Definition of Work Study:

“Work study is a generic term for those techniques, particularly method study and work measurement, which are used
in all its context and which lead systematically to the investigation of all the factors, which effect the efficiency and
economy of the situation being reviewed in order to effect improvement.”
The main objective of work study is to improve productivity of men, machines and materials. The aim of work study is to
determine the best method of performing each operation and to eliminate wastage so that production increases with less fatigue.
The work study is also used in determining the standard time that a qualified worker should take to perform the operation when
working at a normal place.

Work study is a technique which deals with the following problems:

(a) As to how should a job be done, and
(b) How much time a job should take for completion.
Answer for the first question is found by Motion Study or Method Study or Work Simplification. Answer for the second
question is found by the Time Study or Work Measurement.
Role of Work Study:
1. To standardise the method of doing a work,
2. To minimise the unit cost of production,
3. To determine the standard time for doing a task,
4. To minimise the material movement, and operators movement,
5. To eliminate unnecessary human movements,
6. To utilise facilities such as man, machine and materials most effectively, and
7. To a systematic investigation of all factors.

Objectives of Work Study:

 Increased efficiency, Better product quality,
 To choose the fastest method to do a job, To improve the working process,
 Less fatigue to operators and workers, Effective labour control,
 Effective utilisation of resources, To decide equipment requirements,
 To pay fair wages, To aid in calculating exact delivery,
 To formulate realistic labour budgeting, and To decide the required manpower to do a job.

Advantages of Work Study:

 Work study ensures higher productivity, Better working conditions with less fatigue,
 Higher wages to workers, Uniform production flow,
 Job satisfaction and job security to workers, Reduction in unit cost of production,
 Quality products to consumers, Fast delivery schedule,
 Harmonious employer-employee relation, Better service to customers.

Procedure/Steps involved in Work Study

 Select the job or process to be filled.
 Record from direct observation everything that happens in order to obtain data for analysis.
 Examine the recorded facts critically and challenge everything that is done, considering in turn:the purpose of
activity,the place where it is.
 Performed, the sequence in which the elements are performed, the person who is doing it,the means by which it is
done.
 Develop the most economic methods, taking into account all the circumstances.
 Measure the amount of work involved in the method used and calculate a “standard time” for doing it.
 Define the new method and the standard time
 Install the new method and time as agreed standard practices.
 Maintain the new standard practice by proper control procedures.
Method Study is the systematic recording, analysis, and critical examination of the methods and
movements involved in the performance of existing or proposed ways of doing work, as a means
of developing easier and more productive methods.

Method study is essentially concerned with finding better ways of doing things, and it contributes
to improved efficiency by getting rid of unnecessary work, avoidable delays and other forms of
waste. This is achieved through:

(a) Improved layout and design of factory, plant and work place.

(b) Improved working procedures.

(c) Improved use of material, plant and equipment and manpower.

(d) Improved working environment.

(e) Improved design or specification of the end product.

The techniques of method study aim at doing three things:

(i) To reveal and analyze the true facts concerning the situation

(ii) To examine those facts critically

(iii) To develop from the examination of the facts the best answer possible under the
circumstances.

The value of methods study is due to the flexibility with which the technique may be used in
different situations.
