images smaller in file size and more portable overall. These skills will

scale well as graphic design standards and best practices change over time, and will set up

graphic design graduates as key, expert advisers to visual communicators without a specialized

skill set in this particular field.

Meanwhile, a major in Visual Communication Design educates and prepares students to

conceive and produce creative solutions to satisfy the visual communication needs of society.

Graduates are prepared for careers in graphic design, web design, multimedia design,

advertising, printing, publishing or related fields. Theory and practice are covered in a variety of

contexts, including process and product, form and content, type and image and interactivity.

Current technology and future trends are addressed in the context of industry practices. This

major is combined with a related minor in another academic area to specialize in specific career

preparation.

The visual communication field is focused on communicating with clients and customers through

any visual means available. That means students will learn graphic design, illustration,

animation, photography, and even the modification, or airbrushing of photographs to better

illustrate a given point. These skills are considered broad and comprehensive, and they prepare

graduates to enter a number of exciting fields within the communications industry. Available

career paths include graphic design, professional photography or retouching, illustration and

professional animation, advertising, website design, and visual marketing departments.

6
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

Students in a visual communication program are generally either encouraged or required

to choose an area of concentration, which can help them target their skills more broadly.

Concentrations do include graphic design, but also include digital animation, professional digital

photography, animation, computer illustration, mixed visual media, and advertising.

The key difference of both courses are of its own focus. Multimedia Arts teaches the

students to the ways of designing for visual presentations like web design. Visual

Communication on the other hand, focuses on the way advertising and marketing works through

design and it’s art.

Visual communicators focus on a large number of different methods to get their point

across: Photography, digital design, unique illustrations, presentations, and even animations, all

fall under their large umbrella of training and expertise. While visual communications are more

broadly trained, graphic designers are not. Their focus is narrowly limited to the design and

development of key graphics for insertion into digital and print media, websites, mobile apps,

and more. Together, however, these two types of professionals make it easier to communicate a

company’s key points and marketing efforts in a way that is bright, vivid, and graphically

appealing, no matter the type of media being used.

Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

The Universities

According to the respondents, it is still evident that a lot of companies look at the names

of universities written on a hiree’s resume, if the hiree came from one of the prestigious

universities, the more chance of getting hired which is very biased but still happening today.

As for universities the researcher could apply to, the best options are:

● De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde - is a private catholic college in Malate

district of Manila, Philippines. There are 3 campuses, one is along Taft Avenue,

with two campuses along Pablo Ocampo Street and Arellano Avenue. The college

is a member institution of De La Salle Philippines, a network of 17 schools under

the De La Salle Brothers Philippine District.

● Mapúa Institute of Technology - (MU, formerly known as Mapúa Institute of

Technology) is a non-sectarian, research-oriented, Filipino university located in

Intramuros, Manila and in Makati. Mapua University is a source of architects,

engineers, and science graduates in the architectural and engineering fieldsas

Mapúa University specializes in these fields in the undergraduate and graduate

levels, aside from its widening range of undergraduate programs such as

psychology, computer science, digital cinema, multimedia arts and sciences,

technical communication, information technology, accounting, entrepreneurship,

business management, hotel and restaurant management, and nursing.

8
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

● iAcademy - Information and Communications Technology Academy, better

known as iAcademy (stylized as iACADEMY) is a private, non-sectarian

educational institution in the Philippines. The school offers specialized programs

in Computing, Business, and Design, which are geared towards preparing students

for a highly competitive professional world. Its campus is located in the Central

Business District of Makati City.

● De La Salle University - De La Salle University is a Roman Catholic, Lasallian

research university located in Taft Avenue, Malate, Manila, Philippines. It was

established in 1911 by De La Salle Brothers as the De La Salle College in

Nozaleda Street, Paco, Manila with Br. Blimond Pierre FSC serving as its first

director. The educational institution moved to its present location on September

21 to facilitate the increase in enrollment. The university started as a boys'

elementary and high school. In 1920 it began offering a two-year Associate in

Arts Commerce program, which was later discontinued in 1931 in favour of a

Bachelor of Science in Commerce programme. DLSU currently offers

coeducational undergraduate and graduate degree programmes through its seven

colleges and one school specializing in varied disciplines, including business,

engineering and liberal arts.

● Asia Pacific College - Asia Pacific College (APC) was established in 1991 as a

non-profit joint venture between IBM Philippines and the SM Foundation. It was

envisioned as a learning institution that produces graduates who fulfill

information technology industry demands.Asia Pacific College emphasizes

9
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

industry-academe links, orienting their programs and faculty toward industry

needs. APC's cornerstones are its IT curriculum, industry-experienced faculty and

its six-month internship program. Asia Pacific College is one of the four Centers

of Excellence in IT Education in the Philippines.

