Influences of Globalization To The Dressing Style
Introduction(ALBANIA)
(1)
For centuries, textiles and clothing styles have been one of the most obvious and poignant indicators
of cross-cultural interchange. With the rapid rise of globalization over the past several decades, the
spread of fashion across global cultures has mirrored the changes in economy, culture, and daily life
that globalization has brought. By studying the history and current trends in the fashion business, we
not only address a fascinating and exciting field, but we can gain a better understanding of the
complicated linkages that connect cultures and people in the modern world.
As countries and cultures seek to define their cultural identity within the globalized context of the
information age, fashion weeks are being born around the globe. It have played a role in reclaiming
cultural identity through personal style.
Philippines is not new to changes. We, Filipinos are always aware of what is happening in our
environment. Even if we are considered as just a developing country, we are always on the go for
different trends.
(2)
That’s why, our group wanted to know how freshman PUPians are being influenced by the rapid
changes brought by globalization when it comes to their fashion styles or how it affects the way they
dress and we’ve came up with the problem regarding the INFLUENCES of GLOBALIZATION to the
DRESSING STYLE PREFERENCES of 1ST YEAR STUDENTS of PUP STA. MESAA

The Polythecnic University of the Philippines is the home of almost 80,000 students from all of
its branches around the Philippines. 30,000 of those are in the main campus and as we go into the
university, we watch thousands of students. It is always like a large fashion week with pool of
different fashion styles we don’t know how they can pull off.
Our target respondents revolve around the PUP freshmen in the main campus only constituting
20 respondents.we, as researchers, wanted to know what changes in their style preferences for the
last 4 months. The questions fall under ThESE main topics.
1. As a PUP freshman, does being a college student changed the way you dress up? If yes, what
are the changes you’ve experienced?

ARGUMENT 1(ALYSSA)
One main impact of globalization is to keep the people informed and updated on each and every
new trend in the fashion industry through old and new media like radio, television, newspapers,
internet, mobile phones etc.
****Globalization reduced the transportation and communication costs and thereby increasing the
accessibility of people to new fashions all over the world. This has also increased the speed of
production in fashion compared to the olden days. The modern communication tools like internet
forums have enabled the development and spreading of new technological innovations, which has
increased the effectiveness of production in all nations. Globalization has thus resulted in more
exchange of ideas and information.

ARGUMENT 2(TINAY)
Due to change in environment - school and policies, peers, and culture- students were able to
express themselves through fashion.
When in Manila, life goes by swiftly. One day, you just graduated from grade school or
elementary school; and the next day, you’re on your way to university! Should I wear heels? Which
trend am I going to sport on the first day? What outfit should I wear to impress my professors and/or
soon-to-be classmates with?
These are questions that we usually ask ourselves before the term or school year starts,
especially if it is our first day as a college or university student. Some people plan out their outfits a
week – or even weeks – ahead!
17 out of the 20 interviewees proved these statement. They claimed that when they were in
high school, they have uniforms that’s why they can only dress up when there were events in the
campus. Some said that they are just pairing up tshirts and pants, never minding accessories or not
being conscious of what they are going to wear.
On the other hand, 3 of the respondents said that they are normally conscious of their fashion or
dressing styles.
(6)
ARGUMENT 3(TROPICALES)
The PUPians’ dress preferences are still based on Filipino style of clothing from the past but
with a little bit influence of foreign styles.
We believed that croptops and hanging blouses were originally from foreign countries and that
we, Filipinos just copy those styles. What we don’t know is this. There is so much wisdom in the past
that we take for granted.
The penchant of our tambays to raise their shirts and expose their stomach makes sense when
you see renderings of male dress in the pre-colonial period. One fashion guru said,
“The jackets were all bitin and made for hot climate. But with the imposition of the Western clothes
that were not necessarily concocted for the tropics, we’ve had to make certain adjustments that
would make them more comfortable on a subliminal level. So, kahit naka-polo shirt na, inaangat pa
rin para mapahanginan ang tiyan.”
”When it came to women's clothing, the history of our national dress became more apparent.
For women, we often believe that the Spanish friars imposed a new set of garments on the ‘naked’
inhabitants. But again, if you look at the terms that has existed prior to their arrival such as baru, saya,
tapis, you realize that all these garments had already existed albeit in a slightly different form. What
really happened was a reconfiguration and a layering of these articles of clothing after the Spaniards
established themselves on these islands and imposed their idea of morals and acceptable modes of
dress.
Respondent 5 and 13 said they use kpop as an inspiration, while respondent 1 said he idolizes
Justine Beiber. 3 respondents watch fashion weeks or next top model and they were inspired to
stylized and dress up. But despite of this, they still dresses according to Filipino norms. PUP doesn’t
have aircons for the students. We have to endure the heat and the sweat that’s running down our
faces. It is a normal sight and feeling for all of us. So, as PUPians, we have to adjust and wear
something comfortable enough to last our everyday classes. They idolized, but it doesn’t necessarily
mean that they are going to go for it.

