CAUTION POSSIBLE HEATING ELEMENT DAMAGE
Silicon carbide heating elements are sensitive to
mechanical shock and have a relatively low
tensile strength. Elements should be handled
with care at all times to avoid breakage. Always
handle elements with one hand on each end.
!
CAUTION POSSIBLE HEATING ELEMENT DAMAGE
Heating elements are provided by LECO in
matched sets. Heating elements must be changed
in matched sets. Changing individual elements or
mixing old elements with new will significantly
reduce element life.
11. From the front of the furnace, curl one end of the braided
cable around the upper left heating element (figure 2-6,
page 2–29).
12. Using the clamp expansion tool, install a clamp onto the
heating element over the braided cable.
13. Curl the other end of the cable around the lower bottom
heating element and clamp it in place. The braided cable
must not be taut.
14. Repeat steps 11-13 for the right two heating elements.
15. From the back of the furnace, curl the free end of the left
braided cable, already connected to the instrument,
around the lower left heating element and clamp it in
place.
16. Curl the free end of the right braided cable, already
connected to the instrument, around the lower right
heating element and clamp it in place.
17. Curl one end of the remaining braided cable around the
upper left heating element and clamp it in place.
18. Curl the other end of the braided cable around the upper
right heating element and clamp it in place.
19. Set the lower front ceramic insulator into the slots
provided on the left and right of the furnace. Slide the
square down in place (figure 2-5, page 2–28).
20. Place the ceramic insulator with the notch on top of the
first square (figure 2-5, page 2–28).
21. Insert the back ceramic insulator through the slot in the
top of the instrument and into the slots provided on the
left and right sides of the furnace (figure 2-5, page 2–28).
• Be sure that the face of the front flange is flush with the
Note face of the inner combustion tube. If it is not, the
combustion tube will break when installed.
!

Add Standard
Any samples that are to be used for calibration must have a
defined standard for that sample type.
4. Click OK.

CAUTION OPERATOR INJURY HAZARD
Infrared light can be damaging to the eyes.
Do not look into the combustion chamber when
the door is open. Keep the analyzer door shut
until instructed to open it.
• Only the points that saturated the low sulfur cell are used
Note when calibrating the high sulfur cell.

Available Functions
@Name () Text Only
@Description() Text Only
@Method() Text Only
@Weight() Numeric Only
@Sulfur() Numeric Only
@Moisture() Numeric Only
When the function is a numeric field only, it will contain
numbers that can be plugged into the formulas. When using
any of these numeric functions, the Numeric field must be
activated. To activate, click in the check box in the Numeric
column. An X is displayed when activated.
Like the analysis data, the IR cell data can be viewed for a
single sample or for multiple samples.
The View Data option is available when viewing cell data for a
single sample. Clicking the View Data button displays a list of
voltages recorded by that cell and the intervals at which they
were recorded.
The Saturated box indicates if the cell was or was not saturated
during analysis. A check mark indicates that the cell was
saturated.

When the analyze flow passes through the IR cell, the response
of the cell is not linear. A programmed equation linearizes the
response, permitting a linear measure of milligrams of
sulfur/second. By measuring the signal over time, a curve with
an area representing the total sulfur present in a sample can be
displayed.
An integration of this area is performed to determine the sulfur
measured. Calibration compensates for differences between the
total sulfur measured and the actual sulfur concentration, as
discussed in Curves and Intercepts.
Intercepts
A fixed or regressed intercept can be used when calibrating the
instrument.
If a fixed intercept is chosen, the intercept must be entered. To
determine this value, perform three to five analyses using
empty boats (blank samples) then average the values. The
curves will start at the point on the Y-axis entered.
If the regressed intercept is used, enough blank samples should
be analyzed to allow a ratio of one blank for every three
standards chosen for calibration. If this ratio is maintained, the
computer calculates the intercept before graphing the chosen
standards.