● University of Santo Tomas - The Pontifical and Royal University of Santo

Tomas, The Catholic University of the Philippines, or simply the University of

Santo Tomas (UST), is a private, Roman Catholic research university in Manila,

Philippines. Founded on 28 April 1611 by Miguel de Benavides, Archbishop of

Manila, it has the oldest extant university charter in the Philippines and in Asia,

and is one of the world's largest Catholic universities in terms of enrollment found

on one campus. The university is run by the Order of Preachers. UST is the only

university to have been visited by three popes four times: once by Pope Paul VI

on 28 November 1970, twice by Pope John Paul II on 18 February 1981 and 13

January 1995, and once by Pope Francis on 18 January 2015.

All of the universities mentioned above offers Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Arts and

only a few offer Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communications. Although both course is similar,

the school may also be a factor in the employment process once a student graduate with any of

the courses. All of the universities mentioned above are also award holders and are recognized

for their advanced teaching and state-of-the-art facilities, example, iAcademy is recognized by

Wacom Co., Ltd. which is a company that manufactures and sells tablet components for tablet to

screen sketching, painting, writing, or drawing.

The Starting Point

The Possibilities of Occupations: Private Companies and the Government

The occupations that the researcher was advised to take were examples of the

respondents own occupation as well as from other sources. Although most Graphic Designers

attain to work in a private company, some work for government like SSS, GSIS, MIAA, and so

on. These government branches hire Graphic Designers or Multimedia Arts graduates to create

their advertisements, brochures, tarpaulins, media images, announcements, etc. Graphic

Designers can also work for government officials who are in need of campaign advertisements.

Digital Marketer

A Digital Marketer’s job is to create advertisements and marketing strategies to use

digitally. Companies who provide products or services are the common employers of the said

occupation. Digital marketers monitor things like what is being viewed, how often and for how

long, sales conversions, what content works and doesn’t work, etc. While the Internet is, perhaps,

the channel most closely associated with digital marketing, others include wireless text

messaging, mobile instant messaging, mobile apps, podcasts, electronic billboards, digital

television and radio channels, etc.

11
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

What is Digital Marketing?

Digital Marketing is the promotion of products or brands via one or more forms of

electronic media, differs from traditional marketing in that it uses channels and methods that

enable an organization to analyze marketing campaigns and understand what is working and

what isn’t – typically in real time.

Graphic Designer

A Graphic Designer is a professional within the graphic design and graphic arts industry

who assembles together images, typography, or motion graphics to create a piece of design. A

graphic designer creates the graphics primarily for published, printed or electronic media, such

as brochures (sometimes) and advertising. They are also sometimes responsible for typesetting,

illustration, user interfaces, and web design. A core responsibility of the designer's job is to

present information in a way that is both accessible and memorable.

What is Graphic Design?

Graphic design is the process of visual communication, and problem-solving through the

correct use of typography, space, image and color. The field is considered a subset of visual

communication and communication design, but sometimes the term "graphic design" is used

interchangeably with these due to overlapping skills involved.

Freelance

12
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

Freelancers are common in Graphic Designers, usually they accept projects that are

proposed from companies or single employers who need their help, alongside a proposition of

pay depending on the difficulty of the project. Often times, Graphics Designers, although

employed accept freelance jobs to earn additional money.

The Challenges of Trying to Get Hired

Quite often, newly graduates look for a job immediately. Looking for a job is one thing

but when trying to get hired is another. When trying to get hired, there are factors that one must

overcome, they are obstacles in a race where the need to excel over other people trying to get

hired from the same company(ies) one is trying to get hired by is imminent.

Here are some examples of common challenges to face when trying to get hired:

The Competition

Think of it as a race or a marathon and the person need to get in the finish line in order to

succeed, but this time, there are obstacle courses that the person need to overcome without being

receiving negative backlash. One has to keep an impressive profile in order to outshine the other

people he/ she are competing against.

Your Skillset

Creativity is not enough in the world of Graphic Designers, one must also be patient,

flexible, and can handle heavy pressure. Patience is a key to finishing the work, the process it

takes to create a project and finish it, then there’s the revision which takes longer especially if it

13
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

requires starting from scratch, again. Flexibility, in the sense that one can adjust themself in the

work , fellow workers, and work area; being unable to adjust can lead to major problems that

will only cause trouble for the person and the person’s career. Lastly, Graphic Designers should

be able to handle heavy pressure put upon them especially since design is an important aspect

considered by consumers or customers, or the people in general who will see the work.

