ARDF-Reciever FOX-80/1

To HomePage

The aim was to develop a simple and robust antenna receiver for the 80m band, which can be
constructed in a relatively short time using simple, commercially available components. The
Fox 80 direct mixing receiver shown here, which is characterized by, among other things, a
very high degree of reliability, has emerged. In our OV V19, he was already set up eight times
and was ready for use immediately after the match. Unfortunately, we can not offer a kit, but
the circuit board or even completely finished devices (95 Euro) can be ordered. For finished
devices, the call is printed in the lower part of the front panel.
The receiver FOX 80 has a receiving range of 3,500 - 3,650 Mhz. This can be extended by
appropriate settings up to 3,720 Mhz, or one can selects the range from 3,600 to 3,800 Mhz if
the intention is to receive SSB. When ordering, a SMD version is supplied (Fox80 / 2)

The receiver outputs CW and SSB signals. The heart of the receiver is a TCA440. A fixed
inductance was used in the oscillator. This greatly facilitates reconstruction and adjustment.
The frequency stability is acceptable to the effort. Negative temperature changes have a
negative effect here.

Change still lies in areas that can be An LM386 is used as headphone amplifier. The gain is
more than adequate. The device is switched on by inserting the receiver into the jack socket,
a p-MOS transistor then switches through. In the blocked regime, only about 20 nA flow, so
actually nothing ...
In the picture below, you can see the opened RX with the printed circuit board, the battery
compartment at the bottom. At the top of the PVC tube is the ferrite antenna which is held
by an aluminum angle. This simultaneously represents the electrical antenna. The assembly
plan and the layout of the printed circuit board are shown below. The image files in original
size (10 x 5.3 cm) can be found in the rx.zip file. The layout is displayed correctly when
printing at 300 dpi.

Upon completion, the Fox 80 waits with an unexpectedly high sensitivity.

This can be down-regulated when approaching the "fox". The minimum in the bearing is
strongly pronounced. The forward / reverse ratio as well as the minimum bearing function
very reliably at a great distance, but also (which is very important) in the immediate close
range. Thus, the Fox 80/2 can be described as a high-performance fox hunting receiver. The
power is supplied by a 9V block battery. The headphones are connected with a 3.5 mm mono
jack plug. The impedance of the receiver should be in the range of 30 - 100 ohms.
The two coils of the antenna are not wound directly on the ferrite bar but on some layers of
paper. There should be a distance of about 5mm between the coils. 0.3mm Cu wire is suitable
as a wire. The zip-file contains all images in their original size. Also a component list and an
order list. The latter is designed for Reichelt electronics.
Afterwards, some adjustment notes follow:

• The frequency controller must be set to the left-hand stop, and the oscillator must be tuned
to 3.500 Mhz using trimmer CV2

• The frequency controller must now be set to the right, VR2 is now adjusted to 3,650 Mhz

• Use the VR1 control to set the maximum volume difference for forward / reverse.

• The CV1 controller adjusts the input circuit to the maximum volume. For this purpose, a
tool made of plastic or similar (HF tool) should be used.

The frequency is set with the help of a frequency counter or a TRX. This procedure is
repeated several times until the frequency range is set. If the maximum is pointing in the
wrong direction when pressing the button for connecting the electrical antenna, the
connections from the auxiliary winding L2 must be interchanged. In the event of feedback
signals when the button is pressed, the connections of the winding L1 must also be changed.
