1. Examine whether the following functions satisfy the Cauchy-Riemann equations, and determine regions if so.

2. Show that

5. Let f (z) = u + iv be analytic in a domain D. Prove that f is constant in D if any one of the followings hold.

(a) f 0 (z) vanishes in D.


(b) Re f (z) = u = constant.
(c) Im f (z) = v = constant.
(d) |f (z)| = constant (non zero).

6. Place the restrictions on the constants a, b, c so that the following functions are entire.
(a) x + ay − i(bx + cy); (b) ax2 − by 2 + icxy; (c) ex cos ay + iex sin(y + b) + c; (d) a(x2 + y 2 ) + ibxy + c.

7. Suppose f (z) = u + iv is analytic at z0 6= 0. Show that

and find their harmonic conjugates and the corresponding analytic functions f (z).

10. u(r, θ) = r2 cos 2θ is harmonic. Find its conjugate harmonic function and the corresponding analytic function

14. Let f (z) = u + iv and g(z) = v + iu be analytic functions for all z. Let f (0) = 1 and g(i) = i. Obtain the
value of h(z) = f 0 (z) + g 0 (z) + 2f (z)g(z) at z = 1 + i.

15. Show that v is harmonic conjugate of u if and only if −u is harmonic conjugate of v. (Hint: Compare f (z)
and −if (z)).

16. Express ln(e) in x + iy form.