Experience

Often times companies consider the experience of a hiree as a major factor when they

hire. Hiring someone with experience is an advantage to their company since hiring someone

with experience means having someone with knowledge of what actually happens in the field of

work, they may also gain the advantage of having someone more sharpened skills due to the

experience a hiree may have.

Building Up Your Portfolio

Almost similar with experience, building up a portfolio requires one to create the best

believable image of one’s experiences, this is what will be shown to the hirers or the company.

In the case of becoming a Graphic Designer, an Art Portfolio is a must, this will enable the hirer

to see the works of the hiree and decide whether the skills and style of the hiree match to their

need and standards. This is same with photographers who needs to create a fantastic Photography

Portfolio in order to impress their potential customers.

14
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

The Big Dough: Salary for the New Hire

In this case, the usual first-grade salary range of a Graphic Designer according to the

respondents, varies from the lowest offer which is from ₱13,000 - ₱15,000 or ₱20,000 - ₱25,000.

It mostly depends on the skill level of a hiree, and also the additional pay the hiree earns when

she/he does freelance work along with corporate work. According to a site, it states that the

median of the salary a newly hired Graphic Designer may earn is typically around ₱15,000.

Although there is a significant difference in salary where in working for a government office

usually earns less than working in a private company.

The Possibilities of Getting Hired

According to the respondents, the chances of getting hired within a 6-month span is quite

possible for newly graduates of Multimedia Arts who aspire to become Graphic Designers. All

of the respondents got hired a month or so after graduating, which means that people saying that

people who are Multimedia Art graduates have difficulty in finding job opportunities and getting

hired is not true.

15
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

One Foot in The Game

Truth on Being a Graphic Designer

Aspiring to become a Graphic Designer means that an individual should possess the

talent of creativity although this is not always the case for artists. There are other characteristics

that an aspiring Graphic Designer should practice and possess in order to become one. Below

examples are from respondents who are currently working under the said profession.

1. You should never run out of ideas - this is one of the basic factor that should be known

to Graphic Designers. There is such thing as Mental Block which happens to artists of

different variations, where in an artist cannot produce any creation at a moment. Often

times, artists with mental blocks have their own ways of getting ideas to flow again such

as taking showers or long baths, going for a walk or a run, eating or binging, singing or

dancing, napping, visiting parks or museums, watching movies or reading books, etc.

Methods eases the artist’s mind out of strain from creating. Running out of ideas is a bad

thing for Graphic Designers because it constantly requires the ideas especially good ones,

in order to create for the company something that would sell or catch attention.

2. Immense Focus - It is needed that a Graphic Designer should always be focused on the

task at hand, deadlines can be an enemy and without focus, missing deadlines can take a

toll on the person’s work because it may affect the company’s timetable. For example,

when a product company promised to launch a new product to the public on a specific

16
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

date through a huge tarpaulin carried by a blimp and the design depends on the designer,

but since the designer was not focused on the task at hand, the product announcement

was delayed which causes a fuss over the target customers.

3. Fast and Creative Solver - Problems arises for Graphic Designers such as typographical

errors, unintended offensive lines and images, copyright infringement, triggering colors,

unbalanced colors, etc. Companies need to create a solution ASAP in order to avoid

marketing mishaps, these problems require Graphic Designers to come up with solutions

to revise the mishaps and avoid loss of market.

4. Patience - There will come a time when the work will require Graphic Designers to

resolve massive revisions and concept brainstorming which will surely be draining.

Without patience, it will be difficult to tolerate the multiple and unavoidable times that

revisions and brainstormings will happen.

5. Dedication - Showing and applying dedication to the work makes the end product a

hundred times more beautiful and worth the hard work. It shows the heart and

intricateness of the product which shows better results.

17
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

The Life and Level Up

Getting Promoted

Through the years of working as a Graphic Designer, promotions can be reached in the

long run. Promotions are granted when seen to be deserved.

Different types of promotions

● Artist > Illustrator > Director > Content Developer

● Junior Graphic Artist > Senior Graphic Artist > Junior Art Director > Senior Art Director

In order for a Graphic Artist to get promoted, the artist must prove him/herself to the

company, by showing consistent great performance in projects and in other activities, showing

passion in the work they do, having a strong background, and always exhume the mindset of a

leader; these are just some of the ways that an artist can follow to grasp the chance of getting

promoted.

The salary of promoted Graphic Designers are naturally higher than the lower level

employees and the newly hired. However Graphic Designers’ workload increases and becomes

more difficult as they get promoted to higher positions, but it is not always that an artist gets

promoted, it is to be earned as mentioned above.

