Lesson Plan #22

Lab 3
Pets

Date:  Monday, November 19, 2018

Supervisor:  Abbye
Lead Teacher: 2nd Team Plan

Children Receiving Specific Focus Today:
1. Lars see Gathering time
2. Mason see manipulatives
3. Carter see language: FIshing
4. Issola see dramatic play
5. Alma see language and literacy
6. Owen see dramatic play

Preassessment and Findings:
● Lindee asked Mason “how do we take care of pets?” he said “Give them love and a
bed”
● When a new pet was introduced to the class, Lars, Alma, Mason, and Leslie spent about
15 to 20 minutes just watching to see what the gecko would do.
● Paisley was asked what the gecko eats and she said “I don’t know… Rocks?” Lars also
said that he doesn’t know what the gecko eats.
● At the snack table one day, Abbye asked Ruby what the guinea pig eats. She said, “I
think probably graham crackers.” Alma, who was sitting next to her said “Yeah!” Abbye
asked the children at snack if they wanted to learn about the guinea pig. Alma, Ruby,
Ben, Seth, and Sally said yes.
● Throughout the semester our children have shown a large interest in animals. Ruby, Leslie,
and Paisley have shown a large interest in horses. Ruby and Whitney have also brought
their own dogs to class on several occasions. When ever we put stuffed animals out, the
children will pick them up and carry them around the room the majority of the day.
Mason always plays with the plastic snakes when they are out as well. Based on our
children’s interests and our preassessment, we have found that many of the children
have some misconceptions about what pets eat. They have also shown that dogs and
cats are the main pets that they know about. We will provide opportunities throughout
the day where the children will get to see what each animal eats and how they eat it.
They will also be able to learn more about the pets that we have at preschool.

Ideas to be Emphasized and Overall Developmental Focus:
1. Many different animals can be pets.
2. We have to give different animals different types of food to keep them healthy.
3. Today we will focus on fine motor skills.
