VOLCANO HAZARDS

Different types of Volcano Hazards

Pyroclastic Density Currents(Pyroclastic Flows And Surges)

 A fast moving current of hot gas

and volcanic matter.

Lahar

 A violent type of mudflow or

debris flow composed of pyroclastic
material, rocky debris and water.
Structural Collapse: Debris Flow-Avalanches

 Develops from the collapse of

parts of volcano.

Dome Collapse and the Formation of Pyroclastic Flows and

Surges
 “ Boiling Over” from eruptive vent:
during on explosive eruption,
material, is erupted without forming
a high plume and rapidly moves
down slope.
Lava Flows

 Are streams of molten rock that

pour an erupting vent.

Tephra Fall and Ballistic Projectiles

 Refers to volcanic rock and lava
materials that are ejected into the
air by explosions or carried upward
by the eruption column’s hot gases
or lava fountains.
Volcanic Gas

 Are gases given off by active

volcanoes.

Tsunamis

 Powerful waves, most often

caused by volcanic eruptions or
beneath the ocean floor.

Volcanic Lightning
 Is an electrical discharge caused
by a volcanic eruption.

Sign of Volcanic Eruption

 Having a very small earthquakes beneath the volcano.
 Slight inflation, or swelling, of the volcano.
 Increased emission of heat and gas from vents on the
volcano.
Volcano Hazard Maps

 Typically, number of types of hazards will result from a

volcanic eruption.
Precautionary and Safety Measures for Volcanic Eruption

 Evacuate only as recommended by authorities to stay clear

of lava, mudflows, flying rocks and debris.
 Before you leave the house, change into long-sleeved shirts
and long pants and use goggles or eyeglasses.
 Wear an emergency mask or hold a damp cloth over your
face.
 Know your evacuation route. Keep gas in your car.
 Always prepare the first aid kit.