18
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

Supporting Yourself as a Graphic Designer

According to the respondents, it is possible for an artist to support him/herself if they ever

decide to live on their own or is living on their own. The salary of a Graphic Designer is enough

to pay for monthly expenses such as transportation, rent, food, and other miscellaneous expenses.

It is possible especially if the person is working freelance at the same time.

Opportunities across the Globe

According to the respondents and to job hunting sites on the internet, there is a demand

for Graphics Designers in abroad, a lot of opportunities in Singapore. The differences from

working in the Philippines and some other country abroad is the environment and salary which

then converted to Philippine Peso is bigger in amount than what Graphic Designers usually earn

in the country. The internet is a great way to find advertisements of companies looking for

Graphics Designer to hire and bring abroad, it oftens starts by paying and attending a huge

seminar conducted by the company or recruiter, then they look at the requirements and resume of

the Graphic Designer (usually with experience), once confirmed for acceptance - assist them

with the visa and transportation. Usually a company handles the housing of a Graphic Designer

brought to another country.

Australia, Canada, and Singapore are one of the biggest countries who actively hires

Filipino Graphic Designers and bring them to their country looking for fresh ideas and

perspectives, who can bring another culture and designs to their country.

The Process and Experience

The researcher had to come up with a survey with a minimum of 15 questions consisting

Primary questions which are questions that can only be answered by people with the knowledge

of or relating to the question, and Secondary questions in where the answers can also be found

from other mediums such as the internet or books. The researcher had her questions revised three

22
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

times and had to clarify which was Primary and Secondary since her questions were possibly

both Primary questions and Secondary questions at the same time. When approved by the L.F.

after revisions, the researcher sent an email to the respondents individually, the respondents

should be working in the field of her dream career which means that the respondents should be

working as Graphic Designers. The researcher was the instructed to place her L.F. as a BCC

recipient in the emails to enable the L.F. to monitor and check the emails sent by the researcher

to the respondents, and the responses and inquiries made by the respondents about the survey.

The structure of the researcher’s emails to her respondents:

Good day,

My name is Aira Dianne S. Angkiko, I am the sister of Dona Santiago. I am an 18 years old - grade 11 student

from APEC Schools - Sta. Rita, Parañaque. I am currently studying under Accounting and Business Management.

I would like to ask for a moment of your time to please answer my survey regarding our Milestone (project) in SciTech -

Research 1.

We are tasked to conduct a survey on professionals/experts with or under our dream career, in which mine is to

become a Graphic Designer.

By answering my survey, I am very thankful that you will be able to help me and guide me on deciding on which

steps to take towards my pursuing my dream career.

Below I have attached the link of the survey in google forms format if you wish to continue and answer.

https://goo.gl/forms/UkJmXFAL1rxRmIgo2

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Aira Dianne S. Angkiko

23
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

It took a few days for the respondents to answer because there were complications with

the researcher’s process such as her sister - being the person to provide the contact information

of her respondents - could not relay the information until a few days since the company they

were all working under was in a company team building.

The researcher then received one response, but then the other two respondents were still

not answering after a few days since she sent the email so the researcher tried to contact her idol

and inspiration - Ms. Cajucom or better known with her Instagram handle as @CassyKicks - a

woman who is an employed Graphic Designer but at the same time known for her handmade and

hand-drawn products such as stickers, patches, pins, wall displays, t-shirts, etc.; the researcher

sent an email to ms. Cajucom to have another insight in being a Graphic Designer who sells

products that she applied her work to. After a few days, the researcher received all responses,

since then she deciphered which are for qualitative data and which are quantitative data. The

quantitative data was then turned to graphs, charts, and tables for better visual understanding. All

the answers received from both Primary and Secondary questions are made into summaries by

paragraphs.

24
Angkiko, Aira Dianne S.

Conclusion

The researcher therefore concludes that pursuing her dream career as a Graphic Designer

is a good path to take. According to the answers of both the respondents and internet-based,

Graphic Designers are well-recognized by the society.

The gathered data shows the opportunities possible for the researcher, that there are a lot

of courses that the researcher can decide to take to lead her into having a degree of Graphic

Design, in different impressive universities that offers the courses. The challenges possible are

stated which then is followed by several important attitudes that a Graphic Designer should

possess to be able to grasp the chances of being hired by companies who seem to hire fresh

graduates fast. The different developments of a Graphic Designer are shown as well as the

factors one should possess in order to progress - the progress of the positions as time or as the

performance of the employee improves; the stages from being a junior under employee to a

senior art manager handling a team of designers.

There are a handful of opportunities abroad that are up for grabs for the researcher

someday as long as she keeps up and matches the criteria needed for the job. The salary indicated

also shows that the researcher will be able to have a stable life if by chance the researcher will

support herself or live by her own means.
