INTRODUCTION:
Global system for mobiles(GSM) is a second generation cellular standard developed by
European Telecommunication Standards Institute. It is developed to describe the protocols
for second generation cellular networks and in order to create a common European mobile
telephone standard but later it was accepted world - wide . (Huurdeman & Wiley, 2003)
Formerly it was”Groupe Speciale Mobile” founded in 1982 now it is Global System for
Mobile Communication.

SIM CARD:
 Sim card is used in the identification of mobile phone.
 It is the key feature of Global system for mobiles.
 It is used for authentication.

BTS:
It can handles the protocols with the mobile.

BSC:
BSC is usd to manages the resources(channel, setup, handover) for one or more BTS’s.

MSC:
 MSC stands for MOBILE SWITCHING CENTER.
 It is the central component of the network.
 MSC can handles many cell phone at a time.
HLR:
 It is the database of all users and current location.
 It is one per network.

VLR:
 It is the database of all user and romers in some geographical areas.
 It caches the HLR.

EIR:
It is the database of all valid equipment.

AUC:
Database of users secret key.

BENEFITS OF GSM:
 GSM provide cost effective solutions and products.
 Advanced versions of GSM provide will provide high speed download and upload of data.
 Due to availability of large number of network engineers at affordable cost GSM is easy to
maintain.
 The GSM signal not deteriorate inside the office premises and home.
 GSM can be integrated easily with other wireless technology based devices.
 Mobile phones works based on Sim cards so it is easy to change variety of mobiles phone by
user.
 SAIC(Single Antenna Interface Cancellation) and DIAC(Dual Antenna Interface Cancellation)
provide very high transmission quality.
 Networks that are based on GSM