ARGUMENT 4(ALYSSA)
The more time people spend on social networks, the more likely they are to shop at online
stores for clothing, music, luxury items and electronics.
Some common features of fashion social networks are the ability to organize looks by recent
posts, most viewed, highest ranked, etc. Most allow you to search for styles using tags like "black,"
"shirt," "sexy" and so on. All of them allow you to search out and make friends with other users,
becoming a "fan" or "follower" of someone else's fashion ideas. Many include wishlists for items that
members would love to have in their closet and even the ability to post styles on social bookmarking
sites Fashion social networks are Web sites where members post pictures of their latest looks, share
opinions on fashion trends, join virtual fashion groups and make friends with budding fashionistas
from around the world. Fashion social networks -can be standalone sites like Share Your Look or
StyleHive or exist as a niche within a larger social networking site like MySpace Fashion .
Fashion social networks are an online retailer's dream come true. According to Internet traffic
analysts at ComScore, the more time people spend on social networks, the more likely they are to
shop at online stores for clothing, music, luxury items and electronics. Of the 61.2 million people who
visited online retailers in August 2007, nearly 25 percent were labeled "heavy" social network users.

Here are the tabulations of the results we’ve gathered among our 20 respondents. All of them
experienced ordering online because I is easier to shop there and you have plenty of choices because
you can visit multiple shops with just internet and a few clicks. 10 prefer shopee, 6 prefer lazada and
the rest visit other online shops. One respondent mentioned “Boni Collection” which is an online
shop that is based internationally. This means that the goods in their shop comes from other
countries and are only shipped here in the Philippines.
All 20 also said that they are visiting places to look for clothes they wanted to wear. 18 prefer
ukay-ukay, 14 chose both ukay-ukay and sm, while 7 normally visits department stores and botiques.
When it comes to influencers, it centerd mostly to people. Now, those people use social media
to spread their fashion styles. According to the interview, instagram ranked 1 st, youtube and fcebook
as 2nd and pinterest as 3rd. Online platforms perform a great deal when it comes to fashion.
Their environment is al a factor together wit their friends. But what also influences them are the
vloggers, models and artists they are idolizing.
KPOP, JPOP, Western influences. Those take parts in the lives of 1 st year PUPians when it cmes to
their dressing style preferences. We see those styles as the basis of what’s good ad what’s not. We
take part in the spreading of those cultures. We, also, are a globalizing factor.
(9)
(10)(TROPICALES)
As a conclusion, we can say that PUPians are definitely influenced by Globalization and we are
not only influenced but we are also considered as influencers.
Globalization plays an important role to the society as of today. Not only it benefits us by connecting
each and every one but it also influences us. Through globalization, we can learn the cultures of
different countries and people by technology. Technology has been a major effect of globalization.
Most students have access to technology and this is what they always see, they always make sure to
be up to date, and up to the trend. Globalization has an effect in our culture, and as our society has
been being exposed to different cultures and lifestyles, people tend to adapt in their surroundings.
Such as how students depend their clothing preferences on what's in the trend, mostly with the
influences from the other parts of the globe. This means that culture, practices and traditions are also
susceptible to influence.
