Harry Styles is nothing if not a talented showman, the kind who titles his first single since
2017 “Lights Up” and releases it on National Coming Out Day. Styles is no stranger to
statement lead singles: He introduced his debut album Harry Styles with “Sign of the Times,”
a nearly six-minute-long piece of feathery, melodramatic rock balladry. “Lights Up” is only a
little less over-the-top, featuring bright guitars and a blown-out bass line. With its winding,
psychedelic pre-chorus, the song seems designed to wriggle through the strictures of pop
songwriting. It is less than three minutes but its strangeness makes it feel longer.
“Lights Up” was released on Oct. 11, and the singer only began posting about the song’s
release 24 hours before premiering it on YouTube. As of last weekend, the music video had
over 12 million views and was the second most trending video.
The mood of the song matches the steamily lit video, and the interplay between light and dark
is a lyrical theme as well. “All the lights couldn’t put out the dark runnin’ through my heart,”
he sings in the chorus. In a recent Rolling Stone cover story, Styles said of his new album,
“It’s all about having sex and feeling sad.” “Lights Up” captures that vibe in a way that
makes it seem less contradictory and much less bleak, than that might sound.
October 11 was a day of LGBTQ visibility, and the timing of the new single’s release was not
a coincidence. This is when lines like “Lights up and they know who you are. Do you know
who you are?” start making sense. By contrast, the song’s video takes place mostly in the
dark, where a shirtless Harry is caressed by a throng of adoring men and women. And though
he is shied away from labeling his own sexuality, he often displays pride flags at his concerts.
According to Rolling Stone, Styles recorded sessions for his upcoming album at a Malibu
studio owned by Rick Rubin. On “Lights Up” he reunited with some of the writers and
producers who helped him to success the last time around. Kid Harpoon, best known for his
work with Florence and the Machine and the song he contributed to Harry Styles, cowrote the
song with Styles and Tyler Johnson, who also coproduced this track. Johnson last worked
with Styles as a cowriter and coproducer on the hit single “Sign of the Times.”
